Notes: Contact resistivity curves are given in terms of intrinsic barrier height and doping level for ohmic contacts to n-type direct band-gap III-V semiconductor compounds, including AlxGa1−xAs. The results are based on a rigorous treatment of carrier transport across the metal-semiconductor interface. They show that the resistivity behaves quite differently from what might be expected from the usual notion of the effects of doping and barrier height on the resistivity. As such, the results can be used as a useful guide in attempts to lower the contact resistivity.

Notes: Abstract The object-oriented programing (OOP) methodology is introduced as a means for improving the management of a complex engineering software. The drawbacks of existing engineering software development techniques are pinpointed. The basic concepts of the OOP methodology are interpreted in the context of engineering applications. The familiar concept of a matrix is used as an example to interpret the ideas presented. It is concluded that the OOP methodology facilitates the management of complex engineering software systems.

Notes: Abstract A creep apparatus has been constructed for anin situ determination of length and length change. Using this apparatus, the creep behaviour of PVC thin films associated with quenching and ageing was studied. The more severe the quench through the glass transition temperature (T g), the greater is the instantaneous elastic deformation and the subsequent creep behaviour. As ageing proceeds, the quenched films gradually lose the ductility incurred by quenching. These results agree well with the well-known phenomena of physical ageing. Thus, the changes reflecting molecular mobilities due to quenching and ageing can be properly monitored by such a creep apparatus.

Notes: Abstract A commercial alumina powder was processed to remove aggregates and agglomerates for the study of processing influence on sintering behaviour and structure evolution. Slip-casting a uniformly dispersed slurry formed green compacts with homogeneous particle packing, which subsequently resulted in a nearly defect-free microstructure upon sintering. Dry-pressing the granules that possessed a similar homogeneous microstructure led to compacts with larger voids and particle-packing inhomogeneity. The inhomogeneity persisted through sintering and evolved voids with a size of about 6 μm. However, under the same sintering condition, the sintered density of the dry-pressed compact approached that of the slip-cast compact. The grain sizes of both sintered compacts were similar, implying that differences in consolidation effectiveness do not necessarily incur variation in grain growth provided the compacts are prepared from the same starting powder and sintered under the same condition.

Notes: Abstract Effects of various gabergic anthelmintics on the guanidine-induced twitch responses in isolated frog rectus preparations were examined. All gabergic anthelmintics such as milbemycin oxime, milbemycin D, avermectin B1a, invermectin, and diethylcarbamazine (DEC) showed stimulatory effects on the guanidine-induced twitch responses at their higher concentrations. Only piperazine caused inhibitory effects on the twitch responses, even at higher concentrations. The stimulation of the twitch responses by the gabergic anthelmintics was antagonized with tetrodotoxin, hemicholinium-3, dtubocurarine, and strychnine. These results suggest that all gabergic anthelmintics except piperazine stimulate the release of acetylcholine from the nerve endings and that all of them, including piperazine, have different effects on the gabergic mechanism at lower concentrations and on the cholinergic mechanism at higher concentrations.
