Notes: The Laplace equation can be solved in any two- and three-dimensional porous medium by means of a vectorized numerical code. It is applied to several structures such as random media derived from site percolation; close to the percolation threshold, the critical exponents are found to be very close to the ones corresponding to networks; the results are usefully compared to previous variational upper bounds and to the prediction of an approximate space renormalization. Media with double porosity such as catalyst pellets are also addressed. Finally the conductivity of most fractals is shown to follow an Archie's law in the limit of large generation numbers; the exponents of the power laws can be retrieved by various renormalization arguments.

Notes: In homogeneous porous media, the analytical expression of the dispersion tensor D* can be calculated by the method of moments and by a multiple scale expansion; the symmetric component of this tensor is identical in both cases. Numerically, D* can be computed by two methods, namely the B equation and random walks. The porous media are modeled as being spatially periodic; D* is determined as a function of the Péclet number for four types of unit cells: deterministic, fractal, random, and reconstructed. A systematic comparison is made with existing numerical and experimental data. The long time behavior, and its Gaussian limit, is documented.

Notes: Abstract Fracture non-union in the pediatric population may span the age range from childhood to adolescence. Fracture non-union in children and adolescents is often due to an underlying cause such as affliction with neurofibromatosis or osteogenesis imperfecta. Although less commonly seen, non-union may occur in the otherwise healthy pediatric population. We report three cases of fracture non-union of the distal end of the fibula in the pediatric age group. All three were characterized by persistent local pain and tenderness following injury with radiographic evidence of fracture non-union. All three had undergone conservative treatment with extended periods of immobilization. Following surgery, all three had marked improvement of their local symptomatology. One patient's course was complicated by reflex sympathetic dystrophy syndrome. In two patients, resection of the un-united fragment at the distal fibula resulted in marked relief from pain without any increase in ankle instability. We postulate that the fracture non-union resulted in a fibrotic reaction that was so extensive that ankle stability was maintained even after removal of the fracture fragment.

Notes: Abstract A photoemission study of the ‘green phase’ Y2BaCuO5, including core level spectra of the elements, CuL 3VV Auger, and XPS and UPS valence band spectra has been performed. The crystal structure of Y2BaCuO5 contains discrete [CuO5]8− units with divalent copper. The surface status of the Y2BaCuO5 samples is discussed with respect to the problems encountered in photoemission studies of the YBaCuO superconductors. The photoemission data are analysed within a simple cluster configuration interaction model by considering in addition previously reported optical spectra. Y2BaCuO5 is a charge transfer insulator with the charge transfer energy Δ≈0.5 eV being much smaller than thed−d Coulomb interaction energyU≈6eV. Cluster model parameters and valence band shapes of Y2BaCuO5 are compared with those of Nd2CuO4 the structure of which contains divalent copper within an extended copper-oxygen network. More detailed cluster and impurity models for cuprates described in literature are discussed in view of the present results.

Notes: Abstract Egg production under laboratory conditions was examined over the lifespan of Heliothis zea (Boddie) and Spodoptera ornithogalli Guenée (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae). Although H. zea oviposits singly and S. ornithogalli oviposits in masses, temporal trends were similar. Egg numbers peaked shortly after mating and then rapidly declined. Egg weights also peaked shortly after mating, but decreased gradually over time. Temporal oviposition patterns were more erratic for unmated than mated females, suggesting the importance of mating in establishing the shape of the oviposition curve.

Notes: Abstract Core level and valence band photoemission spectra of the “124” superconductor ErBa2Cu4O8 are investigated using MgK α, HeI, and HeII radiation and compared with photoemission spectra of orthorhombic YBa2Cu3O7 and tetragonal YBa2Cu3O6.2 samples. It is found that the Cu 2p 3/2 core level and the UPS valence band spectra of ErBa2Cu4O8 and YBa2Cu3O7 are very similar but differ significantly from those of YBa2Cu3O6.2. From the resemblance between the ErBa2Cu4O8 and YBa2Cu3O7 spectra it follows that the electronic structures of these two compounds are closely related in spite of an additional CuO chain in the “124” phase. The differences between the YBa2Cu3O6.2 spectra and the other spectra are explained by the the presence of monovalent copper at the crystallographic Cu(1) sites. The Cu 2p 3/2 lineshapes of the here studied superconductors and some CuII compounds are discussed.

Notes: Abstract The transport properties of continuous deterministic fractals are reviewed. The method of construction, the fractal dimension, and the major features of transport are summarized. Then the major single-phase transports are addressed; attention is focused on the numerical results and on the analytical arguments which may be used to derive these results in a simple way, whenever it is possible.
