    Notes: Summary The effect of coenzyme Q (CoQ) homologues on the beating of myocardial cells was investigated in cultured cell sheets from mouse fetuses and quail embryos. Myocardial cell sheets grown in Eagle's minimum essential medium with fetal bovine serum showed very weak and irregular beating when this serum was removed from the medium. However, the depressed beating rate and amplitude recovered almost completely within a few minutes by adding CoQ10 to the medium, and the effect of Co10 continued over 1 h. CoQ9 showed a cardiostimulatory effect similar to that of CoQ10 but CoQ8 and COQ7 showed almost no effect. Short homologues (less than CoQ4) inhibited the beating of cell sheets. The cardiostimulatory effect of CoQ10 was not blocked by atenolol, a selective β-blocker. In addition, CoQ10 stimulated the formation of ATP, not cAMP. CoQ0 and COQ3 inhibited beating rates by inhibiting ATP formation. In conclusion, only native CoQ homologues having a nona- or decaprenyl group showed a cardiostimulatory effect on cultured myocardial cells, probably by stimulating mitochondrial ATP formation.

    Notes: Abstract p53 tumour suppressor gene mutations were studied in 118 renal cell carcinomas using paraffin-embedded surgical material. Optimal results were obtained with analysis of exon lengths between 150 and 200 base pairs for polymerase chain reaction. Single strand conformation polymorphism and sequencing analysis revealed only two point mutations (2/118, 2%): one involving codon 135; TGC→TTC (cysteine→phenylalanine) and the other codon 175; CGC→CAC (arginine→histidine). Both of these cases were classified as granular cell subtype on microscopic observation. The data suggest that the p53 tumour suppressor gene is not related to tumour initiation, promotion, or progression of renal cell carcinomas. However, there is the possibility that granular cell type carcinomas may have a different genetic background from clear cell type renal neoplasms.

    Notes: Abstract Chemical and structural characterization has been performed for thick (100–600 μm) and thin (10–100 μm) 2H/4H inter-polytype SnS2 crystals grown by low-temperature chemical vapour transport in the reverse temperature gradient geometry. X-ray diffraction shows that the 2H/4H-SnS2 phase transforms to single-crystal 2H-SnS2 in 6–12 months. The S/Sn ratio is 2.02±0.01 in thick crystals and 2.01±0.01 in thin crystals. Thermogravimetric/differential thermal analysis and the other characterization techniques show no difference between the two types of crystal. Extremely small quantities of carbon and oxygen and some chlorine were detected by secondary ion mass spectroscopy and/or X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). These elements are concentrated at the surface. The XPS data show a chemical shift of tin and sulphur in the surface layer, which is probably caused by the adsorbed carbon and oxygen; however, it cannot be explained by the formation of the usual oxides of tin and sulphur.

    Notes: Abstract Thermal shock resistance of an SiC fibre-(Nicalon®) reinforced borosilicate glass (Pyrex) and lithium aluminosilicate (LAS) matrix composite has been investigated experimentally in the temperature range 0–1000 K. Longitudinal Young's modulus and flexure strength of the composites after thermal shock were obtained as a function of thermal shock temperature. The results are discussed with the observed damage of the composite. The borosilicate glass matrix composite showed multiple cracking of the glass matrix perpendicular to the fibre axis when the thermal shock temperature was above 600 K. Decreases in Young's modulus and flexure strength were also recognized after multiple cracking of the matrix was initiated. On the other hand, the LAS matrix composite showed no damage at thermal shock temperatures below 800 K. However, at 800 K and above, microcracking of the matrix along the fibre axis was observed. After thermal shock, no decrease in the flexure strength was recognized, while the Young's modulus decreased due to microcracking of the matrix when the thermal shock temperatures were 800 K and above. It was found that the major advantage of the composite against thermal shock was to retain non-catastrophic failure properties even after the development of thermally induced damage in the composite.

    Notes: Summary A 16-year-old Japanese girl with 5,10-methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase deficiency showed peripheral neuropathy. There were no significant responses to vitamin B6, vitamin B12 or folate, given alone or in combination. With the addition of betaine monohydrate, she has been free from gait disturbance and muscle weakness. The concentration ofS-adenosylmethionine in cerebrospinal fluid, which was undetectable before receiving betaine monohydrate, increased to about the normal level 24 months after treatment with betaine monohydrate.

    Notes: Abstract Reactivity of positively charged cobalt cluster ions (Co n + ,n=2−22), produce by laser vaporization, with various gas samples (CH4, N2, H2, C2H4, and C2H2) were systematically investigated by using a fast-flow reactor. The reactivity of Co n + with the various gas samples is qualitatively consistent with the adsorption rate of the gas to cobalt metal surfaces. Co n + highly reacts with C2H2 as characterized by the adsorption rate to metal surfaces, and it indicates no size dependence. In contrast, the reactions of Co n + with the other gas samples indicate a similar cluster size dependence; atn=4, 5, and 10−15, Co n + highly reacts. The difference can be explained by the amount of the activation energy for chemisorption reaction. Compared with neutral cobalt clusters, the size dependence is almost similar except for Co 4 + and Co 5 + . The reactivity enhancement of Co 4 + and Co 5 + indicates that the cobalt cluster ions are presumed to have an active site for chemisorption atn=4 and 5, induced by the influence of positive charge.

    Notes: A novel method is described for the preparation of stable glass capillary columns (glass open tubular columns), including the etching and formation of a polymer film on the inner glass capillary surfaces. The approach used here is based on low-temperature plasma etching and polymerization. Under the influence of a field of radio frequency discharge, low pressure gases of fluoric compounds, introduced into the glass capillary tube, generate excited fluorine radicals which etch the inner surface. The plasma of organosilicone monomer in the glass capillary yields a uniform polymerized film on the inner surface. The resultant material functions as a good stationary phase for glass capillary gas chromatography (GC2). The inner surfaces treated with such a plasma, can be studied by means of a scanning electron microscope (SEM). The flexibility of this method permits the use of various stationary phases and surface modification.
