Notizen: A free radical copolymerization model is proposed for simulating the reaction rates and conversions of styrene monomer and unsaturated polyester resins during curing. This model is based on film theory in which the rate constants reflect both reaction and diffusion resistances. Differential scanning calorimetry in combination with Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy is used to measure the overall and individual reactivities of reacting species. Model parameters are determined from experimental data. The applicability of this model is demonstrated in a cure simulation.

Notizen: A multiparameter corresponding-states correlation has been developed to describe fossil-fluid thermodynamic properties needed to design fluid-flow, heat-exchange, and other unit operations in coal-liquefaction plants. Three equation-of-state parameters, a molecular-size/separation parameter, a molecular-energy parameter, and a molecular-orientation parameter are used to characterize nonpolar and slightly polar aromatic hydrocarbons. A conformal-solution model is developed for predicting thermodynamic properties of coal-derived mixtures.

Notizen: Thermoplastic additives tend to promote the phase separation during the reaction of unsaturated polyester resins. Consequently, they reduce the amount of shrinkage during curing. Several thermoplastic additives which resulted in significant different microstructure of cured resins were investigated. The effects of microstr acture formation on the sol-gel transition, reaction kinetics, and gelation time were studied. The mechanism of microstructure formation and causes of macro-gelation were explained by the influence of thermoplastic additives on the particle formation rate and inter-particle reaction rate during curing.

Notizen: In this study, an interpenetrating polymer network (IPN) based on a polyurethane (PU) and a partially end-capped unsaturated polyester (UPE) was prepared. The reaction-induced phase separation process of the IPN was studied using a phase contrast optical microscope and a transmission electron microscope (TEM), while reaction kinetics and onset of gelation were determined by a differential scanning calorimeter and a rheometer respectively. Except at low temperatures, the phase separation patterns were found to follow the spinodal decomposition mechanism. An interconnected phase developed quickly and was followed by coalescence of the periodic phase to form droplet/matrix type of morphology. A second level of phase separation also occurred within both the droplet and the matrix phases in some cases. The domain sizes resulting from both levels of phase separation gradually increased until the structure was locked by chemical gelation. Reaction temperature, PU reaction rate, and UPE reaction rate all had significant effects on the final morphology of the formed IPNs.

Notizen: A series of kinetic and rheological measurements were carried out using a differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) and a Rheometrics Dynamic Analyzer (RDA). The effects of temperature, inhibitor level, initiator level, and initiator type on the curing of unsaturated polyester resins were investigated. Two models based on the free radical polymerization mechanism were developed for predicting the time to reach liquid-solid transition. These models adapted a concept that gelation occurred at a critical radical concentration. The applicability of these models was compared to that of a statistical analysis.

Notizen: An experimental study has been carried out on rubber I transfer molding. It reveals that the filling is frequently limited more by the resistance of flow across the transfer pot than by resistance of flow through the sprue holes into the cavities. A mathematical model has been derived, which predicts semi-quantitatively the molding behavior observed. The mode1 predicts that fill time is proportional to the ratio of compound viscosity divided by molding pressure raised to about the fourth power. For the common cases where most of the fill time is from the resistance to the transverse flow on the top of the sprue plate, the fill time is proportional to about the fifth power of the ratio of transverse distance divided by the charge thickness. Experimental results showed that preheating and mastication of the compound reduced transfer time substantially. The charge pattern did not seem to have a major influence on transfer time.

Notizen: Two dilatometers are presented here that were developed for the use with, but not limited to, low-shrink unsaturated polyester resins. One of the dilatometers, made from a glass syringe and two aluminum plates, was limited to lower pressures. The other dilatometer, similar in design to the first, was made from a hydraulic cylinder and was capable of pressures to 500 psi. The dilatometers were calibrated and tested by the polymerization of styrene. Several low-shrink unsaturated polyester resins were cured in the dilatometers and the results of these experiments are given. The interactions of volume change, rheology change, conversion, and microstructure formation were also measured. Finally, the effect of pressure was considered.

Notizen: An experimental and theoretical study of reaction injection molding (RIM) of polyurea was conducted in this work. A lab-scale RIM machine was used to carry out the polyurea bulk polymerizations. A “free-table” viscometer was designed to measure the fast rheological changes and liquid-solid transition. A mathematical model was proposed to simulate the fast reaction and rheological changes in the polyurea RIM process. The parameters of this model were determined based on the solution polymerization data from FTIR and Haake rheometer measurements. Combined with an appropriate heat transfer equation, this model predicts fairly well the adiabatic temperature and viscosity rises of bulk polyurea reactions in RIM.

Notizen: Open-loop optimal temperature control strategies for the batch free radical polymerizations of styrene are investigated using the minimum principle. Two kinetic models, one considering the gel effect and the other incorporating both the gel effect and the glass effect, are employed. By using the Min-H strategy, a control variable program that minimizes one objective function and yields values of other terminal quantities can be obtained. It is found that the optimal temperature programs are highly dependent upon the kinetic characteristics of reactions. The gel and glass effects, which control ultimate molecular weights, play important roles in affecting the temperature programs. Numerical examples using two objective functions, one in which reaction time is minimized, and the other in which molecular weight distribution is minimized, are presented. The theoretical predictions using kinetic model with the gel and glass effects are also compared with experimental measurements of conversion, molecular weight, and molecular weight distribution. Although the agreement between the experimental work and the theory is less than satisfactory, the trends of policy improvements are consistent.

Notizen: The viscosity rise and conversion profile of polyurea reaction in solution were measured using a Haake viscometer and an FTIR, respectively. In a three-component polyurea system, it was found that the liquid-solid transition is dominated by the microphase separation from the formation of hard segments. The formation of soft segments mainly contributes to the initial viscosity buildup. A series of experiments were carried out to study the effects of resin composition, solvent concentration, and reaction temperature on the viscosity rise and gelation of polyureas.
