Notes: A copolymer of methyl methacrylate and azo-dye-substituted methacrylate is corona-poled. Cerenkov-type second-harmonic generation (SHG) of Nd:YAG laser is observed in the poled polymer waveguide even though there is strong absorption of the SHG wavelength. The total SHG conversion efficiency is 1.72 × 10−3%, and the net SHG conversion efficiency in the waveguide is 0.21%.

Notes: Polymer optical fiber amplifiers (POFA) of graded-index (GI) type, which have a gain in visible region, were successfully prepared by the interfacial-gel polymerization technique. The gain of 27 dB was observed at 591 nm signal wavelength with 690 W launched pump power at 532 nm in a GI POFA with 0.5 m length.

Notes: Abstract The 1β-hydroxy bile acids have been said to be fetal bile acids. These bile acids were evaluated in eight patients with congenital biliary atresia (CBA) using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. At the time of operation 1β,3α,7α,12α-tetrahydroxy-5β-cholan-24-oic acid (CA-1β-ol) and 1β,3α,7α-trihydroxy-5β-cholan-24-oic acid (CDCA-1β-ol) were 0.46 ± 34 μg/ml and 0.72 ± 0.45 μg/ml, respectively, which was significantly higher than in the control group. The percentage CA-1β-ol of total bile acids showed a tendency to decrease as age advanced. The grade of hepatic fibrosis ranged from F2 to F3 and the values and percentages of CA-1β-ol and CDCA-1β-ol were relatively higher in F2 than F3 patients. The percentage of total bile acids gradually increased in patients without sufficient bile flow but fell sharply after Kasai's procedure in the patients with sufficient bile flow. It appears that fetal bile acids are produced in the livers of CBA patients in the same way as in fetal liver, and that production continues in patients without good bile secretion even after Kasai's procedure. These results suggest that these hydroxylases are reactivated in CBA patients.

Notes: Abstract The numerical quality of the3H wave function obtained by the separable expansion method of Ernst, Shakin, and Thaler is examined. Separable approximations to the Paris potential with increasing accuracy are used in the1 S 0 and3 S 1-3 D 1 partial waves to calculate the binding energy, wave function, wave-function component percentages, and theS- andD-wave asymptotic normalization constants of3H. The results are compared with existing five-channel calculations obtained directly (without expansion) from the Paris potential to determine convergence. It is found that the results converge rapidly to the right values, indicating that the3H wave function thus obtained is of high quality and essentially indistinguishable from that obtained directly from the Paris interaction.

Notes: Abstract KNbO3-Nb2O5 glasses were prepared with molar ratio of K/(K + Nb) from 0.16 to 0.5 by using a twin-roller quenching apparatus. Most KNbO3-Nb2O5 glasses crystallized to stable phases such as KNbO3, K2Nb4O11, K3Nb7O19, KNb3O8 and K2Nb8O21 via metastable phases after heat treatment and K4Nb6O17 glass directly crystallized to K4Nb6O17 crystal. KNbO3 glass consisted of the corner-shared NbO6 octahedra, while the amounts of the edge-shared NbO6 octahedra in the KNbO3-Nb2O5 glass structure increased with decreasing K+ ion content. The band gap energies and the ionic conductivity of the KNbO3-Nb2O5 glasses increased with increasing K+ ion content, but the density and the activation energy of the ionic conduction decreased. The glasses possessed high dielectric constants appfoaching those of ferroelectric crystals at high temperature around the crystallization temperature. The dielectric constants of the glasses, however decreased greatly with decreasing temperature and with increasing frequency.

Notes: The Al-0.5 wt.% Cu-1 wt.% Si/TiW interface reaction due to thermal treatments in nitrogen was investigated using SIMS, x-ray diffraction (XRD), TEM, XPS and SEM. Titanium starts to diffuse into the Al alloy layer at low temperatures such as 350°C. However, Ti has hardly any effect on the sheet resistance. Tungsten diffuses and reacts with Al above 450°C. The rugged interfacial reaction product formed after annealing at 450°C, which may be W(Al, Si)2, does not affect the sheet resistance. The needle-shaped reaction product formed after annealing above 500°C, which is Al12 W, is responsible for the large increase in sheet resistance. An aluminium oxide layer, several nanometres thick, formed on the Al alloy surface after annealing at 500°C acts as a W diffusion barrier.
