    Notes: Abstract. Biomass productivity, photosynthetic efficiency and fatty acid profiles of the marine microalga Tetraselmis sp. in a turbidostat culture system using an outdoor photobioreactor are described. The maximum productivity depended on the units in which it was expressed; it reached 5·41 × 10−3 g/l/h in volumetric units, and 7·26g/m2/day in surface units, the former at the smallest culture depth (0·12m) and the latter at the greatest culture depth (0·25 m). Data from the experiments were adjusted to an equation for light limitation. The comparison of fatty acid composition at both depths showed that biosynthesis of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), including eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), was favoured when available light was low (0·17 m). Moreover, fatty acid 16:0 seemed to be an indicator of the type of limitation in the culture, i.e. nutrient or light limitation.

    Notes: Abstract We had the opportunity to study a family with one of the most destructive forms of periodontal disease known, the Papillon-Lefèvre syndrome. The parents had no consanguinity and were not affected, and were therefore to be considered carriers of the disease. 2 sisters, the eldest and youngest, showed periodontal breakdown and hyperkeratotic skin lesions, but their deciduous dentition was not affected. 2 brothers had skin lesions only and another brother and sister were healthy. Furthermore, 2 babies died at birth one after a 9-month pregnancy and the other after a 6-month pregnancy, and the mother also suffered 3 miscarriages. For 4 years, we studied the family: in the case of both sisters, mechanical periodontal treatment and antibiotics were unable to control the disease. In the chromosomic study of the 2 sisters affected, the GTG banding technique found no trace of anomalies in the cells analyzed, whose chromosomic formation was 46, XX. Before treatment, the chemotaxis of the PMN, the phagocytosis of opsonized Staphylococcus aureus, and production of superoxide radicals by PMN was significantly impaired in both sisters. Despite scaling and root planing, the periodontal lesions still progressed, but the PMN functions evaluated were now normal in both sisters. An orally asymptomatic but dermatologically affected brother showed no significant defect in the phagocytic activity and the production of superoxide radicals.

    Notes: Isochrysis galbana rich in eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) has been grown as a chemostat culture at 20° C and pH 8.00 controlled by CO2 injection. From a low dilution rate (D) of 0.0024 h−1 to 0.0377 h−1, close to maximum growth, a decrease in EPA content from 5.21% dry weight (d.w.) to 2.80% d.w. was observed, although the percentage of EPA in the total fatty acids increased. Lipids were fractionated, EPA being the major fatty acid found in the glycolipid fraction, whereas in the neutral lipid fraction were mainly palmitic and palmitoleic acids. At the same time, the biomass concentration also decreased from 1015 mg·l−1 to 202 mg·l−1 over the range of Ds mentioned. Nonetheless, EPA productivity had a maximum value of 15.26 mg·l−1·day−1 at D=0.0208 h−1.

    Notes: Abstract Eicosapentaenoic (EPA) and docosahexaenoic (DHA) acid productivities from chemostat cultures of an isolate of Isochrysis galbana have been studied. The productivities reached in the interval of dilution rates between 0.0295 h−1 and 0.0355 h−1 were 1.5mg·1−1·h−1 for lipids, 300 μg·1−1·h−1 for EPA and 130μg1·1−1·h−1 for DHA. Furthermore, light attenuation by mutual shading, and agitation speed influences on growth and fatty acid composition were analysed. A model relating steady-state dilution rates to internal average light intensity has been proposed, the parameter values of which obtained by non-linear regression were: maximum specific growth rate (μmax)=0.0426 h−1; the affinity of cells to light (Ik) = 10.92 W·m−2; the exponent (n) = 5.13; regression coefficient (r 2)=0.9999.

    Notes: Abstract We have studied the ethanolic fermentation of D-xylose with Pachysolen tannophilus in batch cultures. We propose a model to predict variations in D-xylose consumed, and biomass and ethanol produced, in which we include parameters for the specific growth rate, for the consumption of D-xylose and production of ethanol either related or not to growth. The ideal initial pH for ethanol production turned out to be 4.5. At this pH value the net specific growth rate was 0.26 h−1, biomass yield was 0.16 g.g−1, the cell-maintenance coefficient was 0.073 g.g−1.h−1, the parameter for ethanol production non-related to growth was 0.064 g.g−1,h−1 and the maximum ethanol yield was 0.32 g.g−1.

    Notes: We have studied the enzymatic hydrolysis of whey proteins at pH 8 and50°C with two proteases of bacterial origin, MKC Protease 660 L, and one of animal origin, PEM 2500 S. Our results show that a greater degree of hydrolysis is achieved under the same experimental conditions with the bacterial proteases than with the animal one. In our interpretation of the results we propose a mechanism in which the hydrolytic reaction is a zero-order one for the substrate, and the enzyme denaturalizes simultaneously via a second-order kinetic process due to free enzyme attacking enzyme bound to the substrate. Our results also indicate that there is an irreversible serine-protease inhibitor in whey proteins. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: Using high-pressure liquid chromatography we studied the distribution of molecular weights in whey-protein hydrolysates using the following commercially obtained proteases: Alcalasa 0.6 L and Protease 660 L, both bacterial in origin, and PEM 2500 S, of animal origin. In each of the systems, the range of molecular weights in the hydrolysate depended solely on the degree of hydrolysis (DH) achieved. For DH ≥ 20, between 65% and 95% of the hydrolysate is made up of peptides with a molecular weight of less than 1,000 Da. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
