Notes: Abstract For the first time a simple sol-gel method has been developed for the preparation of [YBa2Cu3O x -Ag] composites using nitrates of Y, Ba, Cu, and Ag. For the two composites (with 10 and 20 wt% Ag), the electrical resistivities and magnetic susceptibilities (both alternating and direct current) show critical temperatureT c (zero) around 90–91 K. The X-ray diffraction studies indicate no major change of lattice parameters for the orthorhombic phase. The critical current density,J c, is found to be around 200 A cm−2 at zero field and 80 K. The degradation ofT c of the composites in presence of water is also very low, similar to the previous observations. This sol-gel method could be used for the large-scale production of superconducting composite powders necessary for drawing wires/tapes or targets for sputtering.

Notes: Abstract The conjugated polyenes β-carotene, lutein, retinoic acid and β-apo-8′-carotenal are shown to form charge-transfer (CT) complexes with the electron acceptor iodine. The conductivity increases by several orders of magnitude and the activation energy decreases on CT complex formation. Using these complexes as cathodic material, batteries with the configuration Mg/(polyene-iodine CT complex) /graphite are developed. Different battery parameters are evaluated. The effects of ambient temperature and humidity on battery performance are also studied. Results show that a β-apo-8′-carotenal-l2 based battery has the maximum power density and longest self-life and is suitable for use as a micro-electronic gadget energizer.

Notes: Summary Light-scattering behaviour of polyvinyl pyridine and silver nitrate mixture in alcohol showed that the system behaves like a poly-electrolyte. This has been explained by the structure of the pyridine-silver complex that has been known for quite some time.

Notes: Abstract We point out new contributions to the electric dipole moment of the neutron which arise in any model with spontaneous CP-violation. The effect is due to processes involving the exchange of a Higgs boson between the quarks constituting the neutron. In Weinberg's model, these new contributions are small compared to the single-quark contribution.

Notes: Abstract Both the dark- and photo-current-voltage characteristics of zeaxanthin and lutein is ohmic in the lower field regime followed by non-ohmic behaviour in the higher voltage regime, which has been satisfactorily explained by the anomalous Poole-Frenkel effect. A single dominant donor level is the major contributor to the dark-current while a single dominant trap level is the major contributor to the photo-current, both levels have been identified from Arrhenius type plots. Photo-action spectra suggest that the predominant mechanism of charge carrier generation is the same both in dark and illuminated conditions.

Notes: Ultrastructural changes in the efferent duct and in different regions of the epididymis in men with obstructive azoospermia were compared with corresponding tissues collected from men of proven fertility who underwent castration due to malignancy of the prostate. Major degenerative changes were seen in the efferent duct and the caput epididymidis of men with obstruction at the caput epididymidis which may have been induced by fluid pressure due to defective absorption of testicular fluid in the caput epididymidis. These degenerative changes included decrease in tubular and lumen diameter of the caput and the cauda epididymides, decrease in height of the stereocilia, reduction in-rough endoplasmic reticulum and Golgi material, and presence of lipofuscin and osmiophilic dense bodies. The degenerative changes were less when the site of obstruction was in the cauda epididymidis since fluid reabsorption would continue to take place normally in the caput epididymidis. In men who had undergone vasoepididymostomy (VEA), the ejaculated spermatozoa showed a high percentage of morphological abnormalities which may have occurred due to adverse effects of long-term obstruction on spermatogenesis. © 1993 Wiley-Liss Inc.
