Notes: Abstract Pregnant mice were injected intraperitoneally with cytosine arabinoside (Ara-C) on days 13.5 and 14.5 of pregnancy. The brains of their offspring were studied histologically and histochemically. In addition to dysgenic microcephaly, nodular structures consisting of cells with a relatively homogeneous morphology were observed in the depths of the cerebral cortex. The cell clusters were first seen around postnatal day 4, and had a cellular continuity with the disarrayed pyramidal cell layer in the CA1 region of the hippocampus. Golgi-Cox staining showed a number of pyramidal-shaped cells in the clusters. Morphologically, they resembled the pyramidal neurons of the hippocampus. Immunohistochemical examination, using anti-serotonin or anti-tyrosine hydroxylase antibodies, also indicated similarities between the cell clusters and the pyramidal cell layer. It is, therefore, proposed that the cell clusters consisted of heterotopic pyramidal cells of the hippocampus. A few synaptic structures could already be detected in the heterotopic cell clusters on postnatal day 3 by electron microscopy. This early establishment of synaptic contact with related neurons may have caused the heterotopic localization of the pyramidal cells.

Notes: Abstract Determination of low molecular weight carbohydrates in marine environments indicated that 1-O-β-D-galactosylglycerol, 6-O-α-D-galactosyl-1-O-β-D-galacto-sylglycerol, sucrose, laminaribiose and laminaritriose are widely distributed in seawaters, suspended and sinking particles, and sediments in coastal as well as in deep-sea waters [e.g. Mikawa Bay and Sagami Bay, Kumano Nada (offshore Japan), and northwest North Pacific Ocean, Bering Sea and Antarctic Ocean: collections during 1978–1984]. Identification of these glycosylglycerols and oligosaccharides in algal cells such as a flagellate (Olisthodisus luteus), blue-green algae (e.g.Trichodesmium sp.) and a diatom (Reptocylindrus denicus) strongly suggests that these sugars are photosynthetically produced by algae in the euphotic zone and are then rapidly transported to the deep sea as sinking particles which can be collected by sediment-trap experiments. The rapid decay rate of low molecular weight carbohydrates by microorganisms suggests that the transported sugars provide energy substrates for microorganisms living in the deep sea.

Notes: Abstract— —An enzyme catalysing the transfer of sulphate from 3′-phosphoadenylsulphate to serotonin was purified from rabbit brain. The purification procedure involved ammonium sulphate fractionation of the 200,000 g supernatant of rabbit brain homogenate, treatment with alumina Cγ, and chromatography on DEAE-cellulose. The enzyme was purified 67-fold from the 200,000 g supernatant of the brain homogenate. The intracranial distribution of the sulphotransferase was investigated and the cerebellum found to have rather high activity. The sulphotransferase activities of rabbit, dog, rat and bovine brains were compared; rabbit brain had the highest activity, followed by dog, rat and bovine brain.

Notes: Regional variation in the P–T path of the Sambagawa metamorphic rocks, central Shikoku, Japan has been inferred from compositional zoning of metamorphic amphibole. Rocks constituting the northern part (Saruta River area) exhibit a hairpin type P–T path, where winchite/actinolite grew at the prograde stage, the peak metamorphism was recorded by the growth of barroisite to hornblende and sodic amphibole to winchite/actinolite grew at the retrograde stage. In the southern part (Asemi River area), rocks exhibit a clockwise type P–T path, where barroisite to hornblende core is rimmed by winchite to actinolite. The difference in P–T path could suggest a faster exhumation rate (i.e. more rapid decompression) in the southern than in the northern part. On the other hand, physical conditions of deformation during the exhumation stage have been independently inferred from microstructures in deformed quartz. Recrystallized quartz grains in rocks from the low-grade (chlorite and garnet) zones are much more stretched in the southern part (aspect ratio ≥ 4.0) than in the northern part (aspect ratio〈 4.0), indicating a higher strain rate in the former than in the latter. These facts may indicate that the exhumation and strain rates are correlated (i.e. the exhumation rate increases with increasing the strain rate). The difference in the exhumation rate inferred from amphibole zoning between the northern and southern parts could be explained by an extensional model involving normal faulting, where the lower plate can be exhumed faster than the upper plate due to the displacement along the fault. Furthermore, the model may explain the positive correlation between the exhumation and strain rates, because the lower plate tended to support more stress than the upper plate.

Notes: A polarizing undulator has been constructed utilizing crossed and retarded magnetic fields that can provide arbitrary polarized radiation. The absolute brightness and polarization characteristics have been studied in the visible region from 350–700 nm at 230 MeV of stored electron energy by varying the observation angle θ. Any desired elliptically polarized radiation was obtainable by adjusting the retardation between the two pairs of magnet arrays.

