Notes: Summary The gall-forming aphidCerataphis fransseni produces soldiers that defend against predators. Soldiers are produced soon after colony foundation and the number of soldiers increases nonlinearly during colony growth. The number of soldiers scales to the square-root of the number of non-soldiers and linearly to the surface area of the gall. This suggests that soldiers are produced to defend an area, for example the perimeter of the colony or the surface of the gall, rather than individual aphids.

Notes: Summary A competitive radioimmunoassay for the quantitative determination of glycated haemoglobin was developed. The antiserum, obtained by immunizing guinea pigs with reduced glycated human albumin, was capable of identifying and quantitating the glucitollysine residues of glycated Hb after reduction with sodium borohydride. To simplify the sample preparation we introduced trichloroacetic acid precipitation to remove unreacted sodium borohydride instead of using dialysis or gel filtration. Using this procedure, our radioimmunoassay became relatively simple and provided satisfactory within- and between-run (1.3–2.8% and 1.9–5.4% coefficient of variation, respectively). The radioimmunoassay method was compared to the measurement of HbA 1c by high performance liquid chromatography which is the most widely used method for quantitating glycated Hb. For this purpose glycated Hb was measured in normal glucose tolerance, impaired glucose tolerance, and diabetes mellitus groups based on WHO criteria. Both assays were able to discriminate between the normal and diabetic groups. In addition, while the determination of glycated Hb by the radioimmunoassay method was able to clearly discriminate between the normal and impaired glucose tolerance groups, the determination of HbA 1c by the high performance liquid chromatography method failed to discriminate between these two groups. Moreover, 15 of the 20 impaired glucose tolerance patients exceeded the upper normal range (mean normal values + 2 SD) in radioimmunoassay. But all 20 patients with impaired glucose tolerance were within the upper normal range in HbA 1c values. These results demonstrate that the measurement of glycated Hb by radioimmunoassay is more sensitive than the measurement of HbA 1c by high performance liquid chromatography since it can discriminate between the normal and impaired glucose tolerance groups.

Notes: Abstract Endoscopic ultrasound was performed in 56 patients with histologically or clinically proven mediastinal or lung diseases. These 56 patients comprised 12 with sarcoidosis, 8 with lymphoma, 20 with lung cancer, 10 with oesophageal cancer, and 6 with other diseases. A 7.5 MHz electronic linear-arrayed ultrasonic endoscope was used. In 38 of the 56 patients lymph nodes were detected by endoscopic ultrasound. Eleven patients with sarcoidosis showed lymph nodes in a “facet formation” (like stones in an old stone wall), while lymph nodes in the other 27 patients were round in shape and did not form facets. The “facet formation sign”, evaluated by endoscopic ultrasound, may be a characteristic finding in sarcoidosis.

Notes: This work presents the first report on the growth mechanism of 123 films on metallic substrates with (200) oriented and partially a-b plane oriented polycrystalline yttria stabilized zirconia (YSZ) buffer layer, with and without a metallic underlayer coating used between the substrate and the buffer layer. The microstructure and grain morphology of 9- and 160-nm-thick films of Y1Ba2Cu3O7−δ (YBCO) were studied by scanning electron microscopy, scanning tunneling microscopy, and x-ray diffraction. Our studies reveal that YBCO films on c-axis oriented and partial a-b plane oriented YSZ buffer layers on metallic substrates, initially grow two dimensionally, with the elongated grains of ∼100 nm length, mostly aligned along the 〈200〉 axis of the YSZ, owing to the strong atom-substrate bonding. The thicker films, however, show three-dimensional terraced island growth with several turns of the screws, with the screw edges still along the 〈200〉 axis of YSZ. These terraced islands seem to coalesce in the film with the highest Jc value, ∼1×105 A/cm2.

Notes: The characteristics of microchannel plates (MCPs) for x-ray detection have been investigated with continuous x-ray energy variation using synchrotron radiation in the XUV and soft x-ray region (from 60 to 600 eV). The current response data have shown x-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS or XANES) near the oxygen K absorption edge as well as a jump structure near the silicon L edge; these structures are explained by the surface composition of channel walls (SiO2). The data show that the surface layer of a microchannel is essential for x-ray detection by MCPs in this energy range. The precise current response curve has been completed for the wide x-ray energy range from 0.06 to 82 keV combined with the previously reported data [Kondoh et al., Rev. Sci. Instrum. 59, 252 (1988); Cho et al., ibid. 59, 2453 (1988); Yamaguchi et al., ibid. 60, 368, 2307 (1989)].

