    Notes: Regeneration and changes in land use in London's Docklands have resulted in new water quality requirements. Areas previously occupied by docks now form part of redevelopment projects which have made a feature of the water.The paper describes a project to provide water that is aesthetically pleasing and of a quality suitable for water contact recreational activities.An extensive programme of water sampling and analysis was carried out to gain an understanding of the processes affecting water quality, including the monitoring of algal growth. The river is the main source of nutrients in the docks, which results in large concentrations of algal biomass and bacterial contamination. The principal strategy is to limit light via artificial mixing systems supplemented by limiting the inflow of nutrients from the river.The results from the water sampling programme have been used to build a 3D computer model with a supporting graphic information system to attain (a) qualitative evaluations of management and development options, and (b) short-term predictions of changes in water quality.

    Notes: The collisional heating rate of a fully ionized plasma driven by a strong electromagnetic pump wave is re-examined both analytically and with two-dimensional particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations. The high frequency conductivity model of Dawson and Oberman [J. Dawson and C. Oberman, Phys. Fluids 5, 517(1962)] is extended for the case in which the quiver velocity vo=eE/mωo is much larger than the thermal velocity vth and its equivalence to the results of Silin [V. P. Silin, Sov. Phys. JETP 20, 1510 (1965)] is shown. The Dawson and Oberman model is reduced to two-dimensions for comparison with the PIC simulations. Excellent agreement between the theory and the simulations for vo/vth≤1 is obtained. However, when vo/vth(very-much-greater-than)1 and the excursion amplitude xo=eE/mω2o is larger than the Debye length λD, the simulations show enhancements in the collision frequency from the theory. A possible mechanism for this enhancement is provided. © 1994 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The modulational instability and collapse of waves in the vicinity of the lower-hybrid resonance including both magnetosonic and lower-hybrid waves are investigated by analytical and numerical methods. The mechanism leading to the modulational instability is the nonlinear coupling of lower-hybrid waves with the much lower-frequency quasineutral density perturbations via the ponderomotive force. The result is a filamentation of the high-frequency field producing elongated, cigar-shaped nonlinear wave packets aligned along the magnetic field with the plasma expelled outside (cavities). The analytical self-similar solutions describing cavity collapse are obtained and compared with the results of numerical simulation for both two- and three-dimensional cavity geometries. It is shown that in three-dimensional solutions the transverse, with respect to the magnetic field, contraction remains prevailing. The possibility of ion acceleration as the result of the lower-hybrid collapse is discussed and detailed comparison is made with the observations of the phenomena in the auroral ionosphere.

    Notes: In the sheath regions strong electric fields can develop that accelerate ions to sufficient energy to cause sputtering and increase the plasma impurities to an intolerable level. Simulations of these sheaths are performed with a one-and-two-half-dimensional (y,vx,vy,vz) electrostatic particle model with a homogeneous magnetic field tilted in relation to y; guiding-center electrons and full dynamic ions are used. The plasma is taken to be bounded by metallic walls in which a time-dependent potential difference V(t) is applied and the average energies and flux of ions hitting the walls are computed. The results show that the magnetic fields inhibits the sputtering caused by D atoms. Comparisons of the present model with previous work, which used a Vlasov model and fluid approach, are also made with good agreement in the appropriate regime.

    Notes: A unified small-signal amplification theory is developed to compare growth mechanisms responsible for a number of relativistic radiation generators. The theory is formulated from the basis that the electron resonance frequency produced by the external fields of the devices depends on γ−q, where γ is the beam Lorentz factor and q is a constant (q=1 for cyclotron masers, q=1/2 for ion-channel lasers, and q=0 for free electron lasers). It is concluded that for wave amplification, the sign of the electron mismatch frequency is required to be the same as the sign of bunching parameter that is determined by the total bunching both axial and azimuthal; this depends on the q value. The two bunching mechanisms exist, not only in the single electron resonance regime, but also in the collective gain regime. Competition or reinforcement between the two bunching mechanisms is determined by the q value, the electron axial velocity, and the wave phase velocity.

    Notes: The plasma physics associated with intense electron and positron beams in high-energy colliders is discussed. The focusing and plasma oscillation of these beams are studied in the presence of an externally supplied plasma (a plasma lens) and in the self-consistent fields of the interpenetrating beams. A plasma lens can provide strong focusing of a beam by shielding the beam's radial space-charge electric field and allowing it to self-pinch in its self-generated azimuthal magnetic field. The focusing force of a plasma lens can be equivalent to quadrupole magnet strengths of the order of hundreds of MG/cm. Theoretical and computational work characterizing the aberrations and final spot sizes possible with plasma lenses is presented. Furthermore, when the e+ and e− beams overlap at the interaction point (i.e., collide), they behave (temporarily) as a two-component plasma. The self-pinching or disruption of one beam by another in the e+e− plasma is modeled analytically and with two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations.
