    Notes: Summary The clinical syndrome of unstable angina includes patients with the first onset of angina, change in a previous stable pattern or the development of chest pain at rest. Administration of intravenous nitroglycerin is established therapy in unstable angina. Buccal nitroglycerin has been introduced as an alternative means of administering nitroglycerin, which provides relief of anginal pain within 2 to 3 min and a sustained effect for 3 to 5 h. Twenty-nine patients admitted to the coronary care unit due to unstable angina were randomized to receive treatment with nitroglycerin i.v. for 24 h or buccal nitroglycerin every 4 h. Therapy was titrated according to haemodynamic effects. The mean dose of buccal nitroglycerin was 4.42 mg versus 0.45 ug·kg−1·min−1 in the intravenous group. The efficacy of treatment was similar in the two groups. Buccal nitroglycerin appeared to cause fewer adverse effects, especially less haemodynamic intolerance and headache, although the differences were not significant. Repeated administration of buccal nitroglycerin appears to be a safe and well tolerated alternative to high-dose i.v. nitroglycerin treatment in unstable angina pectoris.

    Notes: We report visible light emission from diodes made from poly(3-octylthiophene). Use of a soluble derivative of polythiophene allows fabrication of the light emitting diodes by casting the polymer film from solution with no subsequent processing or heat treatment required. The devices emit dim red-orange light with relatively low external quantum efficiencies, below 2.5×10−5 photons per electron at room temperature. Electrical characterization reveals diode behavior with rectification ratios greater than 102. The temperature dependence indicates that tunneling phenomena dominate the charge injection.

    Notes: We report electroluminescence from a regioregular alkyl-phenyl substituted polythiophene. The polymer film exists in two forms, giving widely different optical absorption, as well as photoluminescence and electroluminescence spectra. In the low-bandgap form, we observe high emission intensity centered at 1.55 eV (800 nm), well into the infrared, while the high-bandgap form gives a maximum at 1.85 eV (670 nm). The conversion from the high-bandgap form to the low-bandgap form can be done by thermal treatment of the polymer light emitting diodes.

    Notes: We report on an electroluminescent diode emitting red, green, and blue light simultaneously. The device is based on a thin polymer layer, poly[3-(4-octylphenyl)-2,2'-bithiophene] and a thick molecular layer, 2-(4-biphenylyl)-5-(4-tertbutyl-phenyl)1,3,5-oxadiazole. The quantum efficiency for light conversion is 0.3% and the turn-on voltage for light emission is 7 V. In this article we present electric and spectroscopic characterizations. A mechanism for the light emission, based on electron and hole recombination between the two organic layers, is proposed. © 1994 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Rectifying contacts between aluminum, indium, or titanium and a solution and melt processable conducting polymer, poly(3-octylthiophene) have been formed by melt processing. The contacts are formed by heating a metal/polymer/metal structure to the melting point of the polymer and then pressing the metals to the melted polymer until adhesion is achieved, whereupon the whole structure is cooled to room temperature. Comparison of the current-voltage and capacitance-voltage characteristics of a melt processed device and a device manufactured by metal sputtering shows that no significant differences exist between these structures.
