Notes: We present here a dynamical study of Fe particles ((open circle)(Slashthrough accent mark)∼50 A(ring)) dispersed in an alumina matrix, performed by inelastic neutron scattering, in zero applied field. The line shape of the energy spectrum, quasielastic or inelastic, allows us to define three temperature ranges, attributed to three distinct regimes for the transverse fluctuations. At high temperature, the line shape is quasielastic with a nearly temperature independent energy linewidth. At intermediate temperature, one observes the expected precession mode with an inelastic line shape. At low temperature, a "reentrant'' behavior occurs, which locates the disappearance of the precession mode, likely due to the effect of interparticle coupling.

Notes: We made magneto-optical measurements (Faraday Rotation) on four different films with an approximate thickness of 0.5 μm obtained by cosputtering. The films are composed by Fe particles, with different average diameter in the range 50〈Φ〈100 A(ring), dispersed in amorphous Al2O3. At the surface of each particle the presence of Fe2+ and a smaller quantity of Fe3+ ions were previously detected. Fe3+ ions were also found in large quantities at the surface of the whole sample. Our measurements are able to distinguish signals coming from the two different ions. We followed these signals by varying the temperature down to 4 K. We observed that the magneto-optical response of Fe3+ ions remains constant, while that of Fe2+ increases with decreasing temperature (T) for T above a characteristic temperature Tc. Below Tc the Fe2+ response remains constant. Measured Tc values were 23, 29, 36, and 250 K for the four samples containing 45, 55, 60, and 70–85 wt. % iron, respectively. These results are comparable with those obtained by other techniques (Mössbauer and susceptibility). We conclude that the blocking process concerns only the magnetic moments of the particles located in the bulk of the film.

Notes: We made measurements of polar Kerr rotation (KR) on granular thin films, composed of iron particles, with different average diameter (50〈Φ〈100 A(ring)), dispersed in an amorphous Al2O3 matrix. The measurements were performed at 300 and 4 K in the wavelength interval 0.5–2.5 μm. The spectra observed show a decreasing tail in the visible region and then oscillations in the near infrared due to composition of the light beams reflected by the two surfaces of the sample. Values as high as 2.8° of KR in the visible are obtained when a magnetic field of 4 KOe is applied perpendicular to the surface of the sample. The KR signal was also measured as a function of the temperature at the specific values of wavelength corresponding to some maxima and minima of the spectrum. The KR intensity increases as the temperature decreases down to a characteristic temperature T*1, below which it remains constant. T*1 increases with increasing iron concentration and particle dimensions. This behavior is in agreement with previous results of Faraday rotation and susceptibility measurements.

Notes: Abstract The ferrite spinels ZnxMg1−xFe2O4 (x≥0.8) have been studied at low temperature by high-field Mössbauer spectroscopy. When x increases, the magnetic structure, which is relevant of local canted states, evolves from a randomly canted ferrimagnetic structure towards a randomly canted antiferromagnetic order.

Notes: Abstract Mössbauer studies with and without applied field have been performed on the LiFexAl5−xO8 ferrite system for x=1.5 and 2. A canted structure is demonstrated and the features of both magnetisation under high field and Mössbauer spectroscopy are explained from transverse spin relaxation. It is suggested that coupling of this latter relaxation and spin-spin iron relaxation can explain the temperature dependence of the Mössbauer spectra.

Notes: Abstract Results from low temperature Mössbauer measurements upon several samples of dispersed small Fe particles in an alumina matrix are presented. The nature and population of the various iron species are deduced and discussed in relation to the particle mean diameters. An evaluation of the blocking temperature for one sample has been attempted.

Notes: Abstract Mössbauer spectra of amorphous Fe64Cr16B20 particles dispersed in an alumina matrix are compared to those of the corresponding amorphous ribbon. The slight variations between the hyperfine parameters of the granular samples are mainly assigned to disorders at the particle surface. The behaviour of the blocking temperatures versus frequency deduced from A.C. susceptibility measurements and Mössbauer spectroscopy is governed by particle interactions.

Notes: Abstract We report X-ray diffraction, resistivity and Mössbauer studies on several substituted 2201 Bi cuprates, Bi2Sr2Cu1−xFexOy(O≤x≤1) and Bi2Sr1.6La0.4Cu1−xFexOy and Bi1.6Pb0.4Sr1.6La0.4Cu1−xFexOy (O≤x≤0.04). The first series is not superconducting and a new phase appears for x=1. For La substituted samples, Tc increases up to 35K and decreases strongly with x. All Mössbauer spectra were fitted well with four quadrupole doublets, with relative population depending on samples.

Notes: Abstract In-field Mössbauer studies have been performed on the Li0.5(1+t)Fe2.5−1.5t ,Ti t ,O4 system with 1.10 ≤t≤ 1.40. The disordered magnetic properties depend strongly on the chemical disorder and local order induced by thermal treatments. The results are in agreement with low- and high-field magnetization measurements. Locally canted states are observed, with the degree of magnetic disorder depending on the composition and (or) the local chemical disorder.

Notes: Abstract The different kinds of magnetic phases arising in insulating systems are described and discussed. Attention is focussed on semi-disordered phases which retain partially long range order as reentrant properties and local canted states, and disordered phases without long range order as spin glasses and spin cluster states. The properties of some systems are described, choosen among those where Mössbauer spectroscopy has been performed, mainly spinels, glasses, fluorides, Eu-based compounds. Some unsolved problems are shortly pointed out.
