Abstract The development of our understanding of the quantum states of nuclei is viewed from a historical perspective. The characteristics of nuclear energy levels are presented, and interpretations of these excitations in terms of simple vibrational and rotational modes are presented. The application of energy level schemes in a variety of fields is briefly summarized.
