Notes: The TGV32, a 32-channel preamplifier–multiplicity discriminator chip for the multiplicity vertex detector (MVD) at PHENIX, is a unique silicon preamplifier in that it provides both an analog output for storage in an analog memory and a weighted summed-current output for conversion to a channel multiplicity count. The architecture and test results of the chip are presented. Details about the design of the preamplifier, discriminator, and programmable digital–analog converters performance as well as the process variations are presented. The chip is fabricated in a 1.2 μm, n-well, complementary metal–oxide–semiconductor process. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Background: The dramatic inhibitory effect of proton pump inhibitors on acid secretion has raised concern about possible side-effects, such as small bowel bacterial overgrowth, which may result in further gut dysfunction. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of proton pump inhibitors on duodenal bacteriology, carbohydrate absorption and bowel habit. Methods: Small bowel bacterial overgrowth and xylose absorption were measured by culture of aspirated duodenal fluid and a combined 1 g 14C-d-xylose absorption–metabolism test in 20 patients with peptic ulcer disease. Tests were repeated after 4 weeks of treatment with omeprazole 20 mg daily. Intestinal transit was assessed by recording interdefecatory intervals and stool form. Results: All patients showed an increase in duodenal bacterial counts following treatment, geometric mean counts increasing from 330 to 95000 CFU/mL. The geometric mean of the difference was 290 CFU/mL (95% CI, 110–720 CFU/mL; P〈0.0001). No changes were noted in the xylose absorption or metabolism tests. Mean interdefecatory intervals decreased by 32% from 31.7 to 21.6 h, the mean difference being 10.1 h (95% CI, 1.6–18.5 h; P=0.01). The mean stool form index increased from 2.95 to 4.70, mean difference 1.75 (95% CI, 1.10–2.40; P〈0.0001), with four patients reporting diarrhoea. Conclusion: The results indicate that conventional treatment for duodenal ulcers with a proton pump inhibitor significantly increases bacterial colonization of the duodenum and the speed of intestinal transit.

Notes: An intersexual adult New Zealand longfinned eel Anguilla dieffenbachii, displaying testicular tissue within its ovaries, is described. Gonad samples were collected at 0, 21, 42 (by biopsy) and 54 days (autopsy) after the start of an experiment that aimed to induce ovarian maturation by repeated treatment with 5 mg kg−1 salmon pituitary homogenate (SPH). Very small patches of testicular tissue (almost always single seminiferous tubules), not visible macroscopically, were observed on all sampling dates. Treatment with SPH resulted in advanced stages of spermatogenesis in these seminiferous tubules, synchronous with the development of oocytes, which reached the migratory nucleus stage after 53 days. This finding is discussed in relation to current knowledge on sexual development in anguillid eels.

Notes: Abstract  Changes in serum biochemical and hematological parameters were studied in 20 male rhesus monkeys following acute poisoning by the organophosphate nerve agent cyclohexylmethylphosphonofluoridate (CMPF or GF). Animals were challenged with 5×LD50 GF (233 μg/kg, IM) following pretreatment with pyridostigmine (0.3–0.7 mg/kg per 24 h) and treated with atropine (0.4 mg/kg, IM) and either 2-PAM (25.7 mg/kg, IM) or HI6 (37.8 mg/kg, IM) at the onset of clinical signs or at 1 min after exposure. Muscle fasciculations, tremors, or convulsions occurred in 19 of 20 animals. Serum biochemical and hematologic parameters were analyzed 2 days and 7 days after exposure and compared to pre-exposure baseline values. Significant increases in creatine kinase (CK), lactate dehydrogenase (LD), aspartate transaminase (AST), alanine transaminase (ALT) and potassium ion (K+), associated with damage to striated muscle and metabolic acidosis, occurred in both oxime-treated groups 2 days after exposure. Total protein, albumin, red blood cell (RBC) count, hemoglobin concentration (Hb) and hematocrit (Hct), were decreased in both oxime-treated groups at 7 days. The results demonstrate that animals exposed to a single high dose of GF and treated with standard therapy exhibit changes in serum biochemical and hematological indices directly and indirectly associated with their clinical presentations.

Notes: Abstract. We consider the problem of minimizing mean flow time for the Imprecise Computation Model introduced by Lin et al. A task system TS=({T i },{r(T i )},{d(T i )},{m(T i )},{o(T i )}) consists of a set of n independent tasks, where r(T i ),d(T i ),m(T i ) , and o(T i ) denote the ready time, deadline, execution time of the mandatory part, and execution time of the optional part of T i , respectively. Given a task system TS and an error threshold K , our goal is to find a preemptive schedule on one processor such that the average error is no more than K and the mean flow time of the schedule is minimized. Such a schedule is called an optimal schedule. In this article we show that the problem of finding an optimal schedule is NP-hard, even if all tasks have identical ready times and deadlines. A pseudopolynomial-time algorithm is given for a set of tasks with identical ready times and deadlines, and oppositely ordered mandatory execution times and total execution times (i.e., there is a labeling of tasks such that m(T i )≤ m(T i+1 ) and m(T i )+o(T i )≥ m(T i+1 )+o(T i+1 ) for each 1≤ i〈n ). Finally, polynomial-time algorithms are given for (1) a set of tasks with identical ready times, and similarly ordered mandatory execution times and total execution times and (2) a set of tasks with similarly ordered ready times, deadlines, mandatory execution times, and total execution times.

Notes: Abstract  Fechtner syndrome, a disease in the spectrum of the hereditary nephridites, is a macrothrombocytopenia associated with sensorineural hearing loss, cataracts, nephritis, and characteristic leukocyte inclusions. Renal biopsy findings are consistent with those of Alport syndrome, and the associated renal disease is said to be unusual before mid to late adulthood. Here, we review the available literature on this disease and report two African-American pediatric patients with Fechtner syndrome who rapidly progressed to end-stage renal disease during adolescence. We conclude that chronic renal failure can occur at a young age in patients with Fechtner syndrome, with a possible relation to race/ethnicity. Fechtner syndrome, or other variants of Alport syndrome, need to be considered in patients presenting with proteinuria and thrombocytopenia.

Notes: Abstract  Genome-analysis tools are useful for dissecting complex phenotypes and manipulating determinants of these phenotypes in breeding programs. Quantitative trait locus (QTL)-analysis tools were used to map QTLs conferring adult plant resistance to stripe rust (caused by Puccinia striiformis f.sp. hordei) in barley. The resistance QTLs were introgressed into a genetic background unrelated to the mapping population with one cycle of marker-assisted backcrossing. Doubled-haploid lines were derived from selected backcross lines, phenotyped for stripe-rust resistance, and genotyped with an array of molecular markers. The resistance QTLs that were introgressed were significant determinants of resistance in the new genetic background. Additional resistance QTLs were also detected. The susceptible parent contributed resistance alleles at two of these new QTLs. We hypothesize that favorable alleles were fixed at these new QTLs in the original mapping population. Genetic background may, therefore, have an important role in QTL-transfer experiments. A breeding system is described that integrates single-copy and multiplex markers with confirmation of the target phenotype in doubled-haploid lines phenotyped in field tests. This approach may be useful for simultaneously producing agronomically useful germplasm and contributing to an understanding of quantitatively inherited traits.
