Notes: Summary 27 cases of cranioplasty with autogenous bone grafts stored in a deep-freezer and autoclaved before use are reported. The results of follow-up for an average period of one year were satisfactory from the standpoint of brain protection and cosmetic reconstruction. A small area of absorption of grafted bone was observed in two cases on the follow-up skull roentgenograms. No serious complications were seen except in one case, whose bone flap had to be removed due to an epidural abscess. Experiments revealed that deep-freezing and autoclaving had only minimal effects on bone structure, although osteocytes degenerated. Autogenous bone flap after deep-freezing is a useful material for cranioplasty but sterilization before use is indispensable. Autoclaving is a simple method for sterilization of the flap, available in any operating theatre. It does not increase the risk of postoperative complications such as infection or absorption.

Notes: In1−xGaxSb1−yBiy (0〈x≤0.21, 0〈y≤0.005) quaternary bulk single crystals were grown on InSb seed crystals using a rotary Bridgman method. In order to investigate the quality of these crystals, various kinds of measurements were carried out, such as optical microscope, x-ray topograph, four-crystal x-ray diffractometry, electron-probe microanalysis, energy-dispersive spectroscopy, and secondary-ion-mass spectroscopy. All grown crystals were 10 mm in diameter and more than 10 mm in length. This indicates that the rotary Bridgman method was useful to grow quaternary bulk single crystals. Owing to segregation, the compositional ratio of Bi (y) increased and that of Ga (x) decreased as crystals grew. During growth of InGaSbBi, both Ga and Bi diffused into the InSb seed and there appeared domains of InBi. For comparison, InSb1−yBiy (0〈y≤0.05) and In1−xGaxSb (0〈x≤0.16) were grown on InSb. It turned out that Bi did not diffuse into InSb without Ga, but Ga diffused without Bi. The incorporation of Ga produced the excess In and as a result InBi domains were formed.

Notes: Samples of CdTe microcrystallites doped glasses were fabricated by a high energy pulsed laser evaporation method. In order to fabricate a CdTe doped glass, synthesis of CdTe microcrystallites and formation of SiO2 films were carried out alternately on a fused silica glass substrate. The absorption edge of the CdTe doped glasses shifted to a higher energy region than that of the bulk CdTe due to the quantum size effect as the particle size of CdTe microcrystallites decreased. The third-order nonlinear susceptibility of χ(3) was estimated to be 4×10−7 esu at 580 nm using the method of degenerate four wave mixing.

Notes: Summary Protective effects of NMDA antagonists on dopaminergic and serotonergic neurotoxicity produced by methamphetamine (MA) were examined. Four injections of MA (7.5 mg/kg, s.c., at 2 h intervals) caused significant decrements (40–60% of control values) in levels of dopamine (DA) and its metabolites in the rat striatum and levels of serotonin (5-HT) and its metabolite in the medial prefrontal cortex, nucleus accumbens, striatum, anterior hypothalamus, amygdala and hippocampus. These decreases in DA, 5-HT and their metabolites were prevented by pretreatment with MK-801, a noncompetitive N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) antagonist, or D-CPP-ene (SDZ EAA 494), a competitive NMDA antagonist. The results suggest that NMDA receptors play a role for MA-induced serotonergic damage in various brain regions as well as dopaminergic damage in the striatum.

Notes: Summary In order to determine the relevance of 5-HT1A-related signal transduction in the mode of action of lithium and antidepressants, the effects of long-term treatment with these drugs on the 5-HT1A-mediated inhibition of forskolin-stimulated adenylate cyclase activity were investigated in the rat hippocampal membranes. Chronic administration of antidepressants altered neither the [3H]8-hydroxy-2-(di-n-propylamino)tetralin ([3H]8-OH-DPAT) binding sites nor the inhibition of forskolin-stimulated adenylate cyclase activity by 5-HT. Long-term treatment with lithium did not affect the inhibitory effect of 5-HT on the forskolin-stimulated adenylate cyclase activity, either. Neither the stimulation by forskolin nor the inhibition by guanyl-5′-ylimidodiphosphate (Gpp(NH)p) of adenylate cyclase activity was not influenced by lithium treatment, suggesting that lithium has no effects on the components of adenylate cyclase system distal to the 5-HT1A receptors. These results indicate that the 5-HT1A-mediated neural transmission has not such an important relevance in the mechanisms of action of lithium or antidepressants.

Notes: Abstract Sintering behaviour and microstructure of Al2O3 ceramics without additives and with 0.02−0.25 mol% CaO + SiO2 (CaO/SiO2 = 1) were investigated. When Al2O3 bodies were sintered at 1400 °C, the sinterability and the grain size decreased as the content of CaO + Si2 increased. When Al2O3 ceramics with 0.05 − 0.25 mol% CaO + SiO2 were sintered at higher sintering temperature, both CaO and SiO2 reacted with Al2O3 to produce the liquid phase along grain boundaries, and exaggerated platelet Al2O3 grains, with an aspect ratio of about 4.5, were formed. Because the size of platelet grains decreased as the content of CaO + SiO2 increased, the distribution of either SiO2 particles or this intergranular phase of CaO − Al2O3 − SiO2 might control the microstructure.

Notes: Abstract CdTe microcrystals encapsulated in a silica glass layer were successfully fabricated. Spherical CdTe microcrystals were prepared by laser evaporation of a CdTe target in an argon gas atmosphere. The ensuing microcrystals plus argon gas passed through a tetramethoxysilane (TMOS)+O2 plasma in which they were encapsulated in an amorphous layer, 2–2.5 nm thick. Characteristic X-rays from the surface layer were measured using an energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer equipped in a high-resolution transmission electron microscope. Measurements indicated that the glass layer consisted of silicon and oxygen, with no cadmium or tellurium included. The CdTe microcrystals fabricated with our laser evaporation system showed two specific kinds of particle: small particles (below 10 nm) and large ones (over 100 nm). Using precise electron-beam diffraction testing, we concluded that the large microcrystal is a single crystal with a hexagonal structure. The deposition rates and infrared transmission of silica glass prepared by TMOS or tetraethoxysilane plasma-enhanced chemical vapour deposition are also discussed. The highest deposition rate, 30 nm s−1, of silica glass can be achieved in the centre of the plasma when the input r.f. power is 150 W.

Notes: Abstract Computer simulations of phase decomposition were performed for the Cu-Co alloy system on the basis of the non-linear diffusion equation. In the calculations, the modified regular solution approximation was adopted, i.e. the composition and temperature dependences of the interaction parameter, Ω, between the nearest neighbour atoms were taken into account and the mobility of atoms was defined as a function of solute composition. The phase decompositions were successfully computed for the Cu-Co alloys. The calculation method proposed here is applicable to many actual alloy systems.
