Notes: Abstract A mini transmissionγ-ray Compton polarimeter was developed for the measurement of the sign of magnetic moments of radioactive nuclei with low-temperature nuclear orientation. The signs of the magnetic moments of the following isotopes were determined:193Os [μ=+0.7297(16)μ N];191m Ir [μ=+6.20(9)μ N];192Ir [μ=+1.924(10)μ N];194Ir [μ=+0.39(1)μ N];195m Pt [μ=−0.605(15)μ N].

Notes: Abstract The dispersion relation for the coherent propagation of a hole moving in a two-dimensional quantum antiferromagnet is discussed. The system is described by two model Hamiltonians, thet-J model and thet-t′-J model, which have been used frequently to discuss strong electron-correlation effects present in high-T c superconductors. The calculations are based on the introduction of a new wave function which is constructed by use of equations derived by Shraiman and Siggia. The different mechanisms for the coherent propagation, which are due to the spin fluctuation and the hopping terms of the Hamiltonian, are treated on the same footing. As a result of the inclusion of an effective hopping mechanism along spiral paths-first discussed by Trugman-the minimum of the band is somewhat changed compared to results recently obtained in the literature. For large values of the ratiot/J an inversion of the whole dispersion relation occurs. The overall shapes of the dispersion within both models are found to agree quite well, though for small values oft/J the bandwidth within thet-J model becomes significantly smaller than that of thet-t′-J model.

Notes: Abstract The dispersion relation for the coherent propagation of a hole moving in a two-dimensional (CuO2) N system is discussed. The (CuO2)N planes constitute the most important structural element in the high-T c superconducting materials. The system is described by the Kondo-Heisenberg Hamiltonian, which is a simplified version of the extended Hubbard or Emery model. The calculations are based on the introduction of a trial wave function in the unitary space of the Cu spins and the O degrees of freedom. They generalize an approach recently proposed for the coherent motion of a hole in thet-J model. The propagation is mainly determined by the spin-fluctuation part of the superexchange between the copper spins. Minor contributions to the coherent hole motion are due to an effective tunneling of the hole to second and third nearest neighbors along spiral paths in the (CuO2) N plane. This mechanism can be considered as the analogue of a mechanism for coherent hole motion in thet-J model first discussed by Trugman. For the dispersion relation a cosine-band-like form is found similar to that for thet-J model. The band width, however, is somewhat increased. Except for this difference, our results seem to support the point of view of Zhang and Rice, who have claimed that there exists a one-to-one mapping between the low-lying states of the two-band model and the effectivet-J model.

Notes: Abstract The β+/EC decay of the neutron deficient nuclei76,78Sr and79Y was studied employing mass separated molecular beams of SrF+ and YF2 + from the ISOLDE mass separator. The halflives of76,78Sr and79Y were measured as t1/2=8.9(3)s, 159(8)s and 14.4(15)s, respectively, and decay schemes were established for76Sr and79Y. In the78Sr decay 10 new γ-ray transitions were identified.

Notes: Abstract This paper presents off-line and on-line orientation results obtained with the new on line nuclear orientation device NICOLE in CERN. Magnetic moments of187,185Pt g and186Ir m , electric quadrupole moment ratios between Pt isotopes with mass number 185, 187 and 189, the spin of the 2 h isomer of186Ir and a new decay scheme of184Au involving a metastable state are established. The shape variation versus mass number of the Pt isotopes leads to sign change of the spectroscopic quadrupole moment between A=187 and 185.

Notes: Abstract The hyperfine field of NaFe has been measured using Low Temperature Nuclear Orientation of cold implanted24Na. The combination of both the γ-and β-anisotropies yields information on the implantation fraction of Na in Fe. Furthermore, an, upper limit for the relaxation time of Na in Fe could be deduced.

Notes: Abstract The methods of time-resolved and time-integral on-line nuclear orientation have been applied to study short lived nuclei with the NICOLE facility (Nuclear Implantation into Cold On-Line Equipment) at ISOLDE-3 in CERN using beams of182–186Hg. The half-lives in these decay chains are of the order of seconds and therefore comparable to the spin-lattice relaxation times of the nuclei in iron. As the relaxation rate depends strongly on the g-factor, g-factors of nuclei in the decay chains can be deduced from the observation of the time evolution of γ-ray anisotropy. Using this technique the existence of an isomer in184Au has been found and the g-factors of184Au,184mAu and182Au have been determined. Accurate half-lives have been extracted from the data. Time-integral nuclear orientation has been observed for short lived as well as longer lived isotopes of the Hg decay chains. From these measurements, after proper correction for incomplete relaxation, the magnetic moments of183mPt,183Ir and182Ir have been derived. The applicability of the time-resolved nuclear orientation technique for nuclei far from stability and its possible limitations is discussed.
