Notes: The design of a 10-T superconducting wiggler as a synchrotron radiation source for angiography has been carried out to be installed in an 800-MeV electron storage ring, TERAS, at Electrotechnical Laboratory (ETL). Synchrotron radiation generated by the wiggler has a critical photon energy of 4.47 keV and the radiation spectrum identical to that from a 2.5-GeV storage ring with a bending radius of 8.3 m. The magnet of the wiggler consists of three pairs of iron-cored superconducting coils designed to provide a peak field of 10.5 T on the beam trajectory. The effect of the wiggler on the storage ring has been investigated and a pair of quadrupole doublets on both sides of the wiggler can compensate a large deviation of the betatron tune.

Notes: Temperature dependences of the hole concentration and Hall mobility in Mg-doped GaN and Al0.08Ga0.92N grown by metalorganic vapor phase epitaxy were measured by the van der Pauw method over a wide temperature range from 100 to 500 K. Assuming that the effective mass of holes in Al0.08Ga0.92N is equal to that of GaN, the activation energy of the Mg shallow acceptor in Al0.08Ga0.92N is estimated to be about 35 meV deeper than that in GaN.

Notes: Abstract B-lymphocytes infected with Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) can proliferate in immunocompromized hosts to form lymphomas (MLs). Similar MLs are produced in mice with severe combined immune deficiency (SCID) by transfusion of human lymphocytes infected with EBV (SCID-EBV-positive BML). Mb-1 and B29 are recently found transmembrane proteins associated with membrane immunoglobulins (mIg) on the surface of B cells. Lyn is a src family gene product expressed in B cells submembranously, in association with mIg, possibly through Mb-1/B29 heterodimer. These mIg-associated proteins (Mb-1, B29 and Lyn) are known to mediate antigenic stimulation through mIgs. We noted recently that Lyn is decreased selectively in around a half of SCID-EBV-positive BMLs. We extended this line of investigation to other mIg-associated proteins. Five acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS)-MLs and ten SCID-EBV-positive BMLs were first analysed by immunohistochemistry for the expression of Mb-1, B29 and Lyn. It was found that in AIDS-MLs, all the mIg-associated proteins were heavily down-regulated. In SCID-EBV-positive BMLs, Mb-1 was down regulated in six of ten, B29 in nine of ten and Lyn in six of ten, whereas no down-regulation was noted in eight EBV-free B MLs that were also maintained in SCID mice. An additional flow-cytometric study of two SCID-EBV-positive and two EBV-negative BMLs showed similar down-regulation in the former cases exclusively. Whereas mIg was also decreased in three of five SCID-EBV positive BMLs, it did not necessarily match the decrease of mIg-associated proteins, which contrasts with the recent finding that mIgs coexist with Mb-1 or B29. Some EBV-encoded proteins may activate host molecules located downwardly; this, in turn, may lead to the suppression of these upwardly-located mIg-associated proteins.

Notes: Abstract A rapidly growing embryogenic suspension culture cell line of creeping bentgrass cv Penncross (Agrostis palustris Huds.) was established from callus derived from the culture of mature seeds. High concentrations of 2,4-D were required for the induction of callus (3 mg/1) as well as for the maintenance of the cell Une (2 mg/1) on modified B5 medium of Gamborg. Protoplasts isolated from the suspension cultures were successfully cultured in Murashige and Skoog's basal medium supplemented with only 0.1 mg/1 2,4-D. Although protoplast plating efficiency was rather low (0.36%), 30% of the protocalli formed normal green plants that were successfully established in soil.

Notes: Summary We investigated spontaneous cytokine production in two patients with pure red cell aplasia (PRCA). The peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMNC) from two patients produced IL-2. Cyclosporin A (CyA) suppressed in vitro IL-2 production in one patient, but not in the other. Spontaneous IL-2 production disappeared in one patient 10 months after the start of CyA therapy. The patient for whom CyA therapy was stopped after the disappearance of spontaneous IL-2 production has remained in continuous remission for 1 year. The present case suggests that spontaneous IL-2 production in PBMNC might be an indicator of disease activity.

Notes: Abstract A determination procedure has been developed for210Bi and210Po in environmental samples and was applied for pine needles. Bismuth-210 and210Po separated from the parent nuclide210Pb as BiOCl precipitate were extracted simultaneously by TOPO/toluene containing PPO and POPOP. The separation of210Bi and210Po from210Pb was almost satisfactory. The activity of210Bi+210Po in the TOPO/toluene was measured periodically by liquid scintillation counting for about 20 days after separation. The time course of the decreasing pattern of the activity was determined by the initial activity ratio210Po/210Bi. The decreasing pattern of the activity was compared with theoretical patterns, and best estimates for210Po and210Bi were obtained by non-linear least-squares fitting. The activities of210Bi and210Po were determined for one-year and two-year old pine needles fro the same pine tree, and weathering half-time and deposition rate of these nuclides was discussed.