Notes: Summary. Ovarian arterial velocimetry, using real-time two-dimensional and pulsed Doppler ultrasound, was performed on 36 occasions in nine healthy women with regular menstrual cycles. The change in ovarian arterial compliance was based on the calculation of pulsatility index (PI). In the active ovary carrying a dominant follicle or corpus luteum, the PI in the early follicular phase (mean 6.97, SD 2.01) was significantly higher than that in the late follicular phase (mean 2.36, SD 0.31) (P〈0.001), and the PI in the early luteal phase (mean 0.68, SD 0.09) was significantly lower than that in the late follicular phase (P〈0.001). The PI in the late luteal phase (mean 0.93, SD 0.16) was significantly higher than that in the early luteal phase (P〈0.01). In the inactive ovary, no cyclical changes were seen in the values of PI. There was a significant difference between the values of PI in the active ovary and the inactive ovary in the late follicular, the early and the late luteal phases [2-36 (SD 0-31)] vs [6-29 (SD 1-02)], [0-68 (SD 0.09)] vs [6.18 (SD 1.33)], [0.93 (SD 0.16) vs [6-57 (SD 1.72)] (P〈0.001), respectively. Use of non-invasive Doppler ultrasound to study physiology of ovarian haemodynamics during the menstrual cycle is of great clinical relevance and paves the way for further investigations on sterility.

Notes: Intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1), a member of the immunoglobulin supergene family, is known to play an important role in inflammatory diseases. Using a previously developed enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) with two monoclonal antibodies (MoAbs) against human ICAM-1, levels of soluble ICAM-1 (sICAM-1) were measured in sera from patients with collagen diseases and in synovial fluids (SF) from patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Although the results did not demonstrate that RA and other collagen diseases, as a group, had significantly higher levels of sICAM-1 in sera as compared with healthy controls, 21 of 138 cases (15%) with collagen diseases and 11 out of 57 patients (19%) with RA clearly showed higher levels of sICAM-1 in the sera. Comparisons between RA patients of radiological stages I and II and between stage I and other stages showed significantly higher levels of sICAM-1 in the sera of patients in the latter stages. RA patients with vasculitis and/or pneumonitis showed significantly higher levels of sICAM-1 than those without vasculitis or pneumonitis. Significant correlations were demonstrated between sICAM-1 and the factors IgG-RF, IgM-RF, erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) and TNF-α in sera of RA patients. In addition, it was noted that the levels of sICAM-1 in SF were as high as those in the sera of patients with RA.

Notes: Abstract Barium ethyl(octyl)phosphate (EOP), ((C2H5O)(C8H17O)PO 2 − )2Ba2+, was synthesized and the phase diagram of the EOP-water system consisting of four regions (I, II, III, and IV) was determined. The phase structure was studied from the self-diffusion coefficients obtained by the1H pulsed-gradient NMR method. In region I, a critical micelle concentration (CMC) was found, indicating the presence of a monomer ⇆ micelle equilibrium. Region II is a two-phase area in which regions I and III coexist. For region III, the structure of the aggregate system was found to depend upon the concentration.

Notes: Summary Dural arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) in the posterior cranial fossa are relatively infrequent. Intradural haemorrhage is one of their specific complications. Angiographic demonstration of varices or aneurysmal structures is one of the hallmarks of severe cases. We report a patient with posterior cranial fossa dural AVM associated with a varix mimicking a thrombosed aneurysm on CT and MRI. Internal carotid and vertebral angiography failed to demonstrate an aneurysm, but external carotid injection revealed a dural AVM affecting the sigmoid sinus, and a varix. The AVM was completely eliminated by embolization. When a dural AVM is suspected clinically selctive angiography should be performed to confirm the diagnosis even when CT or MRI do not show dilated vessels.

Notes: Abstract Acquired spinal epidermoid tumours are rare, and probably caused by skin fragments that have been transplanted by trauma or lumbar puncture. They almost always occur in the region of the cauda equina. We present an acquired spinal epidermoid tumour at the T 10 level, with pathological confirmation. A skin fragment had migrated to a site where it developed into a tumour.
