Notes: The density profiles and correlation functions are computed exactly, at the special coupling Γ=2, for the two-dimensional two-component plasma separated by an impermeable membrane of width ε from a metal wall. In a grand canonical formalism, the Hamiltonian used includes the image forces due to the metal wall. This provides a direct calculation of results obtained previously as a limiting case of the ideally polarizable interface [F. Cornu and B. Jancovici, J. Chem. Phys. 90, 2444 (1989)], and extends those results.

Notes: It is noted that the hypothesis of independent random complex elements for the off diagonal blocks (say, M2 and M3) of the transfer matrix describing conductance in a mesoscopic wire allows the eigenvalue distribution of the matrix product M3°M3 (or M2°M2) to be computed exactly. Exact expressions, in terms of double Wronskian and Toeplitz determinants, are derived for the distribution of the smallest and second smallest eigenvalue of this and similar random matrix products. © 1994 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: For various values of the parameters in the Laguerre random matrix ensemble, the distribution of the smallest eigenvalue and the scaled n-level distribution function are calculated exactly in terms of generalized hypergeometric functions. In certain cases these functions are expressed as multidimensional integrals, from which asymptotic formulas are calculated and predictions of universal behavior verified.

Notes: Abstract The two-dimensional, two-component plasma is considered in doubly periodic boundary conditions with the positive and negative charges confined to separate interlacing rectangular lattices. It is shown that at the special couplingΓ=2, on a lattice of 2M 1×2M 2 sites, the grand partition function can be written as a double integral over a product of determinants of dimension 2M 2×2M 2. On the basis of a conjecture regarding the zero distribution of the grand partition function, the large-M 2 behavior of the determinant is given and the pressure evaluated exactly.

Notes: Abstract For the two-dimensional Coulomb gas on a lattice, at the special value of the dimensionless coupling constantΓ=2, the grand partition function and correlations can be written in terms of the eigenvalues and eigenvectors of a block Toeplitz matrix. By using the semiperiodic Coulomb potential and taking the continuum limit in the periodic direction so as to have a set of parallel lines as the domain, it is shown that these eigenvalues and eigenvectors can be computed exactly. This allows the pressure and the correlations near a charged wall to be rigorously evaluated. The two-particle correlations obey a sum rule which implies that the state in the vicinity of the wall is a conductor.

Notes: Abstract The grand partition function for the two-dimensional, two-component plasma at Γ=2 is evaluated exactly in a finite system for various interfaces: a charged hard wall (the so-called primitive electrode model), a second two-component plasma of different fugacity separated by an impermeable membrane (the ideally polarizable interface), and a metal wall separated by an impermeable barrier. For each of these models the surface tension is calculated directly from the asymptotic expansion of the grand partition function.

Notes: Abstract In a previous paper the two-particle distribution function and one-particle density matrix for the quantum many-body system with the 1/r 2 pair potential have been expressed as limiting cases of Selberg correlation integrals. Recurrence equations are derived which allow rapid evaluation of these multidimensional integrals. The exact results for the two-particle distribution are compared with the harmonic approximation.

Notes: Abstract Classical Coulomb systems ind dimensions (d⩾2) with a periodic boundary condition, periodW, in the directionx (d)are considered. With the other directions of the confining volume of lengthL, it is shown that if the system is in a conducting phase, then the “strip” free energykTf W ,f W = −lim L→∞ L −(d−1) log Z, has the large-W expansion $$f_W \sim Wf_\infty + \frac{{(d/2 - 1)\Gamma (d/2 - 1)}}{{\pi ^{d/2} W^{d - 1} }}\zeta (d) + O\left( {\frac{1}{{W^{d + 1} }}} \right)$$ wherekTf ∞ is the bulk free energy per unit volume, ζ(x) denotes the Riemann zeta function, andΓ(x) denotes the gamma function. With 1/W identified askT, this result is precisely the low-temperature behavior of the free energy of a (d−1)-dimensional Debye solid. This fact is explained in terms of an equivalence between the Coulomb gas and quantum fields. Also, the expansion is verified for some exactly solved models of Coulomb systems in two dimensions.

Notes: Abstract The asymptotic forms of the average distance of the closest particle to a fixed positive charge, and of the closest particle to the origin, are obtained for the two-dimensional two-component plasma in the low-density limit. The asymptotic forms of the average areas of the corresponding disks formed by the closest particle are also derived. These results are verified at a special coupling where exact results are available.

Notes: Abstract At the special value of the reduced inverse temperatureΓ=2, the equilibrium statistical mechanics of a two-dimensional Coulomb gas confined to the surface of a sphere is an exactly solvable problem, just as it was for the Coulomb gas in a plane. The thermodynamic quantities and all the correlation functions can be calculated. Use is made of an isomorphism between the classical Coulomb gas and the free Fermi field theory associated with the Dirac operator on the sphere.
