Notes: Objective To study the fibrinolytic pathways and their relationship with the contact system in women using combined oral contraceptives (COCs).Design Serial plasma samples were collected from 18 women before treatment with COCs containing 30 μg oestrogen during treatment cycles 3 and 6, and 2 weeks after stopping treatment. Fibrinolysis was measured before and after dextran sulphate mediated contact activation using fibrin plates. Results Fibrinolysis increased significantly during cycles 3 and 6 (from 77% to 100% and 113%, respectively, P〈0.01) and showed a further increase after dextran sulphate activation (from 134% to 158% and 167%, respectively, P〈0.01). Tissue-plasminogen activator, urokinase-plasminogen activator and plasminogen activator inhibitor did not change significantly. There were significant elevations of Factor XII (from 0.92 μ/ml to 1.43 u/ml, P〈0.01) and prekallikrein (0.94 u/ml to 1.10 u/ml, P〈0.05) in cycle 3, which both remained high at cycle 6 (P〈0.01) and decreased after stopping the COC. Alpha-2-macroglobulin and C1-esterase inhibitor showed no significant change, but alpha-1-antitrypsin increased from 0.85 u/ml to 1.11 u/ml by cycle 3 (P〈0.01), and returned to near normal levels after stopping the COC.Conclusions The increase in fibrinolysis may be due to increased levels of Factor XII and prekallikrein without a corresponding increase in their natural inhibitors (C1-esterase inhibitor and alpha-2-macroglobulin). A parallel increase in the intrinsic pathway of coagulation may be limited by elevated alpha-1-antitrypsin at the level of activated Factor XI. The increase in fibrinolysis caused by oral contraceptives may balance any potential thrombotic risk due to increased fibrinogen or vitamin K dependent coagulation factors.

Notes: Abstract The effects of vanadium substitution on the iron magnetism in YFe12-x V x compounds (x∼2–4) have been studied by57Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy. The preference of vanadium atoms for the 8i site of these ThMn12-structure type compounds is confirmed. The rapid collapse of the iron sublattice magnetization with increasing vanadium concentration is analysed in terms of the ‘magnetic valence’ model.

Notes: Abstract The precipitation of the fcc γ-phase of iron has been studied by a systematic series of isothermal and isochronal (0–48 h) heat treatments (300–800°C) on a supersaturated solution ofCuFe containing 3 at% Fe. The optimal conditions (450–600°C) for precipitation of the maximum fraction (90%) of iron attainable within 48 h in the form of γ-Fe have been delineated from analysis of the room temperature spectra. The time dependence for formation of γ-Fe precipitates is well described by the equation for long term annealing. An activation energyE a ≈0.6 eV for the formation of γ-Fe in Cu is obtained. It indicates short range rather than long range diffusion in theCuFe sample studied.

Notes: Abstract X-band magnetic resonance measurements have been carried out on Zr2NiHx (x=0–5). The room temperature results indicate the presence of Ni atom clusters which form during the hydrogenation process. The intensity of the resonance signal depends on the hydrogenation treatment.

Notes: Abstract High energy ball-milling of Fe and B powders of starting composition Fe66B34 resulted in an alloy which revealed both a nanostructural state and a disordered amorphous-like state and a majority of unreacted components. The disordered phase is located in the interfacial regions between the Fe and B atoms. The ball-milled sample was annealed at low temperatures (250–350°C) to examine further the proposition that solid-state reaction is the mechanism of amorphization by mechanical alloying. A slight reaction between the Fe and B grains which were previously unreacted, probably limited to their contacting boundaries, has been detected.

Notes: Abstract Mössbauer spectra of LaCo12B6 doped with57Fe have been obtained at various temperatures between 4.2 and 293 K. The observed splitting of the subspectrum associated with the 18h site belowT C indicates that the Co sublattice of LaCo2B6 remains ordered in the crystallographic basal plane, with no discernible change in magnetic ordering direction belowT C, contrary to the recent suggestion of a change in magnetic states based on NMR data.

Notes: Abstract A set of La1−xYxMn2Si2(57Fe) samples withx=0, 0.1, 0.15, 0.2, 0.25, 0.3, 0.5 and 1.0 have been prepared with the tetragonal ThCr2Si2 structure.57Fe Mössbauer spectra have been collected at 4.2 K for all samples. The spectra can be well fitted by two sextets, the predominant one (∼90% of the spectral area) being associated with57Fe atoms in the Mn 4d site, with the remainder located in the Si 4e site. The analysis shows that there are distinct changes in the hyperfine interaction parameters for samples above and below the critical concentrationx c ∼ 0.15, at which a transition from ferromagnetism to antiferromagnetism occurs. This transition is a result of a change in the exchange interactions linked with changes in the interatomic distances, due to the smaller atomic volume of Y compared to that of La.

Notes: Abstract A detailed analysis of room temperature57Fe Mössbauer spectra ofAuFe (5 at.% Fe) andCrFe (5, 10 at.% Fe) samples is presented. The deviation from Lorentzian line shape observed in the spectra indicates both thickness effects and structural disorder in these systems. The thickness effect has been taken into account using a new fitting technique that solves the transmission integral numerically rather than relying on the “thin absorber approximation”. The present results and analyses using both the thin absorber approximation and the full transmission integral methods on these alloy systems are compared with earlier results obtained on these alloy systems using only the thin absorber approximation.

Notes: Abstract An analysis of the 4.2 K spectra of FexO (x∼0.91) and (Fe0.4Mg0.6)xO is presented in which it is considered that because of the large electric field gradient at Fe2+ defect sites, the spectra cannot be described by Lorentzian sextets. It is assumed that the magnetic hyperfine field vector is oriented at random in the coordinate system defined by the EFG main axis, and that the EFG coordinate system is also distributed randomly. The simplifying assumption of the asymmetry parameter η=0 allows an analytical formula to be used to describe the complex spectra. Distributions of both magnetic hyperfine field and quadrupole interaction were progressively refined resulting in reasonable fits to the spectra with the main features being well reproduced. The magnetic hyperfine field distribution is rather broad with several features present while distinct values were obtained in the distribution of quadrupole interactions. These latter values are considered to correspond to the defect configurations around the Fe2+ sites. The distribution of hyperfine fields is considered to reflect the varying strengths of superexchange due to the high defect concentration as well as the effects of magnetic relaxation.

Notes: Abstract Mössbauer effect, a.c. susceptibility and magnetisation studies (4.2≦T≦350 K, −20≦H≦20 kOe) show that in the mixed spined ferrite Ga0.4Fe0.6NiAlO4, spin freezing occurs via cluster formation. As in some other insulating spin glasses, the spin glass phase diagram transitions occur not for individual spins but for clusters whose effective spins’ transverse and longitudinal components successively freeze. The presence of entropic spins and the centre shift of the field cooled hysteresis loop confirm the system’s frustrated nature.