Notes: A simple and flexible method is presented for generating a partially coherent light which obtains the highly smooth focused beam pattern. The beam divergence of 32 times diffraction limited light having a spectral width of 1.6 nm has been easily and reproducibly achieved by injecting a laser pulse from an actively mode-locked Nd:YLF oscillator to a single mode optical fiber, coupled to a multimode optical fiber. Temporal evolution of the beam smoothing due to the induced incoherency was examined with temporally resolved measurements of the beam pattern. The partially coherent light was focused through a random phase plate after the amplification. Small-scale intensity perturbation in a focused beam pattern was greatly reduced.

Notes: Aim: To investigate the EP receptor subtype involved in the gastroprotective action of prostaglandin (PG) E2 using various EP receptor agonists in rats, and using knockout mice lacking EP1 or EP3 receptors. Methods: Male SD rats and C57BL/6 mice were used after an 18-h fast. Gastric lesions were induced by oral administration of HCl/ethanol (150 m m HCl in 60% ethanol). Rats were given various EP agonists i.v. 10 min before HCl/ethanol: PGE2, sulprostone (EP1/EP3 agonist), butaprost (EP2 agonist), 17-phenyl-ω-trinorPGE2 (17-phenylPGE2: EP1 agonist), ONO-NT012 (EP3 agonist) and 11-deoxyPGE1 (EP3/EP4 agonist). In a separate study, the effect of PGE2 on HCl/ethanol lesions was examined in EP1- and EP3-receptor knockout mice. Results: Gastric lesions induced by HCl/ethanol were dose dependently prevented by PGE2; this effect was mimicked by sulprostone and 17-phenylPGE2 and was significantly antagonized by ONO-AE-829, an EP1 antagonist. Neither butaprost, ONO-NT012 nor 11-deoxyPGE1 exhibited any protective activity against HCl/ethanol-induced gastric lesions. PGE2 caused an inhibition of gastric motility as well as an increase of mucosal blood flow and mucus secretion, the effects being mimicked by prostanoids activating EP1 receptors, EP2/EP3/EP4 receptors and EP4 receptors, respectively. On the other hand, although HCl/ethanol caused similar damage in both wild-type mice and knockout mice lacking EP1 or EP3 receptors, the cytoprotective action of PGE2 observed in wild-type and EP3-receptor knockout mice totally disappeared in mice lacking EP1 receptors. Conclusion: The gastric cytoprotective action of PGE2 is mediated by activation of EP1 receptors. This effect may be functionally associated with inhibition of gastric motility but not with increased mucosal blood flow or mucus secretion.

Notes: We examined the role of N-methyl-d-aspartate (NMDA) receptors in the control of noradrenaline release in the supraoptic nucleus (SON) using a microdialysis method in urethane-anaesthetized rats. Local application of 0.5 mm NMDA into the SON by retrodialysis decreased noradrenaline content in the dialysate from the SON. On the other hand, MK-801, a channel blocker of NMDA receptors, or D(–)2-amino-5-phosphonopentanoic acid (AP-5), a competitive NMDA receptor antagonist, increased the basal noradrenaline content. Tetrodotoxin did not completely block the noradrenaline increase after NMDA antagonists. Infusion of Ca2+-free solution containing Ni2+ and Cd2+, or a mixture of ω-agatoxin IVA and ω-conotoxin GVIA, voltage-sensitive Ca2+ channels blockers, did not block noradrenaline increase after AP-5, but blocked noradrenaline increase after high K+. Infusion of intracellular Ca2+ blockers, thapsigargin or TMB-8, impaired noradrenaline increase after AP-5 but not that after high K+. These data are consistent with the hypothesis that activation of an NMDA receptor inhibits an intracellular Ca2+ store-dependent noradrenaline release from nerve terminals in the SON.

Notes: The present study aimed to examine roles of N-methyl-D-aspartic acid (NMDA) receptors in oxytocin and vasopressin release after osmotic stimuli. A noncompetitive NMDA receptor antagonist, MK-801 (0.2 mg/kg body weight, i.p.), significantly decreased plasma concentrations of oxytocin and vasopressin after hypertonic saline injection (0.3 or 0.6 M NaCl, i.p., 20 ml/kg). By contrast, oxytocin release induced by injection of cholecystokinin octapeptide (20 µg/kg, i.p.) was not significantly changed by MK-801. Hypertonic saline injection increased the number of cells expressing Fos in the supraoptic nucleus and in the regions anterior and ventral to the third ventricle (AV3V) regions [the organum vasculosum of the lamina terminalis (OVLT) and median preoptic nucleus]. MK-801 decreased the number of cells expressing protein in these areas after hypertonic saline injection. A microdialysis method showed that a hypertonic saline injection (0.6 M NaCl, 20 ml/kg, i.p.) facilitated glutamic acid release in and near the OVLT. The results support the view that NMDA receptor in the AV3V region modulates in a facilitative fashion the AV3V inputs to the supraoptic neurosecretory neurones.
