Notes: Summary Calcium antagonists are currently most widely used for chronic cerebral vasospasm after aneurysmal subarachnoid haemorrhage (SAH). However, the vasodilatory effects of systemically administered calcium antagonists can be limited secondary to hypotension. We previously compared intrathecal and intravenous routes of administration of nicardipine. Intrathecal administration of nicardipine significantly dilated spastic basilar arteries on day 7 in a two-haemorrhage canine model of vasospasm. In the present communication, the effects of prophylactic, serial administration of intrathecal nicardipine on vasospasm was examined in 50 patients. Patients were classified as Fisher SAH group 3 and all had their aneurysms clipped within 3 days of SAH. Following placement of a cisternal drain, 2 mg of nicardipine was injected, three times each day for an average of 10 days. The control group consisted of 91 similar patients with cisternal drainage not treated with nicardipine. Intrathecal administration of nicardipine decreased the incidence of symptomatic vasospasm by 26%, angiographic vasospasm by 20% and increased good clinical outcome at one month after the haemorrhage by 15%. Postoperative angiograms revealed that patients in the nicardipine group showed less vasospasm of major cerebral arteries, near the tip of a drain in the basal cistern, but vasospasm in the A2 and M2 segments was not decreased. Radio-isotope cisternography suggested that nicardipine might not reach the subarachnoid space around A2 and M2 segments. Nine patients complained of headache probably secondary to nicardipine induced vasodilation. Two patients suffered from mengingitis, both were successfully treated. Intrathecal administration nicardipine appears to be effective in the treatment of vasospasm, but side effects were significant.

Notes: The performance characteristics of a microwave plasma source are presented. The plasma source consists of two chambers: chamber 1 generates a high-density plasma over which a magnetic field is applied at electron cyclotron resonance condition or greater, and chamber 2 makes the plasma uniform in its lower region by surrounding the peripheral region with magnetic multipole line-cusp fields. Plasma parameters were measured with a movable Langmuir probe located 1 cm above a plasma grid which is attached at the bottom of chamber 2. The dependence of plasma parameters on the magnetic field configuration, gas pressure and microwave power were examined, and radial distributions were measured. Uniform high-density plasmas over a 9-cm-diam area were produced on the plasma grid in a suitable magnetic field configuration, and uniformity was maintained over a wide pressure range. The uniform density region was determined by the magnetic multipole fields existing in chamber 2's peripheral region. The ion beam current density evaluated from the extracted ion beam correlated well with the ion saturation current density estimated from the plasma parameters.

Notes: A new tunneling instrument has been developed to observe the anisotropy of the Fermi surface. This instrument has two advantageous mechanisms over the conventional scanning tunneling microscope (STM); a tilt mechanism to keep two crystals parallel to each other and a rotation mechanism of the proven crystal over the sample crystal. We have evaluated its performance.

Notes: Abstract Expression and localization of parathyroid hormone-related protein (PTHrP) in rat articular cartilage during fetal and postnatal periods were investigated by immunohistochemistry and in situ hybridization. PHTrP displayed distinct distribution and intensity of staining at different ages. In fetal (18-day-old) and young (3-week-old) rats, articular chondrocytes expressed abundant PTHrP throughout the entire thickness of cartilage. In contrast, in 60-week-old rats, PTHrP was expressed in a few articular chondrocytes of superficial and middle layers. Regulation of PTHrP and PTH/PTHrP receptor mRNA was also studied in cultured rat articular chondrocytes. Northern blot analysis revealed that both transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β), an important stimulator for chondrocyte proliferation and differentiation, and 10% fetal bovine serum (FBS) stimulated the expression of PTHrP mRNA with down-regulation of its receptor mRNA. In contrast, 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate (TPA) down-regulated the expression of receptor without changes of PTHrP mRNA level. These results suggest that the changes in abundance and localization of PTHrP and its receptor may be directly involved in the cell growth and differentiation of articular cartilage.

Notes: Abstract Fairly uniform Fe–C alloy deposits with bright appearance and characteristic black colour were obtained in Hull cell tests at 1.0A from baths with the following composition: FeSO4 0.5m or higher, citric acid 0.01m or lower, and pH around 2.0. The carbon content of the deposits from these baths ranged between 1.0 and 1.2wt% and the Vickers hardness was HV700 or above over a wide area of the Hull cell cathode. The thickness distribution of the deposits on the Hull cell cathode from these baths suggested that the current efficiency was 100% and the local current density obeyed the primary current distribution, except for the region near the low-current-density (LCD) end where the thickness decreased unexpectedly. The addition of chloride ion as NaCl, at concentrations of 1.0m or above, improved the thickness in the LCD region, and the thickness distribution on the Hull cell cathode suggested that current efficiency was 100% even at the LCD end. Chloride ion did no t affect the carbon content or the hardness of the deposits. Polarization measurements showed that the hydrogen ion reduction occurred at more noble potentials than Fe deposition. The unexpected thickness decrease near the LCD end, observed in Hull cell tests, and the improvement of this by adding chloride ion were both accounted for by the change in the preceding hydrogen ion reduction rate. The increase in citric acid concentration enhanced hydrogen ion reduction and therefore caused a lowering of current efficiency at low current densities. On the other hand, the addition of chloride ion inhibited hydrogen ion reduction and caused an increase in current efficiency at low current density.
