Notes: A complex permeability is derived from a Chua-type magnetization model. The frequency characteristic of the complex permeability is calculated and compared with those of experiments. This complex permeability is applied to obtain the finite-element solutions of hysteretic fields. Examination of the field distributions suggests that the frequency characteristic of the magnetic materials is mainly dominated by the essential feature of complex permeability not the field distribution effects such as a skin effect.

Notes: Previously, a Chua-type model representing the magnetization characteristics of ferromagnetic materials was presented for computational analysis and design of magnetic devices. Typical magnetization characteristics, such as saturation, hysteresis, and aftereffect, have been reproduced by the model. In this paper, our Chua-type model is derived by means of the barlike domain walls model. As a concrete example, this model is applied to the computations of ferroresonance circuits and is compared with those of the experimental results. Agreement to a considerable extent confirms the validity of this model.

Notes: In order to calculate the magnetodynamic fields exactly, it is essential to work out a magnetization model. We have previously proposed a Chua-type magnetization model based on magnetic domain theory. This Chua-type model is now applied to typical ferromagnetic materials, such as iron, ferrite, and amorphous magnetic material. As a result, it is revealed that the typical magnetization characteristics of representative ferromagnetic materials can be satisfactory reproduced by our Chua-type model.

Notes: Among the various nondestructive testing methods, the electric potential method requires relatively simple device and measurement. However, because of the high electrical contact resistance, sometimes it is difficult to measure the correct local electric potentials by direct contact. In order to overcome this difficulty, method is proposed which involves substituting the local magnetic field for electric potential measurements. The comparison with the conventional electric potential method demonstrates the usefulness this method, especially for materials with low resistivity.

Notes: Previously, we have proposed a strategic dual image (SDI) method to obtain the finite element solution of open boundary magnetic field problems. Also, we have derived a complex permeability from a Chua-type magnetization model. Combination of this complex permeability with the SDI method is now applied to exploit a new high frequency characteristic measurement device for thin magnetic films. Numerical simulation suggests that our new measurement method yields far superior results compared with those of the conventional one.

Notes: Polyphase eddy current testing is proposed. The operating principle of this system is as follows. The polyphase eddy current testing system may be regarded as one of the polyphase transformers. Primary balanced polyphase coils are star connected and secondary polyphase circuits are composed of the target. When balanced polyphase currents are fed into the primary coils, zero phase voltage is detected if the target has defects. No zero phase voltage is detected if the target has no defects. It is found that this method has a higher sensitivity compared with that of conventional eddy current testing.

Notes: Simultaneous two- and three-band laser emissions were obtained in a process of mixing two and three kinds of dyes excited by a nitrogen laser. They were blue, green, and yellow in a coumarin 460 (C460)/disodium fluorescein (DF)/rhodamine 610 (R610) dye mixture, and blue, green, and red in a C460/DF/rhodamin 640 (R640) dye mixture. Strong energy transfers from DF to R610 and to R640 were shown. R610 and R640 laser emissions on mixing with DF were obtained at very low concentrations. They were 4×10−6 mol/l for R610 and 1×10−5 mol/l for R640, compared to the lasing threshold concentration of 1×10−4 and 2×10−4 mol/l of each dye alone. Also, the R610 radiation moved about 35 nm to a shorter wavelength at the reduced concentration.

Notes: In relation to theoretical predictions on the importance of randomness at the interface to determine the cause for giant magnetoresistance, argon acceleration voltage (VB) in ion beam sputtering was changed for preparing a set of CoxFe1−x/Cu multilayers. We found that the magnetoresistance as quite sensitive to the argon acceleration voltage and had a maximum around VB=600 V. Perfect antiferromagnetic coupling of the CoxFe1−x layers via thin Cu layers and the oscillation behavior of this indirect exchange coupling with a 12 A(ring) period were observed for VB=600 V. These results suggest the importance of the interface state for giant magnetoresistance in multilayers. We also found that a small saturation field can be induced, which can be explained by the metamagnetic transition associating the relation of Ku(approximately-greater-than)J/tCoFe.

Notes: Magnetization processes are investigated by calculation and experiments for Co-Fe/Cu multilayers with giant magnetoresistance, which are prepared on MgO(110) substrates using ion beam sputtering and have in-plane uniaxial magnetic anisotropy (Ku). The experiments show the metamagnetic transition from antiferromagnetic spin structure to ferromagnetic one for an easy axis external field. This is supported by calculation of the magnetic phase diagram for stable magnetization configurations, which shows the metamagnetic transition to occur for (J12/d)/Ku≤1, where J12 is antiferromagnetic layer interaction and d is magnetic layer thickness. The saturation fields from antiferromagnetic to ferromagnetic spin structures are substantially decreased by induction of the in-plane uniaxial anisotropy. The relation Hsh − 2Hse = 2Ku/Ms, found for the saturation fields by the calculation, is confirmed experimentally for the multilayers, where Ms is the saturation magnetization, and Hse and Hsh are the saturation fields for the external field parallel to the easy and hard axes, respectively.

Notes: The anaesthetic management of a patient with Eaton-Lambert myasthenic syndrome undergoing thoracotomy is described. Epidural anaesthesia, in combination with a light level of general anaesthesia, provided good operating conditions and postoperative analgesia. Pulmonary function and ventilatory responses to carbon dioxide and hypoxia were measured before operation. These tests were repeated after the epidural administration of 8 ml 2% lignocaine before surgery and after 2 mg morphine sulphate in 10 ml saline postoperatively. Minor reductions in some of the ventilatory parameters were observed. The epidural technique appears to be a useful and safe method by which to manage patients with Eaton–Lambert syndrome undergoing thoracotomy.
