Notes: Abstract Polyvinyl butyral (PVB) was used as a dispersant for BaTiO3 in a toluene-methanol system and its efficiency was evaluated by measuring the zeta potential and by a rheological study of the suspension. Addition of only 1.6 vol % low-molecular-weight (50 000) PVB is effective in making a well-dispersed suspension. But a lower concentration (0.6 vol %) of high-molecular-weight (200 000) PVB is necessary to stabilize the suspension due to the longer chain length of the polymer, which enhances steric stabilization. Dispersion of BaTiO3 by PVB is better in a reverse azeotropic composition of toluene-methanol (72.4∶27.6) than in an azeotropic composition.

Notes: Abstract Studies on the preparative and microstructural aspects of plasma-dissociated Indian zircon prepared in a specially designed plasma reactor (20 kW) are reported. The vital parameters involved in the process have been optimized for a high degree of dissociation with maximum feed rate. A near total phase separation (ZrO2 and SiO2) has been achieved in the plasma-dissociated zircon spheroids which constitute over 90% of the product. Microstructural studies have revealed that the spheroids are of two types with a distinct difference in the morphology of zirconia crystallites. Most of the spheroids have been found to have well-developed polygonal grains with spherulitic growth of ZrO2 in SiO2 glass. The rest of the spheroids consist of intergrown tabular crystals of monoclinic zirconia set in a matrix of silica. The silica present in the plasma-dissociated zircon has been amorphous and highly reactive, and is leached out using hot NaOH solution to recover fine grain zirconia.

Notes: The thermal properties of epoxidized natural rubber (ENR) have been found to improve upon hydrogenation in a solution phase, in the presence of a homogeneous catalyst, at 50°C. The hydrogenated ENR shows higher Tmax values in the DTG scan and, upon aging, the change in carbonyl concentration is less as compared to that of ENR, as detected by IR spectrophotometry. The hydrogenated product was characterized by IR and 1H-NMR spectroscopy. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
