    Notes: Abstract The stability of silver halide fibers in artificial sea water (ASW) with and without a protective polymer coating and the influence of high salt concentrations on the sensor response was investigated. In contrast to bare silver halide fibers, the polymer coated fibers remain stable in contact with chloride solutions. This enables the application of a recently presented mid-IR fiber evanescent wave spectroscopy (FEWS) sensor system for the quantitative detection of chlorinated hydrocarbons (CHC) also in sea water.

    Notes: Abstract The cross sections for Bhabha and Møller scattering have been investigated in the energy range 2.1–2.4 MeV using monoenergetic positrons and electrons to search for hypothetical resonances superimposed to the continuum predicted by quantum electro dynamics. Bhabba-to-Mott, Møller-to-Mott and Møller-to-Bhabha cross section ratios were measured. The Bhabha-to-Mott ratios could be determined with statistical errors of typically 1% and remaining systematic errors not exceeding the statistical ones. No resonances in Bhabha scattering were observed. Limits for the intrinsic widths of hypothetical resonances are given. For the first time upper limits are deduced from our data for hypothetical resonances in the Møller scattering cross section in the MeV range. Additionally, Møller-to-Bhabha cross section ratios could be determined with good precision. A good agreement between the experimental and theoretical Møller-to-Bhabha ratios can be stated calling in question the recently predicted existence of series of narrow, unresolvable resonances in the Bhabha scattering cross section.

    Notes: Summary A flow injection method for the determination of formaldehyde was developed. It is based on its reaction with 3-methyl-2-benzthiazolinone hydrazone (MBTH) to yield a blue formazan anion. Typically 180 μl samples are injected into a buffered carrier stream with a frequency of 30 per hour. This sample line merges with the reagent stream containing MBTH, whereupon an azine is formed. After merging with a second stream containing an acidic solution of FeCl3 as reagent, MBTH is oxidized to an intermediate that attacks the azine yielding the formazan dye with an ɛmax at 635 nm. The method was applied to formaldehyde concentrations in the range from 0.15 mg/l to 15 mg/l. The relative standard deviation was 2.3% for 3 mg/l formaldehyde, and 5.1% for 0.3 mg/l, respectively. Strong reducing agents like nitrite interfere seriously. Out of the family of carbonyl compounds only acetaldehyde and propionaldehyde cause strong positive interference.

    Notes: Abstract Chlorinated hydrocarbons (CHCs) were monitored using a recently presented infrared fiber-optic physico-chemical sensor consisting of an MIR transparent, polymer coated, silver halide fiber coupled to a commercial FTIR spectrometer. The aim of this study was to test the performance of this new fiber optic sensing device with respect to temperature dependence, simultaneous detection of several CHCs, sensitivity and dynamic response behavior. In addition the diffusion process of the CHCs into the polymer was analyzed in order to better understand and evaluate the obtained results. During the investigation of the temperature dependence of the sensor response to real trend could be observed in the temperature range of 0 to 22°C. The dynamic response of the sensor is in the minute range when experiencing an increase in concentration of the analyte while with a decrease in concentration, the response is relatively slow. The sensor enabled the detection of 10 environmentally relevant CHCs at concentrations of 1 to 50ppm. The simulation of the experimental diffusion data revealed Fick's 1st law diffusion for CHCs into the polymer layers. Finally the sensing device was validated with head space-gas chromatography (HSGC) analyses and showed good agreement with these already established methods. This work shows the great potential of IR fiber optic sensors as early warning systems for a variety of CHCs in water (“threshold alarm sensor”)
