Notes: Two cases of melanocytic lesions in lymph node associated with congenital naevus are presented. The first was a 30-year-old man with a nodular melanoma arising in a small congenital naevus. The second was a 2-year-old male infant with a giant congenital naevus. In both cases, naevus cell aggregates were observed in the capsule, trabeculae, perisinusoidal areas and lymphatic vessels surrounding the nodes. In the first case, clusters of large atypical melanocytes were present amongst naevus cell aggregates in the perisinusoidal areas as well as in the lymphoid parenchyma. Between the naevus cells and large atypical melanocytes, transitional forms were observed which supports the idea that the presence of large atypical melanocytes is indicative of benign naevus cells. In the second case, marginal sinuses were packed with clusters of large melanin-rich cells. Immunohistochemically, these cells were S-100 protein negative, but ultrastructural studies proved them to be melanocytes. They were considered indicative of spread of benign naevus cells via lymphatic vessels. Arrested migration of naevus cells during embryogenesis and benign spread of naevus cells are possible explanations for the histogenesis of naevus cell aggregates in lymph nodes associated with congenital naevus.

Notes: Polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMNLs) are the most numerous cell population among the cellular infiltrates in gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) and play important roles in the host-defensive system in the gingival crevices. We determined the percentage of neutrophils, cosinophils and basophils in total PMNLs by light microscopic observation using Randolph-methylene blue staining, then assessed flow cytometric differences in the expression of CR3, FcγRIII, FcɛRII. LFA-1α, and LFA-Iβ on PMNL in GCF and peripheral blood (PB) from 21 patients with adult periodontius (AP) and 13 healthy donors. Percentages of basophils and eosinophils were higher in GCF than in PB. In both AP patients and healthy subjects, expression of CR3 and FcɛRll was higher while FeγRIII was lower in GCF than in PB. The statistical analysis showed that the expressions of FcγRIII and FcɛRII on GCF PMNLs were lower in AP patients than in healthy subjects. Expressions of LFA-1α and β on GCF were similar to those on PB PMNLs. PB PMNLs stimulated in vitro with Porphyromonas gingivalts culture supernatant and fMLP displayed an expression pattern of CR3, FcγRIII and FcɛRII on GCF PMNLs. However, C5a and IL-I failed to induce changes in FcγRIII and FcɛRII. The results indicate that GCF neutrophils are activated, present enhanced adhesion and a decreased IgG-binding ability which would reflect that they are at the terminal stage of activation, and that GCF contains a larger eosinophil fraction than in PB. Moreover, these GCF eosinophils appear to be activated.

Notes: Abstract Long-Term Potentiation (LTP) in the hippocampus has been considered to be a phenomenon closely related to learning and memory in the brain. In this paper, an integrated model of LTP is constructed based on hypotheses about both the mechanism of LTP induction and that of LTP maintenance, that is, the NMDA-receptor channel, protein phosphorylation and protein turnover. The validity of the model is discussed based on the results of computer simulations.

Notes: Abstract A nationwide survey of the susceptibility of 433 isolates ofBacteroides fragilis and 149 isolates ofBacteroides thetaiotaomicron was conducted from December 1986 through November 1989 in Japan. These strains were collected from 16 university hospitals and one metropolitan hospital. Metronidazole was the most active drug against both species, with no resistant isolates found. The activity of imipenem and sulbactam-cefoperazone was good, with very low resistance rates determined inBacteroides fragilis (1.4 % and 1.6 %, respectively) and inBacteroides thetaiotaomicron (3.4 % for both drugs), and was comparable to that of metronidazole. Cefoxitin, cefmetazole, cefotetan, cefbuperazone, latamoxef and ceftizoxime were found to be more active againstBacteroides fragilis, for which resistance rates were 3.2 to 9.5 %, than againstBacteroides thetaiotaomicron, for which resistance rates were 18.1 to 21.8 %. Rates of piperacillin resistance in the two species were 12.9 % and 26.8 %, respectively. Clindamycin was very active at a low concentration (MIC50 of 0.39 to 1.56 mg/l), but 24 % and 27.5 % ofBacteroides fragilis andBacteroides thetaiotaomicron isolates, respectively, were resistant to this agent.

Notes: Abstract Fully quantum mechanical calculations are carried out for both doubly even and doubly odd nuclei in the rare-earth region using the angular momentum projection method. We investigate the mechanisms of backbending in doubly even nuclei and signature inversion in doubly odd nuclei using a common hamiltonian for both types of nuclei and show that these two seemingly different phenomena are due to the crossing of decoupled bands. Agreement between theory and experiment is quite satisfactory.

Notes: Abstract Polymer coating of an anodized aluminum plate was carried out by anodic electrodeposition from alkali-swollen ethyl acrylate-methyl methacrylate-methacrylic acid (45/45/10, mole ratio) terpolymer emulsion with dimethyl aminoethanol. The alkali-swollen state was controlled by heating time at 60°C prior to the elctrodeposition. The similar complicated behaviors were observed in the relationships between the alkali-swollen state and the primary current density, the current density after 2 min, the quantity of electricity, and the amount of polymer deposited. The appearance of coatings changed correspondingly with such behaviors. These results indicate that the properties of the coatings are complicatedly affected by the degree of alkali-swollen state.

Notes: Abstract The chemical deposition from an anionic acrylic copolymer emulsion onto an anodized aluminum plate was carried out under various stirring conditions. The amount of polymer deposited was affected by the stirring rate. At higher stirring rates, the surface flatness of the obtained coating decreased, but the transparency (which was affected by the traces of bubbles, due to evolution of hydrogen gas from the surface of the plate in the deposition process) was improved. Under optimum stirring conditions an excellent coating having a flat surface and good transparency was obtained.

Notes: Summary A screening method for detecting volatile hydrocarbons in blood has been developed using gas chromatography/mass spectrometry with a wide-bore capillary column and a headspace method. Toluene-d8 and indan were used as the internal standards for quantitative analysis. Hydrocarbons with retention indices from 600 to 1200 were simultaneously and quantitatively detected in relatively low concentrations (0.01 μg/m1) in reconstructed ion chromatography. This method could prove useful in forensic cases in which urgent examination of complex hydrocarbon mixtures, e.g. petroleum components, is required.
