Notes: Summary Wastewater from a dairy plant with an average BOD5 of 1060 mg/l and an average TKN of 109 mg/l was treated aerobically using three activated sludge reactors in series. With an overall retention time of 19.8 hrs, the final effluent contained 9 mg/l of BOD5 and 10 mg/l of TKN, corresponding to respective reductions of 99% and 91%.

Notes: Summary Photos of scanning and transmission electron microscopy showed that sludge granules treating sucrose wastewater had a 20–40 μm surface layer with diverse morphology, consisting of cocci and bacilli, and a loosely packed interior, mainly consisting of Methanothrix. Light microscopy using epi-fluorescent excitation showed not only the similar microstructure, but also the distribution of various genuses of methanogens.

Notes: Summary Heavy metals in electroplating effluent inhibited specific methanogenic activity (SMA) of anaerobic starch-degrading granules. The SMA of granules on the degradation of starch were reduced by 50% when each gram of biomass was in contact individually with 105 mg of zinc, 120 mg of nickel, 180 mg of copper, 310 mg of chromium, or 〉400 mg of cadmium. Granules had higher toxicity-resistance than flocculent sludge, due to their layered structure.
