    Notes: Summary Experiments were performed to examine whether or not the area postrema (AP) is involved in the osmotic control of neurohypophysial hormone release. In control rats and in rats bearing extensive lesions of AP, extracellular action potentials were recorded from neurosecretory cells in the supraoptic nucleus (SON) and firing rates determined before and after the intraperitoneal (i.p.) injection of 1.5 M-NaCl solution. Lesion of the AP significantly (p≦0.05, Mann-Whitney's U-test) lowered firing rate of putative vasopressin (phasic) cells but not that of oxytocin (non-phasic) cells. In lesioned animals, i.p. injection of hypertonic saline, however, caused similar changes in plasma osmotic pressure, plasma oxytocin concentration and mean firing rates of both putative oxytocin and vasopressin cells to those in control rats. The results suggest that the osmotic control of SON neurosecretory cell activity in the rat can take place in the absence of the AP.

    Notes: Lactating rats show reduced oxytocin release compared with virgin female rats in response to a variety of stimuli, including stress and osmotic stimulation. We sought to establish whether this is a consequence of a reduced response in the oxytocin cells, or of a change in stimulus-secretion coupling at the level of the neurosecretory terminals in the neural lobe. Blood sampling experiments in anaesthetized rats showed that systemic administration of cholecystokinin resulted in significantly less oxytocin release in lactating rats than in virgin female rats. Electrophysiological recordings of single cells in the supraoptic nucleus, however, showed no difference in the responsiveness of oxytocin cells to this stimulus. Oxytocin release evoked by electrical stimulation or by depolarization with high potassium solutions was lower in isolated neural lobes from lactating rats than in glands from non-lactating rats, whereas evoked vasopressin release was similar in the two groups. The lactating rat neural lobes had a reduced oxytocin content: to study the consequences of depletion we compared hormone release evoked by electrical stimulation in vitro in neural lobes from normal male rats, and from male rats given 2% NaCI to drink for 2 or 4 days. Saline drinking resulted in a reduction in gland content of both oxytocin and vasopressin, and the evoked release of both hormones was also significantly reduced when expressed as a percentage of the gland content, as was also seen for oxytocin release for glands from lactating rats. Finally, measurement of the extracellular potassium response to stimulation of the isolated neural lobe as an index of the excitability of neural lobe neurosecretory axons was unchanged in lactating rats compared with virgin female rats. Together, the data indicate that reduced oxytocin release observed in lactating rats is a simple consequence of reduced oxytocin content in the neural lobe rather than of a reduced excitability of the oxytocin neurons.

    Notes: Microdialysis sampling was used to measure noradrenaline, dopamine and serotonin release in the supraoptic and paraventricular nuclei of urethane-anaesthetized rats following intravenous injection of 20μg/kg cholecystokinin. This dose of cholecystokinin stimulates oxytocin release from the posterior pituitary, while slightly inhibiting vasopressin release. Dialysis probes were placed in the paraventricular nucleus, and into dorsal or ventral regions of the supraoptic nucleus. Samples were collected at 10-min intervals in each animal before, during and after two injections of cholecystokinin, and following a control injection of 0.9% NaCI. The injections of cholecystokinin stimulated significant increases in the concentrations of noradrenaline, dopamine and serotonin in the paraventricular nucleus and of noradrenaline and serotonin in the dorsal supraoptic nucleus region. Conversely, in the ventral supraoptic nucleus region a significant reduction in noradrenaline release was observed, but dopamine and serotonin concentrations were not significantly affected. The control injections did not alter noradrenaline, dopamine or serotonin release.

    Notes: A reduced oxygen atmosphere during melt processing turned out to be critical for the fabrication of NdBa2Cu3Oy (Nd123) superconductors possessing high superconducting transition temperature (Tc) with a sharp transition and large critical current density (Jc) at 77 K. In a dc magnetization measurement, Nd123 superconductors melt processed in flowing a mixture gas of 1% O2 in Ar exhibited the Tc of about 95 K and the transition width of 1.5 K with the applied field of 10 Oe. A four-probe measurement showed the zero resistive transition Tc (R=0) of about 95 K. An anomalous peak effect in the magnetization hysteresis (M-H) loops was commonly observed and lead to large magnetic Jc of 2×104 A/cm2 at 77 K and 2 T for the applied field H parallel to the c axis of a sample (H(parallel)c). This achievement is attributable to a preferential formation of high Tc phase (x〈0.1) among the Nd1+xBa2−xCu3Oy solid solutions in a reduced oxygen atmosphere.

