    Notes: Abstract Regional metamorphic rocks that form Late Palaeozoic subduction complexes in central Queensland, Australia, are products of two metamorphic episodes. Synaccretion metamorphism (M1) gave rise to prehnite-pumpellyite and greenschist facies rocks, whereas a subsequent episode (M2) at about 250 Ma formed upper greenschist to upper amphibolite facies rocks of both intermediate- and low-pressure type, probably in a compressive arc or back-arc setting. A similar pattern can be recognized for 1000 km along the New England Fold Belt, although at several localities, where higher grade rocks are exposed, metamorphism was essentially continuous over the M1-M2 interval, with a rapid rise in geothermal gradient at the end of accretion. Where out-stepping of tectonic elements has occurred at long-lived convergent margins elsewhere, similar overprinting of high- by lower-pressure facies series is anticipated, complicating the tectonic interpretation of metamorphism. The discrete character of metamorphic events may be blurred where conditions giving rise to a major episode of accretion and out-stepping are followed by the subduction of a major heat source.

    Notes: A method is described whereby the unit cell of a crystal and its orientation can be determined from a single Laue diffraction pattern (in transmission). The axial ratios and interaxial angles can be determined precisely, but the absolute scaling of the cell depends upon the accuracy with which the minimum wavelength for the experiment is known. Several examples are given.

    Notes: Single-crystal Laue diffraction patterns have not hitherto been used for the precise determination of unit-cell dimensions, although axial ratios and interaxial angles have frequently been derived. Here, we use an attenuator such as 0.1 mm palladium foil in the white synchrotron-radiation beam incident on the crystal; the absorption edge (e.g. palladium at 0.509 Å) then sharply defines the minimum wavelength present. With gnomonic projections in the manner described by Carr, Cruickshank & Harding [J. Appl. Cryst. (1992), 25, 294–308], the unit-cell dimensions on an absolute scale can be derived. Three tests show that these dimensions are correct to circa 0.5%.

    Notes: Summary Hypercapnia induces initial constriction and prolonged relaxation of rat small mesenteric arteries. The mechanism of the relaxation is unknown, but has been attributed to lowering of pHi in the vascular smooth muscle. In this study we have investigated the response to raised PCO2 at constant pHo, in mesenteric small arteries precontracted with noradrenaline. 10% CO2 led to a fall in pHi associated with acute potentiation of tension, and subsequent relaxation. The relaxation did not occur in arteries in which the endothelium had been removed, nor in arteries pretreated with the nitric oxide synthase inhibitor, L-NAME (10−4M, NG-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester). The D-enantiomer, D-NAME, was without effect. We conclude that hypercapnic-induced vasodilatation in this circulation occurs via endothelium derived nitric oxide production.

    Notes: Abstract Polymerization-induced colloid aggregation is used to synthesize spheres of narrow size distribution which are porous aggregates of ZrO2 colloids. Variation of the reaction pH has been investigated to determine the optimum rate of polymerization of the urea-formaldehyde resin. At the optimum rate, a colloid packing structure is formed where a balance of high porosity and high strength of the aggregates is achieved. This optimum coincides with the maximum yield of the ∼5 μm sintered (polymer-free) particles. Particles synthesized at pH values below the optimum are mechanically weak; some are hollow spheres. Variation of the pore structure, and thus colloid packing structure, is elucidated by nitrogen adsorption and apparent density measurements. Differences on either side of the optimum pH are related to the efficiency of polymer-bridge formation between colloids.

    Notes: This article demonstrates that even 1% polydispersity in hollow-fiber diameters can increase plate heights by as much as an order of magnitude. The demonstration includes an analytical extension of the Taylor-Aris and the Golay dispersion theories, a numerical solution using the measured polydisperity, and successful predictions of the performance of different hollow-fiber systems over a range of flow rates. All these results show that the effect of polydispersity can dominate column performance, especially in the region where the column efficiency is optimal.

    Notes: Racemic leucine can be separated into d- and l-isomers by fractional extraction across microporous hollow fibers. In this extraction, an aqueous solution of the racemate is fed to the lumen of the fibers, and an octanol solution of dodecyl-l-hydroxyproline flows countercurrently outside of the fibers. The interface between feed and extractant is stabilized by filling the pores in the hollow-fiber walls with a cross-linked polyvinylalcohol gel which offers negligible resistance to mass transfer. The extraction with dodecyl-l-hydroxyproline deliberately imitates earlier studies, facilitating comparisons of hollow-fiber extraction with other techniques. The results show that the isomer yield per equipment volume of racemic separation is 100 times greater than that in a continuously rotating extractor, and 1,000 times greater than that in a conventional packed tower.

    Notes: Summary The validity of Golay's assumption of a thin film in his theoretical development of capillary chromatography is evaluated by comparing it to Ari's theory which takes into account film curvature. The two solutions are compared using previously published capillary gas chromatography data. The results show that deviations between the theories are insignificant at conventional aspect ratios of 3 %, but can be important at 10 %.
