Notes: One of the problems encountered in the application of reflectometry to fusion plasmas is that the transmit antenna must be aligned such that the reflected wave form is successfully collected by a suitably arranged receive antenna. This task is made even more difficult in the case of shaped plasmas, or when plasma motion is such that the incident wave is no longer normal to the plasma surface. One would ideally like to have antennas which may be steered in real time to compensate for changes in plasma shape and/or position. A program has been initiated at U.C. Davis to address this problem, and microwave beam steerers suitable for electronically scanned reflectometers have been developed. The approach taken has been to develop phased antenna array (PAA) concepts which operate over broad bandwidths. Laboratory test results of a proof-of-principle PAA system will be presented, along with a description of ongoing research activities by U.C. Davis in this field. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Labonuory bioassay and field experiments were conducted to characterize the dose response of weeds to methyl iodide and methyl bromide as soil fumigants. The patterns in potency of both fumigants and in sensitivity of diffcretit weed species to the fumigants were distinguished with the use of logistic dose-response models. Similar to its response to methyl hromide fumigation. Amaranthus retrofleus L. was the most sensitive to methyl iodide fumigation. Cyperus rotundtis L. was the least sensitive to methyl iodide fumigation, whereas Portuloca oleracea L. was the least sensitive to methyl hromide. Lolium multiflorum Lam. Abutilon theophrasti Medik.Chenopodium album L. P. ateracea. Brassica kaber (D.C.) L.C. Wheeler and Cyperus escuden-tus L. were similar in sensitivity to methyl iodide. Methyl iodide was as potent as methyl bromide for A. retroflexus but more potent than methyl bromide for L. multiflorum, A. theophrasti. C. album. P. oleracea. B. kaber, C. esculentus and C. rotundus. The dose response for weeds in the field was similar to that obtained in laboratory bioassays. Under fieid conditions. 280 kg ha-1 methyl iodide killed all species tested except Solanum nigrum L Methyl iodide appears to be a suitable replacement for meihyl bromide because it can be used in situations simitar to methyl bromide fumigation, has superior efficacy against a broad spectrum of pests and has a low potential for degrading the earth's ozone lavers.

Notes: Time-of-flight radar diagnostics are envisaged as having great potential for determining electron density profiles in next generation tokamaks such as TPX and ITER. Ultrashort-pulse radar reflectometry is a promising new time-of-flight diagnostic capable of making instantaneous density profile determination utilizing a single source and a single set of measurements. A proof-of-principle eight channel system has been constructed for use on the CCT tokamak at UCLA, and has undergone extensive testing in the laboratory. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: High speed, high on-off contrast ratio switches utilizing beam control grid array technology are under development for use in moderate pulse reflectometry. This approach, which utilizes arrays consisting of hundreds of Shottky varactor diodes embedded within an overmoded wave guide, is expected to generate switching times in the 100–500 ps range with high power handling capabilities. The switches are designed for initial wideband operation in V band (50–75 GHz) operation although they can be operated both at lower and higher frequencies, and are intended for use in a moderate pulse reflectometry system such as used on the RTP tokamak. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Monolithic nonlinear transmission lines can be employed as ultrashort pulse (1–5 ps rise/fall time) generators to extend ultrashort pulse reflectometry (USPR) to high field tokamaks such as TFTR, Alcator C-MOD, and ITER. Multiple barrier varactor devices have been successfully employed as high power and high speed devices in this application. Monolithic NLTLs can also be employed to simplify moderate pulse reflectometry systems, in which NLTLs may be employed as broadband frequency multipliers. Theoretical and experimental investigations will be presented.© 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Wide bandwidth, low cost, 20 channel monolithic, and hybrid Schottky diode mixer arrays are under development for electron cyclotron emission (ECE) diagnostics on TEXT-U. These arrays, designed to measure 2nd harmonic ECE emission between 90 and 140 GHz, will be used to form two-dimensional temperature profiles and two-dimensional images of thermal fluctuations. Fabrication and test results are presented, together with details regarding the actual implementation on TEXT-U. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract Fractures of the patella are relatively rare injuries for children. Fourteen patients with patellar fractures were reviewed. There were 12 boys and two girls with the age ranging between 9 and 15 years and an average of 11.4 years. Sleeve fractures were the most common type of patellar fractures observed (eight cases), followed by transverse fractures (four cases) and comminuted fractures (two cases). All the fractures were treated with open reduction and followed up for 2 to 20 years. Overall results were good in 13 patients, and flexion limitation of the knee was seen in one. Fractures of the patella in children are characterised by sleeve fractures. The prognosis of the patients treated with open reduction is generally good.