    Notes: The disaccharide content of the chondroitinase-digestible glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) extracted from 6–mm skin punch biopsies from the atrophic and sclerotic skin of two patients with Werner's syndrome (WS) were determined using high-performance liquid chromatography after 1–phenyl-3–methyl-5–pyrazolone labelling. The total amount of main disaccharides was significantly decreased in the atrophic lesions of WS. In the atrophic forearm skin, the decrease in the main disaccharide unit of hyaluronic acid, ΔDi-HA, and the increase in the ratio of the main disaccharide unit of dermatan sulphate, ΔDi-4S, to ΔDi-HA were significant vs. normal control (P 〈0.01 and 0.05, respectively). The sclerotic skin showed an increase in ΔDi-4S (DS) (P 〈 0.05) and a decrease in ΔDi-HA (P 〈 0.02) compared with normal controls, as well as a significantly higher ratio of ADi-4S (DS)/ΔDi-HA compared with normal controls (P 〈 0.0002) and systemic sclerosis patients (SSc; P 〈 0.02). No other statistical difference was found in the amount of each main disaccharide unit between the sclerotic skin of WS and SSc. Histological examination revealed that the atrophic skin showed thinning of the dermis with a slight increase of fine collagen bundles, whereas the sclerotic skin demonstrated a thickened dermis with prominent deposition of fine collagen bundles in the deep dermis. In SSc, thickening of the whole dermis, composed of hyalinized or swollen collagen bundles, was found. These results suggest mat alterations of disaccharide components in WS may differentiate the atrophic skin changes from the sclerotic skin changes, while the mechanisms for abnormal fibrosis remain to be elucidated.

    Notes: Summary Lignin biosynthesis via shikimate-cinnamate pathways in plants, and the biosynthetic differences of guaiacyl-and syringyl lignins between gymnosperms and angiosperms have been elucidated by tracer experiments using 14C labeled precursors and the following enzyme reactions. The formation of guaiacyl lignin but not syringyl lignin in gymnosperms was attributed to the following factors; absence of ferulate-5-hydroxylase, poor affinity of O-methyltransferase toward 5-hydroxyferulate, and lack of activation and/or reduction of sinapatc. A mechanism of lignin-carbohydrate complexes formation in wood cell walls was elucidated based on the reaction of the quinone methide of guaiacylglycerol-β-guaiacyl ether with sugars, and the analysis of DHP-polysaccharide complexes. The main cleavage mechanisms of side chains and aromatic rings of lignin model compounds and synthetic lignin (DHP) by white-rot fungi and their enzymes, lignin peroxidase and laccase have been elucidated using 2H, 13C and 18O-labeled lignin substructure dimcrs with 18O2 and H2 18O. Side chains and aromatic rings of these substrates were cleaved via aryl cation radical and phenoxy radical intermediates, in reaction mediated only by lignin peroxidase/H2O2 and laccase/O2.

    Notes: Abstract In the measurements of VLF electric fields with the Pioneer Venus spacecraft in sunlight, spin synchronized signals often dominate over the naturally generated emissions. We present a method to separate natural emissions from the several possible sources of noise. Our major objective by this method is not to remove all spin modulation, but to effectively subtract the background noise caused by the identifiable noise sources. Examination of the data shows that the background spin synchronized noise is quite sensitive to ϑ(n), the angle between the sense axis and the solar direction. We model the observed data asy(n)=w(n)t(n)f(ϑ(n))+x(n), wheref(ϑ) represents the phase response of the background noise andx(n) is the estimated natural emissions.t(n) andw(n) are the long-term trend component and time- and phase-independent component of the intensity of the background noise, respectively. The method to decomposey(n) is based on the Bayesian approach which has been recently applied to various inversion problems such as nonstationary time series modeling and image reconstruction. In this procedure, the estimated parametersw(n),t(n),f(ϑ), andx(n) can be determined automatically. We will describe the Bayesian scheme and its application to the Pioneer Venus VLF electric field data.

    Notes: Abstract The oxidation states of manganese in the La1−xMnO3−δ (x = 0.09–0.11) were investigated by electron spin resonance (ESR) and iodometry. The ESR analysis carried out at room temperature for the samples prepared in air revealed the presence of broad peaks at g = 2.0, considered to be relevant to Mn2+. It was also found that the intensity of the peak increased as lanthanum vacancy content increased. The average valence state of manganese, determined by iodometry, was approximately 3.2, and decreased by 1 as the lanthanum vacancy increased by 1. Similar trends were observed with the samples prepared at P o 2 = 1×10−7. The results indicated that Mn2+ is stably present in the La1−xMnO3−δ having an average valence number exceeding 3.0. A series of experimental results with respect to the non-stoichiometry of La1−xMnO3−δ can be explained by assuming that Mn2+ is stabilized after forming a complex with a lanthanum vacancy and two oxygen vacancies.

    Notes: Abstract Frequency domain properties of the operators to decompose a time series into the multi-components along the Akaike's Bayesian model (Akaike (1980, Bayesian Statistics, 143–165, University Press, Valencia, Spain)) are shown. In that analysis a normal disturbance-linear-stochastic regression prior model is applied to the time series. A prior distribution, characterized by a small number of hyperparameters, is specified for model parameters. The posterior distribution is a linear function (filter) of observations. Here we use frequency domain analysis or filter characteristics of several prior models parametrically as a function of the hyperparameters.
