    Notizen: We propose a method to reduce the bandpass of soft x-ray multilayer Bragg reflectors. It consists in etching down to the substrate a multilayer mirror having a large number of bilayers in order to get a lamellar grating with a multilayer bar width representing only 10%–30% of the grating period. The grating is used at the zeroth diffraction order. Once designed, this monochromator was tested with the Lα,β spectra of iron and copper. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: B4C/W multilayer mirrors designed for an x-ray beamline at the MEGAJOULE facility are susceptible to x-ray damage. The OCTAL laser was implemented to generate a gold plasma with a continuous x-ray spectrum (0.1 to 1.5 keV) used to irradiate the mirror. The fluence on the sample is 0.05 J/cm2 per shot. The pulse duration is about 1 ns. The temporally integrated spectrum reflected by the mirror is analyzed by a bent crystal spectrometer and recorded on photographic film. The spectral analysis suggests that an increase of the mean period of the multilayer happens during the second shot. This expansion is estimated to be 5% with respect to the unexposed mirror. After the second shot, destruction of the multilayer coating in the central part of the sample and irreversible damages in the other part characterized by a decrease of Bragg reflectivity have been observed. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: We describe an instrument designed for studying the electronic structure of bulk, surface, and deep solid–solid interface. The analysis is made by soft-x-ray emission spectroscopy induced by electron bombardment. The target is placed under ultrahigh vacuum and can be prepared and treated in situ. High resolution is achieved both as concerns the photon energy and the electron-beam energy. Tests have been made in the dispersive mode and in the characteristic isochromat mode. In both cases experimental resolution is in good agreement with the expected one.

    Notizen: New x-ray optics based on multidimensional diffraction are now available and have specific properties and potentials. Some characteristics of multilayer laminar amplitude gratings are presented in this work and exemplified with Mo/C multilayer etched gratings (1000 lines/mm) and (4166 lines/mm) for use in the 250 eV region and the 1 keV, respectively. The fabrication, tests of the gratings, and modeling of their diffractive performances are reported. Possible applications are discussed.

    Notizen: Ab initio coupled and uncoupled Hartree–Fock polarizabilities are computed for increasingly large oligothiophenes using the 3–21G, 6–31G**, 6–311G**, and the Sadlej medium-size polarized atomic basis sets. The comparison with experimental values highlights the large sensitivity of the measured polarizabilities with respect to working conditions. By extrapolating to the infinite chain limit the polarizability values of increasingly large oligomers, we compute the asymptotic polarizabilities per thiophene ring. The transversal, perpendicular, and longitudinal asymptotic coupled Hartree–Fock polarizabilities per thiophene ring are, using the 3–21G (6–31G**) atomic basis set, 49.7 (52.5), 15.2 (20.6), and 184.1 (190.0) a.u., respectively. Polythiophene is more polarizable than polydiacetylene, polyyne, and polysilane but less polarizable than polyacetylene which, in contrast to polythiophene, is much more difficult to process. Using a procedure which relates the polarizability and the topology of the one-particle states, the major contribution to the polarizability is attributed to π-symmetry crystalline orbitals located at the top of the valence bands, which look like an alternation of segments of the highest occupied crystalline orbitals of the all-trans and trans-cisoïd polyacetylene. However, a sizeable σ contribution comes from σ-conjugated segments formed by the sulfur atoms and their two adjacent carbon atoms.

    Notizen: In their recent work, Delueze and Pickup stated that in the random phase approximation (RPA) approach developed by Champagne et al. for evaluating the static and dynamic longitudinal polarizabilities per unit cell of stereoregular polymers (i) singularities due to the long-range character of the Coulomb forces were not completely addressed; and (ii) this deficiency might be possibly at the origin of some obvious discrepancies, of the order of several atomic units, between molecular and polymer calculations of polarizabilities per monomeric unit. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: Abstract This study compared the personality self-representations of 288 hand injured patients with those of 959 young people (15–25 years old) randomly selected from the general population (noted GP), and with those of 336 unemployed people of all ages in professional training (U) in Lorraine (north-eastern France). The relationship between patients' personality self-representations and injury was also investigated. Personality self-representations included 14 questions: in your own opinion are you sociable?, at ease with others?, serious?, careful?, dynamic?, optimistic?, worried?, irritable?, clumsy?, solitary?, organised?, ambitious?, do you have a sense of responsibility?, and many plans? The patients had similar self-representations to GP except for the items non clumsy (odds ratio adjusted on age and sex OR=2.40,p〈0.05) and optimistic (OR=1.70, but 0.05〈p〈0.10). The frequencies of non irritable, non clumsy and non solitary people were higher in patients than in the U group (OR about 2.40,p〈0.01). By contrast, the other items were more favourable for the U group except for the items sociable, organised and having many plans. Self-representation items were significantly related to some socio-demographic data. The work injured workmen having one or more previous work injuries during the last five years were more at ease with others than the other subjects. Among the work injured workmen who had had no previous work injury during this time, the people aged 29 or less (the highest risk age class) were more optimistic than the others (71% vs 49%,p〈0.05); a difference was also found for the items at ease with others, careful, dynamic, and non worried, but it was not significant possibly due to the small number of subjects. The sum of these five items differed between the two age groups (3.29±1.49 vs 2.55±1.68,p〈0.05). These simple items would provide an interesting approach in terms of personality which could explain in part the excess of work injuries in young people, though the work requirement still seemed to be the highest risk factor.

    Notizen: An alternative configuration space scheme for ab initio polymer band structure calculations based on a Filon-type quadrature is proposed. This scheme avoids the explicit calculation and the storage of the “troublesome” Fourier transforms of the LCAO density matrix elements. Furthermore, the lattice sums (Coulomb and exchange) can be carried out up to infinity which removes the difficult problem of guessing limits to these summations. The potential of the proposed technique is illustrated by minimal basis set calculations on the infinite chains of H and He atoms.
