Notes: The performance characteristics of a microwave plasma source are presented. The plasma source consists of two chambers: chamber 1 generates a high-density plasma over which a magnetic field is applied at electron cyclotron resonance condition or greater, and chamber 2 makes the plasma uniform in its lower region by surrounding the peripheral region with magnetic multipole line-cusp fields. Plasma parameters were measured with a movable Langmuir probe located 1 cm above a plasma grid which is attached at the bottom of chamber 2. The dependence of plasma parameters on the magnetic field configuration, gas pressure and microwave power were examined, and radial distributions were measured. Uniform high-density plasmas over a 9-cm-diam area were produced on the plasma grid in a suitable magnetic field configuration, and uniformity was maintained over a wide pressure range. The uniform density region was determined by the magnetic multipole fields existing in chamber 2's peripheral region. The ion beam current density evaluated from the extracted ion beam correlated well with the ion saturation current density estimated from the plasma parameters.

Notes: Extended terraces, steps along the 〈110〉 directions, and trenches between the terraces were observed on 100 nm thick NiAl films grown on GaAs by molecular beam epitaxy at 600 °C. Atomically smooth surfaces as large as 100 nm across could be obtained at this growth temperature, but at 450 °C, mounds rather than terraces were formed. We propose models for the formation of these features.

Notes: Abstract Tritium concentrations were measured for river waters on two islands in Japan. Significant difference was observed on the distribution of tritium concentrations on both islands, the river water samples from the northern island had higher concentrations and the average was about twice compared to that from the southern island. Higher tritium concentration in precipitation and the larger area of the northern island would be responsible for higher tritium concentrations in river waters.

Notes: Abstract Taking into consideration the knock-on cascade mechanism and the free volume theory, the cooling condition dependentR s (ion etching rate) is investigated for a liquid-quenched Fe-10at%Si-15at%B alloy glass. A highR s is found in a slow cooled glass.

Notes: Abstract Loss of99Tc in seaweed during dry ashing has been investigated. Two kinds of brown seaweeds labeled with99Tc were ashed for 24 or 48 h at 400, 450 and 500 °C, showing no correlation between the loss of99Tc and species, temperature and time of ashing. The averaged recovery of99Tc was 91.0±4.0%, indicating that most of the99Tc in the seaweed was retained within the matrix of the ash which was obtained under general conditions of ashing.

Notes: Summary Twenty 4-week-old Wistar rats exercised voluntarily in running wheels each day for 45 days. Fibre type composition, fibre cross-sectional area and the number of capillaries around a fibre of the slow-twitch soleus and fast-twitch plantaris muscles were examined and compared with animals which had no access to running wheels. The exercise group had a higher percentage of fast-twitch oxidative glycolytic (FOG) fibres and a lower percentage of fast-twitch glycolytic (FG) fibres in the deep portion of the plantaris muscle. The area of FOG fibres in the surface portion of the plantaris muscle was also greater in the exercise group. In the exercised animals, there was a positive relationship between the running distance and the area of FOG fibres in both the deep and surface portions of the plantaris muscle. In addition, the running distance correlated positively with the percentage of FOG fibres and negatively with that of FG fibres in the deep portion of the plantaris muscle. There were no relationships between the running distance and fibre type composition, or fibre area and capillary supply in the soleus muscle. These results suggested that the increase in the percentage and area of FOG fibres in the fast-twitch muscle was closely related to voluntary running.
