Notizen: Light scattering in a thin film of a mixture of dielectric and magnetic fluids has been studied under both electric and magnetic fields. The film can transmit visible light in no electric field. When an electric field is applied across the film, the transmittance decreases rapidly. The phenomenon is explained by Rayleigh scattering due to the dielectric clusters formed under the field. The decay time to return to the transmittance at no electric field after switching off the field is much larger than the response time after switching on the field; however, the usage of a magnetic as well as an electric field allows the decay time to be shortened.

Notizen: Fresh surfaces of polycrystalline Al-49.2%Cu, Al, and In are fabricated in duffusion pump oil, and observed in situ using a scanning tunneling microscope. The current images reflect the atomic arrays on their surfaces. More clear images with atomic resolution are observable about 10 h later compared with those just after the fabrication. Atomic resolution images are observable in oil several days after, with increasing noise.

Notizen: We report a technique to characterize carrier-trapping phenomena in SiO2 by measuring the Si 2p core-level energy of Si substrates covered with thin SiO2 layers as a function of x-ray irradiation time. It is found that the Si 2p peak energy, which corresponds to the band bending at the SiO2/Si interface, changes as the x-ray irradiation time increases. We attribute this to carrier-trapping phenomena in SiO2. By using this technique, it is found that the carrier-trapping phenomena differ remarkably among several chemical oxides. We also discuss the atomic structure of the traps that cause the trapping phenomena. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: In a serum-free culture containing no zinc, zinc enhanced the proliferation of T cells in response to interleukin 2 (lL-2), and also the in vitro production of lL-2 by T cells. Although the lymphocyte proliferation was partially inhibited by anti-IL-2 antibodies, it was completely inhibited by anti-IL-2 receptor (CD25) antibodies. A Scatchard plot analysis showed that zinc induced the expression of high-affinity receptors for IL-2 on lymphocytes. The results indicated that zinc may be essentially required for IL-2-mediated T-cell activation.

Notizen: Summary We report two patients who developed benign plasmacytosis with multiple skin lesions. The cases were characterized by hyperplasia of mature plasma cells, and polyclonal hypergammaglobulinaemia. One patient had hyperplasia of mature plasma cells not only in the skin, but also extensively in lymph nodes and the retroperitoneal areas around the ureters. The other had plasma cell hyperplasia limited to the skin. Extensive investigations failed to reveal any clinical or laboratory evidence suggesting the presence of any underlying disease accompanying the hypergammaglobulinaemia and/or plasma cell proliferation, such as chronic infectious disease, collagen disease or other chronic inflammatory disorder. Clinically and histologically, the first patient showed features compatible with a diagnosis of systemic plasmacytosis and the second with a diagnosis of cutaneous plasmacytosis. Significant serum interleukin-6 (IL-6) levels were detected in both patients, suggesting that IL-6 may be involved in the pathogenesis of these conditions.

Notizen: Two distinct groups of female-specific proteins, vitellogenin (VTG) and vitelline envelope proteins (VEP), were detected in the blood of the porcupine fish Diodon holocanthus, and annual changes in concentration were measured immunochemically. Using antisera against yolk proteins (ab.a-E) and VEP (ab. a-VEP), VTG and VEP could be detected in the blood of maturing female fish and oestradiol-17β (E2)-treated fish. Neither protein was detected in the blood of male fish. Immunohistochemistry showed that yolk globules and the vitelline envelope enclosing developing oocytes stained with ab.a-E. The vitelline envelope was stained specifically with ab.a-VEP. Hepatocytes from the E2-treated fish had immunoreactivity with both antisera. Thus, VTG and VEP appear to be synthesized in the liver by direct stimulation of E2, released into the circulation, and incorporated into respective target sites. VTG and VEP in female serum maintained high levels from April until June, suggesting that yolk accumulation, as well as vitelline envelope formation, are occurring actively during these months. Unlike VTG, small amounts of VEP were detected between December and March, suggesting that vitelline envelope formation precedes yolk accumulation and that a slightly different hormonal regulation exists in the synthesis of both proteins in the liver during the early phase of oogenesis.

Notizen: Summary This study was undertaken to examine the fate of articular cartilage in isogenic half-joint grafts implanted after storage by two-stage freezing. The antigenicity was evaluated quantitatively with regard to humoral and cellular immunological responses: none was seen in allogenic cartilage grafts. In the half-joint transplantations, the antigenicity of the cartilage need not be considered; only the antigenicity of cortical and cancellous bone must be reduced. Histologically, half-joint grafts stored at −196°C were superior to fresh allografts. Two-stage freezing, therefore, appears to be useful for the storage of articular cartilage.

Notizen: Summary This experimental study was undertaken in mice to investigate the procedures for storage of allogenic cancellous bone. Cancellous grafts were were stored at −80° C, −196° C or freeze dried. Grafts were implanted into a defect in the recipient's femur and after one week the cellular kinetic activity was analysed by autoradiography. For immunological study, the grafts were implanted into the recipient's muscle, and 2 weeks later the sensitising properties were examined by killer T-cell toxicity and the complement dependent cytotoxicity test. The capacity for osteogenesis of grafts frozen at −196° C was similar to or higher than those freeze dried, but it was low when storage was at −80° C. Immunogenicity was not affected by these three methods of storage and was very similar to that of fresh autografts. Antigenicity of allografts can be decreased by the freezing procedure. We suggest that the greater osteogenic potency after freezing at 196° C is related to the lesser degree of degeneration of the bone matrix.
