Notes: Summary Encephalo-duro-arterio-synangiosis (EDAS) was done in 16 Japanese children with Moyamoya disease on 22 sides. The results were evaluated clinically, angiographically, and by positron emission computed tomography (PET). Postoperative external carotid angiograms showed a good collateral circulation through EDAS in 72 percent of the treated sides. Two-thirds of the sides examined by PET showed improvement in cerebral blood circulation, particularly at the surgically-treated cortex. Postoperatively the symptoms disappeared in those with good new collateral formation. TIA, RIND, and/or involuntary movement disappaered in 31 percent and partially so in 44 percent 6 months after EDAS. The TIA in the lower limb and/ or involuntary movement persisted in some children. This surgical approach seems applicable particularly for children with the ischaemic type of Moyamoya disease, however, the procedure also has drawbacks. Development of collateral circulation was insufficient in some cases, and the territories of the anterior cerebral artery (ACA) or posterior cerebral artery (PCA) were often not covered, even in those with a good new collateral formation in the middle cerebral arterial (MCA) area.

Notes: Plasma fibronectin (FN) of flounder Paralichthys olivacem was purified and characterized. Flounder FN was purified by a combination of affinity chromatography using Sepharose coupled with flounder gelatin and gel filtration on Superose 6. Flounder FN was found to be a disulphide-linked heterodimer of 220 and 230 kDa polypeptides. It had cell-spreading activity for baby hamster kidney (BHK) cells, which was inhibited by the synthetic peptide, Gly-Arg-Gly-Asp-Ser-Pro. In flounder explants, anti-flounder FN antiserum distinguished fibroblast-like cells from epithelial cells; indirect immunofluorescence showed that the fibroblast-like cells exhibited a fibrous staining to the antiserum, but that epithelial cells did not. These results suggest that flounder FN is a homologue of mammalian FN.The localization of FN during re-epithelialization at the site of a severed fin was investigated. When the top of the fin was cut, epidermal cells covered the surface of the wound within 1 h. FN is detected at the wound site during epidermal cell migration, suggesting that it serves as a cell-adhesion factor for prompt re-epithelialization at wound sites.

Notes: Wavelength conversion has been demonstrated using a distributed feedback side-injection light-controlled bistable laser diode with an input wavelength range of 1496–1597 nm. Insensitivity to input light wavelength and a large separation ratio of output from input (more than 30 dB) are advantageous for a wavelength converter.

Notes: Summary Ossification of the ligamentum flavum in the thoracolumbar spine is rare in young adults. We report two cases in 22 year old males who required surgical treatment. The first patient was obese and hyperinsulinaemic. He had a compression myelopathy below T11 due to extensive posterior ossification. The second patient had an osteoid osteoma of the right pedicle of T11 with ossification of the adjacent ligamenta flava. Both patients benefited from surgical decompression of the spine.

Notes: Summary The neuroradiological findings in four patients with Tay-Sachs disease are described in three phases of the clinical course. The basal ganglia and cerebral white matter show low density on computed tomography and high signal intensity on T2-weighted magnetic resonance imaging in the initial phase. The caudate nuclei are characteristically enlarged and protrude into the lateral ventricles in the first and second phases. The cerebral white matter shows low density on the CT which varies in extent from the second to third phases, and the whole brain becomes atrophic in the last phase. Thus, central nervous system involvement in the disease may begin in basal ganglia as well as in cerebral white matter.

Notes: Abstract Basic structures and functions of optically addressed spatial light modulators (SLMs) are discussed in the context of system applications. The most important functions imposed on spatial light modulators are those of image acceptance and transducers. SLMs using ferroelectric liquid crystal (FLC) satisfy essential requirements for high levels of resolution, sensitivity and response speed. We specifically surveyed the current performance of bipolar-operational spatial light modulators (BSLMs) that sufficiently exploit the bistability of FLC to output reversibly positive and negative images and to store them. The high performance of BSLMs makes them useful for many optical applications including image processing and real-time holography.

Notes: Abstract Demographic and reproductive data were analyzed for a period of 28 years in the females of a free-ranging group of Japanese macaques at Katsuyama, Okayama Prefecture, Japan. The overall mean, age-specific fecundity rates were 5.43% for 4-year-olds and 41.86% for 5-year-olds, increasing to a peak of 66.67% for 13-year-olds. Fecundity remained relatively high (52.31–54.24%) in 16–19-year-olds, but decreased sharply (45.45–17.86%) in 20–23-year-olds, and became very low in 24–26-year-olds. Females aged 27 years or more did not produce infants. The average age at first birth was 5.41 years. Births peaked in mid-May. The timing of the first births each year remained essentially unchanged during the study period, whereas the timing of the median and last births shifted towards the later part of the season. The mean interbirth interval for all females was 1.56 years. The value was 1.54 years for multiparous females and 1.29 years for females following infant loss. These intervals were significantly shorter than those for primiparous females, and females with surviving infants. The overall mean infant mortality within the first year of life was 10.2%. The value was 8.6% for 10–14-year-olds, and 7.5% for 15–19-year-olds. The timing of birth differed among the four female matrilineal dominance rank-classes. The female fecundity rates increased as a function of matrilineal dominance rank. It is suggested that all demographic and reproductive data should be analyzed in detail with respect to the group's history.
