Structural and magnetic properties of the ternary R14Fe78C8 compounds, where R=Pr, Nd, Sm, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, and Lu, were systematically investigated. By means of properly annealing treatment, the tetragonal structure isotropic to the Nd2Fe14B phase could be well formed in the above compounds. The lattice constants and Curie temperatures were determined and correspondingly compared to those obtained in borides. The magnetizations at 1.5 K and room temperature were measured. The anisotropy behaviors of R14Fe78C8 were studied in detail, and we found that there was some evident difference in both carbides and borides.
