Notes: We studied 3 contact sensitizers present in rubber products, ethylbutyl thiourea (EBT), 2-mercapto-benzothiazole (MBT) and 2,2-dithio-bis-benzothiazole (MBTS), to relate the amount orsensitizer eliciting allergic contact dermatitis to the quantity leaching from a product into various biological fluids: normal saline, human plasma and 3 synthetic sweat solutions of pH 5.5 to 7.5. To determine the amount of sensitizer remaining after leaching, Soxhlet extraction with acetonitrile was subsequently performed. High-performance liquid chromatography was used for chemical analysis. 12 MBT-sensitive patients were patch tested with serial dilutions of MBT and MBTS in petrolatum. A Latin Square design was used in statistical analysis of variance of the patch test results. Large amounts of thioureas leached from 2 rubber articles eliciting thiourea dermatitis, the literature suggesting that these would have been well above the elicitation threshold. Leaching of MBTS was relatively greater than MBT into most media, whereas MBT was a more potent elicitor than MBTS at equivalent concentrations. The lowest eliciting concentration of MBT in 1 subject was 0.01%. Such information should prove helpful to manufacturers in designed products that do not release allergens sufficiently to cause reactions in consumers.

Notes: The increased supply of photosynthate from maternal tissue is known to promote grain growth in several crop species. However, the effect of increasing photosynthate supply on grain growth receives little attention in rice. This study was aimed at evaluating the effect of increasing photosynthate supply through CO2 enrichment (650 μl I-1) on grain growth in three rice cultivars differing in grain size. CO2 enrichment was applied to the pot-grown plants between anthesis and final harvest. The results indicated that high CO2 treatment enhanced the CO2 exchange rate of leaf tissue, and subsequently increased the sucrose level of peduncle exudate, but it did not promote starch accumulation in the developing grains. This phenomenon was linked to the poor CO2 responses for the grain activities of sucrose synthase, UDP-glucose pyrophosphorylase. ADP-glucose pyrophosphorylase, and starch synthases involved in the conversion of sucrose to starch. Significant cultivar differences also existed for the activities of sucrose to starch conversion enzymes with larger grain size cultivars tending to have higher enzymes activities (expressed on a grain basis), resulting in a greater carbohydrate accumulation.

Notes: Abstract Venous blood samples were collected from 16 Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse mares during late pregnancy (approximately one month before parturition), approximately 6 h after parturition, one month after parturition and 4 months after parturition when the foals were weaned. There were no significant differences over time for haematocrit, mean cell volume, mean cell haemoglobin concentration, platelet count or mean platelet volume. The icterus index was significantly higher, and the total plasma protein concentration was slightly lower, during late pregnancy than when nursing. Plasma fibrinogen concentration and total leucocyte counts were highest shortly after birth. Results from differential leucocyte counts revealed that the increased total leucocyte count measured shortly after birth was the result of increased numbers of neutrophils. There were no significant differences in absolute lymphocyte, monocyte or basophil counts, but the number of eosinophils was significantly lower shortly after birth. Total serum iron concentration and percentage saturation of transferrin with iron were highest shortly after birth. There was no significant difference in iron binding capacity over time. Serum ferritin and cortisol concentrations were lowest during late pregnancy, but the mean ferritin value was not significantly different from other time periods. The addition of iron and other mineral supplements to the basic concentrate fed at the University of Florida Horse Research Unit did not have a measurable effect on any haematological parameter evaluated in mares.

Notes: Abstract The problem of finding an AND/OR precedence-constraint assembly schedule using optimization neural computation is presented. The precedence relationships of assembly operation result from the geometric constraints of subtasks. Because of the existence of geometric constraints among assembly subtasks, the assembly operation involves AND/OR precedence relationships; that is, the order of assembly crucially determines whether the desired task can be achieved. A feasible assembly schedule is a schedule that satisfies these AND/OR precedence constraints. It has been shown that all the feasible assembly schedules can be generated by transforming geometric constraints of subtasks to the pattern-matching operation. Using the question-answer pattern and pattern-matching operation, the assembly scheduling problem can be transformed into an AND/OR precedence-constrained traveling salesman problem (TSP). Two precedence-constrained TSPs, cost-constrained TSP (CCTSP) and state-constrained TSP (SCTSP), are discussed. The CCTSP artificially sets the cost of the prohibited moves to a very large value which ensures that the constraints are satisfied, while the SCTSP restricts the movement of next assembly subtasks. The advantage of the SCTSP over CCTSP in the generation of the assembly schedule will be illustrated. A novel method proposed here is to obtain the best AND/OR precedence-constraint assembly schedule using neural network computation. The geometric constraints of an assembled object are transformed into the elements of the connection matrix which specifies the connection strength among neurons. A modified Hopfield network is used to tackle the AND/OR precedence-constraints assembly scheduling problem. Multirobot assembly sequences generation is also discussed. The designed algorithm can accommodate various constraints and applications. Detailed algorithms, examples and experiments are presented.
