AlCl was detected and characterized with 1+2, 2+1, 2+2, 3+1, and 3+2 resonance-enhanced multiphoton ionization spectroscopy using laser light between 332 and 570 nm. AlCl was generated in the gas phase with high temperature reaction of Al with InCl3, or by the reaction of Al with AgCl. New states residing between 52 000 and 66 000 cm−1 were identified. Vibrational intervals of the new Rydberg states are about 20% greater than those of AlCl (X 1Σ+), with most lying between 565–595 cm−1.
