Notes: The expression of tetranectin in colonic neoplasia was evaluated by determining the tissue distribution by immunohistological analysis of tissue sections and the antigen levels in tissue homogenates and plasma. In normal colonic mucosa tetranectin staining was predominantly found in the goblet cells whereas in adenocarcinomas this staining was confined to the tumour stroma. Colonic adenomas, benign precursors of adenocarcinomas, showed fewer tetranectin positive goblet cells and in some cases showed tetranectin expression in the stroma. Within the tissue homogenates no differences were found in the tetranectin levels between normal mucosa, adenomas and carcinomas. Patients with colonic cancer were found to have significantly decreased plasma tetranectin levels compared to healthy controls. Thus, colonic neoplasia is associated with a change in the tissue distribution of tetranectin, without an obvious change in the tissue level, and a low plasma tetranectin level.

Notes: Surface electromyograms from the right and left masseter and anterior temporalis muscles were used to detect peripheral correlates of deprogramming, also known as programming and reprogramming, of jaw elevator muscles. Putative deprogramming was attempted through the clinically recommended use of a leaf gauge, placed for 15 min between the maxillary and mandibular anterior teeth and disoccluding the posterior teeth by about 2 mm. Studied contractile activities were those of postural activity (subconscious, semi-isometric, minimal activity) and intercuspal teeth clenching (conscious, isometric, maximal activity). Use of the leaf gauge did not affect normalized postural activity (about 4%), the duration (about 900 ms) and static work efforts of clenching (about 1200 μV.s), the time to peak mean voltage of clenching (about 400 ms), and the peak mean voltage of clenching (about 300 μV). Activity and asymmetry indices showed that the studied motor innervation patterns were not changed by the leaf gauge.

Notes: Maximum voluntary teeth clenching was performed for about 1 s to study the interactions between subjective sensory-motor events and changes in the time and frequency domains of surface electromyograms of the masseter and anterior temporalis muscle. Isometric jaw muscle contractions were examined for their speeds of contraction, the total energy content and median frequency of their power density spectra, and for the specific rate of change and the efficiency of their voluntary and involuntary activation efforts. The observations suggested that, in general, brief maximum isometric contractions were not preprogrammed, but rather were regulated by a subconscious proprioceptive feedback mechanism; the mechanism, possibly a transcortical loop, appeared to have a low gain and to be based on recruitment/decruitment of motor units.

Notes: In clinical dentistry, the sounds (clicking) and noises (grating) produced by the temporomandibular joints (TMJ) usually signify dysfunction or disease of the mandibular locomotor system. In an attempt to provide guidance to the general practitioner, this article discusses some pertinent parameters defining the physics of airborne and solidborne vibrations.

Notes: To determine the relative contribution of the masseter and anterior temporalis muscles to global isometric bite force, activity indices were constructed on the basis of the peak mean voltage (μV) and the integrated voltage (μV.s) of bipolar surface electromyograms obtained during brief maximum voluntary teeth clenching (MVC). The index that was based on integrated myoelectrical activity showed that the masseter muscle contributed the major part of the isometric MVC force. The index that was based on instantaneous peak myoelectrical activity also showed that activity in the masseter muscle predominated over that in the anterior temporalis muscle. In addition, the latter index showed a negative linear association with the initial (0–50% MVC) isometric contraction velocities of the masseter and anterior temporalis muscles. Both indices appear to be promising clinical diagnostic tools.

Notes: Stimulus-response latencies of low-frequency transcutaneous electrical neuromuscular stimulation (TENS) were studied in 15 healthy subjects, applying the two different pulse configurations delivered by the Biotens and the Myomonitor instruments. Latencies, in milliseconds, were determined on bipolar raw surface electromyograms (EMG) of the suprahyoid muscles, using the skin surface over the sigmoid notches of the mandible as the site of stimulation. Stimulus-response times were measured from the onset of the stimulus artefact to the first response peak on EMG, and their mean values showed ranges of 3.79–4.49 ms for Biotens and 5.10–5.34 ms for Myomonitor. It was concluded that low-frequency TENS caused direct stimulation of motor nerves, and that the timing of the contraction response was not affected by altered electrode placement, lead-wire reversal or unbalanced (right/left) stimulation.

Notes: An improved and reliable method for making sharp scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) tips is described. It is based on the widely used drop-off electrochemical etching procedure, here modified to improve the control of the tip shape. A second etching is applied not only to remove the oxide layer from the tip surface, but also to sharpen the STM tips further. A tip radius less than 20 nm can be obtained reproducibly. The quality of the produced tips was inspected with transmission electron microscopy, and micrographs of tips produced with different times of second etching are shown. To produce tips which are all without an oxide layer an electronic phase control unit is necessary. Even without this etch controller more than half the tips are oxide free, and then only standard laboratory equipment is used for the tip production.

Notes: Gastrointestinal pH in 11 healthy subjects with ileostomy was determined with a pH-sensitive, radiotransmitting capsule. Median pH was 7.0 in duodenum, dropped to pH 6.3 in the proximal part, but rose to 7.3 in the distal part of the small intestine. In five subjects the pH of the ileostomy effluents was determined with the pH capsule as well as with a pH meter. Median pH was 7.2 measured with the capsule and 7.4 with the pH meter. The difference between the results obtained with the two methods ranged from 0.1 to 0.3 pH units. The median gastrointestinal transit time of the capsule was 10.5 h (range 6.2–12.8 h). Gastric residence time was 0.6 h (range 0.2–3.8 h), and small intestinal transit time was 10.3 h (range 5.6–11.9 h). Thus the small intestinal transit time in ileostomates is slightly increased compared with values reported from studies on subjects with intact gut. However, no statistically significant correlation was found between the small intestinal transit time and the time elapsed after the creation of the ileostomy. We conclude that colectomy does not alter small intestinal pH but seems to increase the small intestinal transit time of single units.
