Notes: Abstract Included in this study were 43 cases of mucocutaneous lymph node syndrome (MCLS or Kawasaki disease) treated solely with aspirin. Of these, 19 developed coronary aneurysm. Mononuclear cells (MNC) of these MCLS patients were collected weekly and stimulated either with phytohaemagglutinin (PHA) or PHA plus phorbol myristic acetate. The production of interleukin-2 (IL-2), tumour necrotic factor (TNF) and gamma-interferon (IFN-r) was determined. In addition, IL-2, TNF, IFN-r from serial collections of serum samples of these patients were also measured. The results show that serum IL-2 and TNF were detected in the 1st week, reached maximal plateau in the 2nd and 3rd week and decreased 1 month later. The production of IL-2, TNF and IFN-r from MCLS patients' MNC increased from the 1st to the 3rd week, persisted at a high level for 1 month and then decreased. During the 2nd and 3rd weeks, there were significantly higher serum IL-2 levels and IL-2 production in patients with than in patients without coronary lesions. These observations suggest that the serum IL-2 level and IL-2 production during the 2nd week may serve as a predictive parameter for coronary aneurysm formation. It also suggests that the production of TNF, IL-2 and IFN-r from MNC may contribute to the development of vascular injury in acute MCLS.

Notes: Abstract In this study, we measured serially the serum levels of cytokines including interleukin-6 (IL-6), IL-8, soluble IL-2 receptor (sIL-2R) and tumour necrosis factor α (TNF-α) in 60 patients with Kawasaki disease (KD) and evaluated the clinical significance of these cytokines in predicting coronary aneurysm formation. Of the 60 patients, 12 were complicated with coronary aneurysm. Blood samples were collected within the 1st week after onset of fever, then once a week for the 1st month, and once a month for another 5 months. The serum levels of IL-6, IL-8, sIL-2R and TNFα were measured using an ELISA or RIA method. Our results show that the changes in serum IL-6 and IL-8 were faster than those of sIL-2R and TNFα. Within the 1st week, the serum levels of IL-6 and IL-8 were significantly higher in the patients with than in those without coronary aneurysm (P〈0.001). In addition, the serum levels of IL-6 and IL-8 obtained in the 1st week were highly correlated (P〈0.001) with those of C-reactive protein and erythrocyte sedimentation rate, and the serum levels of sIL-2R and TNFα were also increased at the 1st week reaching the highest level in the 2nd week. In the 2nd week, the serum levels of sIL-2R and TNFα were significantly higher in the patients with than in those without coronary aneurysm (P〈0.05). These findings suggest that the serum levels of IL-6 and IL-8 obtained in the 1st week may serve as useful parameters in predicting coronary aneurysm formation in KD patients.

Notes: Radio-frequency-sputtered amorphous as-grown PbZr0.44Ti0.56O3 (PZT) thin films were prepared on glass substrates from a PZT ceramic target with excess PbO. They were subsequently treated with a laser-induced phase transformation technique to achieve a pure perovskite structure. The optimal conditions for the process were determined. During the whole fabrication process, the substrate was kept at room temperature. This technique was also compared with traditional oven and rapid thermal processing after-deposition treatments. © 1994 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The structure and hydrogen gas sensing properties of a trench Pd-thin oxide-Si Schottky diode are studied and compared with a planar one. The trench diode possesses additional vertical surface area and a large number of interface traps induced by injected hydrogen ions. The additional vertical surface area enlarges the entrance of H2 molecules, and the generated middle traps enhance the carrier tunneling. Also, the generated shallow traps can catch the carrier to form a thin surface charge layer and lower the barrier. The sensitivity of the trench diode is thus higher than that of the planar diode under room-temperature operation.

Notes: Summary An experiment was conducted in mice to examine whether selection can increase reproductive life and lifetime production of progeny. Mice in two lines with litter size standardized at birth and in two lines without standardization were pair-mated at 7 weeks of age and maintained as long as they produced litters up to 382 days. Progeny from the sixth litters were used to maintain the four selected lines, while progeny from the first litters were bred to maintain unselected control lines. Selected and control lines were compared at five and six generations of the selected lines. Contemporary comparisons revealed that the length of reproductive life and most lifetime production traits were significantly greater in the selected than in control lines. Realized heritability of the length of reproductive life ranged from 0.08 to 0.13. It was concluded that the length of reproductive life and lifetime production in mice can be increased by selection.

Notes: Abstract The human papillomavirus was detected in cervicovaginal cells by the polymerase chain reaction in 14 of 37 (37.8 %) patients attending a sexually transmitted disease (STD) clinic and in 6 of 43 healthy young women (14.0 %) undergoing routine gynecologic examinations who served as controls. The results indicated that even the more malignant types of human papillomaviruses were not uncommon among the control group, and that the prevalence of human papillomavirus infection was significantly higher in STD clinic patients than in the control group. These findings confirm the suggestion that factors other than human papillomavirus infections may be involved in the pathogenesis of cervical cancer.

Notes: Abstract The present paper describes an implementation of genetic search methods in multicriterion optimal designs of structural systems with a mix of continuous, integer and discrete design variables. Two distinct strategies to simultaneously generate a family of Pareto optimal designs are presented in the paper. These strategies stem from a consideration of the natural analogue, wherein distinct species of life forms share the available resources of an environment for sustenance. The efficacy of these solution strategies are examined in the context of representative structural optimization problems with multiple objective criteria and with varying dimensionality as determined by the number of design variables and constraints.
