    Notes: We have measured the conversion efficiency, as well as the spectral and temporal x-ray output of H- and He-like carbon line emission, from a thin foil of polypropylene that has been irradiated with subpicosecond KrF laser pulses. The effect of amplified spontaneous emission prepulse on the x-ray conversion process, as well as the application of these x-ray "flashlamps'' toward pumping soft x-ray lasers, is discussed.

    Notes: The conversion efficiency into kilovolt line radiation for 248-nm light at 1017 W/cm2 on an aluminum target is measured. The x-ray yield is found to increase with the scale length of the target plasma. The interaction is modeled as resonance absorption, and the plasma scale length is determined from the prelase energy and irradiance.

    Notes: An x-ray streak camera is used to diagnose a laser-produced Al plasma with time resolution of ∼10 ps. A streak record of filtered emission and a time-integrated transmission grating spectrum reveal that the plasma radiation is dominated by emission from He- and H-like resonance lines.

    Notes: We have studied the interaction of 290-fs, 308-nm laser pulses with aluminum targets at irradiances exceeding 5×1018 W/cm2. The x-ray spectrum is dominated by the H- and He-like lines from aluminum, with the brightest lines radiating 0.8% of the incident laser light energy. This fraction is close to that measured at 50 times less irradiance, but occurs at a slightly higher ionization stage. The x rays are emitted from a region of subcritical electron density at 3–6×1021 W cm−3. The radiance of the 1.73-keV Lα line is measured to be 4×1012 W/cm2/sr.

    Notes: Abstract Bacterial cell envelope preparations from eight untypable strains ofPasteurella haemolytica were compared by sodium dodecyl sulphate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and immunoblotting with rabbit antisera prepared against the eight untypable strains (one untypable strain per rabbit) and with cattle antisera prepared againstP. haemolytica serotypes 1, 2, 5, 6, 9 and against one heterologous untypable strain. Numerous comigrating and shared antigens were recognized by the eight rabbit antisera and theP. haemolytica serotype cattle antisera. Comigrating antigens at 43 and 30 kilodaltons (kDa) were recognized by all eight rabbit antisera. Shared antigens, detected by all eight rabbit antisera when reacting againstP. haemolytica serotype 1, were recognized at 43, 32, 30, 20 and 15 kDa.

    Notes: Summary The precipitation structure of mature Mesoscale Convective Systems (MCS) is examined in both the midlatitudes and the tropics using SSM/I microwave measurements, geostationary satellite observations, and ground-based radar observations. Discussion includes qualitative comparisons between midlatitude and tropical MCS cases, with particular emphasis on the delineation of convective and stratiform regions and the characterization of microwave polarization difference temperatures in the MCSs. Implications are given regarding the importance of the vertical precipitation structure on top of the atmosphere (TOA) microwave temperatures and for rain retrieval algorithms using measurements from space. Some of the principle findings include the ability of passive microwave brightness temperature measurements to distinguish stratiform and convective regions of MCSs for both tropical and midlatitude cases and over land and ocean backgrounds. Convective regions typically had low differences between the vertical and horizontal brightness temperatures while the stratiform regions have larger differences, and these differences are likely related to the spatial microphysical variations in the upper levels of the precipitation region. Several cases were found in midlatitudes and one case in the tropics where the lowest infrared (IR) brightness temperatures were displaced into the anvil region and were not colocated with the coldest microwave temperatures. Life cycle dependence of the displacement is suggested, but the SSM/I measurements with a maximum of twice daily coverage over the same location were inadequate to answer this question.

    Notes: Abstract Information integration is vital for keeping manufacturing operations competitive. A case study approach has been adopted to better understand the role of informatio in integrated manufacturing. Information is now considered a corporate asset. The creation, processing, movement and security of information is therefore as important as the products/services of an enterprise. The case studies have helped in identifying the requirements and issues involved in developing an information system and supporting software framework for a manufacturing enterprise. This paper deseribes a case study dealing with the integrated manufacture of optical fiber products. A phased development and implementation approach was adopted where a small, manageable slice of the system is considered for the case study followed by functional modeling (IDEFO) and data flow modeling (data flow diagrams). This identifies the pieces of information of interest. The information relationships are modeled using extended entity relationship (EER) diagrams which are then mapped to a relational model. The relational tables thus obtained were implemented on a commercial Database Management System (DBMS). The functional constraints and application interfaces were then built using Structured Query Languages (SQL) and commercial application interface tools. Subsequent sections describe the functional models, data flow diagrams (DFDs), EER diagrams, relational database design and user/application interfaces developed for the system. Implementation experiences and observations are discussed along with the applications of the implemented system. The case study has helped in developing a preliminary data model (i.e., a model about data by which a reasonable interpretation of the data can be obtained) for material handling (MH) functions.

    Notes: Abstract The solubility of CaSO3·1/2H2O(c) was studied under alkaline conditions (pH〉8.2), in deaerated and deoxygenated Na2SO3 solutions ranging in concentration from 0.0002 to 0.4M and in CaCl2 solutions ranging in concentration from 0.0002 to 0.01M, for equilibration periods ranging from 1 to 7 days. Equilibrium was approached from both the over- and the under-saturation directions. In all cases, equilibrium was reached in 〈1 days. The aqueous Ca2+−SO 3 2− ion interactions can be satisfactorily modeled using either ion-association or ion-interaction aqueous thermodynamic models. In the ion-association model, the log K°=2.62±0.07 for Ca2++SO 3 2− ⇆CaSO 3 0 . In the Pitzer ion-interaction model, the binary parameters β(0) and β(1) for Ca2+−SO 4 2− were used, and the value of β(2) was determined from the experimental data. As expected given the strong association constant, the value of β(0) was quite small (about −134). We feel a combination of the two models is most useful. The logarithm of the thermodynamic equilibrium constant (K°) of the CaSO3·1/2H2O(c) solubility reaction (CaSO3·1/2H2O(c)⇆Ca2++SO 3 2+ +0.5H2O) was found to be −6.64±0.07.
