Notes: Time-resolved four wave mixing (4WM) signals of conjugated polymers are calculated using a density matrix approach and the Hartree–Fock approximation. The influence of the Coulomb interaction as well as size effects on the nonlinear optical response are examined. For the Hückel model (no Coulomb interaction), quantum beats due to the coherent excitation of several band states are found for small sizes, and photon echo-like behavior is obtained for infinite size. The Coulomb interaction changes the nature of the response and gives rise to a broad delayed signal whose temporal profile is determined by the dephasing time.

Notes: The effects of the H+, K+-ATPase inhibitor BY 1023/SK&F 96022 on pentagastrin-stimulated acid secretion have been studied in healthy male volunteers (n= 12). The gastric acid response to submaximal pentagastrin-stimulation (0.6 μg/h/kg b.w.) was dose-dependently inhibited. A single dose of 5 mg decreased acid output by 22% while after 60 mg and 80 mg secretion was almost completely abolished.A good dose linearity was observed for AUC (0, 〉) and Cmax over the dose range from 5 to 80 mg. Elimination half-life, total clearance and volume of distribution of the parent compound were independent of the dose. The drug was well tolerated up to the highest dose of 80 mg. No clinically relevant influence was found on either laboratory screen or cardiovascular parameters.

Notes: Abstract We give an upper bound on the number of vertices ofP I , the integer hull of a polyhedronP, in terms of the dimensionn of the space, the numberm of inequalities required to describeP, and the size ϕ of these inequalities. For fixedn the bound isO(m n ϕ n− ). We also describe an algorithm which determines the number of integer points in a polyhedron to within a multiplicative factor of 1+ε in time polynomial inm, ϕ and 1/ε when the dimensionn is fixed.

Notes: Abstract Objective To compare subcutaneous (PscO2) and transcutaneous (PtcO2) oxygen tension measurements in relation to hemodynamic variables at different levels of PEEP, and to evaluate the usefulness of these measurements as monitors of peripheral tissue perfusion. Design Prospective trial. Setting Intensive care unit in a university hospital. Patients Seven patients with gastric cancer who where undergoing total gastrectomy. Interventions Silicone catheter was placed in the upper arm and transcutaneous oxygen monitor was placed on the upper part of the chest. A pulmonary artery catheter was placed in the right pulmonary artery. Measurements and results PscO2 and PtcO2 together with hemodynamic variables were measured at different levels of PEEP. Progressive increase of PEEP reduced cardiac index (CI) (p〈0.05) with a concomitant decrease of PscO2 (p〈0.05) and oxygen delivery (DO2) (p〈0.05). Changes in PtcO2 parallelled changes in arterial oxygen tension (PaO2), but no correlation was found between PtcO2, CI and DO2. Conclusion PscO2 is a sensitive indicator of subcutaneous tissue perfusion, which can be used to identify the PEEP level, with optimum peripheral perfusion. PscO2 seems to be a more reliable indicafor of tissue perfusion than PtcO2.

Notes: Abstract The localisation of insulin receptors (IR) was investigated on cryosections of human non-pathologic first trimester and full term placentae by indirect immunohistochemistry with three different monoclonal antibodies (MABS). In placentae from 6 to 10 weeks post-menstruation (p-m.), only syncytiotrophoblast was stained, predominantly that of mesenchymal villi and syncytial sprouts, which are areas of high proliferative activity. In placentae from 11 to 14 weeks p-m., endothelial cells commenced to react with the IR MABS and the syncytiotrophoblast was less intensely labelled than at weeks 6 to 10 p-m. In term placentae, the microvillous membrane of the syncytiotrophoblast showed only patches of weak immunoreactivity. In contrast, the endothelial cells in the placenta but not in the umbilical cord were strongly stained. The amniotic epithelium in the chorionic plate and fibroblasts in the stroma were conspicuously labelled. The data indicate: (1) the receptor density on villous syncytiotrophoblast decreases and that of fetal endothelium increases throughout gestation; (2) syncytiotrophoblast of human term placentae expresses a low level per unit area of surface IR; and (3) the majority of IR in human term placentae is located in fetal endothelium. Apart from yet unknown functional effects of maternal and fetal insulin at the placental barrier, the results suggest a growth promoting effect on the trophoblast of maternal insulin in first trimester as well as developmental effects of fetal insulin on the feto-placental vessels at term.

Notes: Abstract Holes in cation exchange membranes of alkali chloride cells can have a number of different causes. They do not represent a source of great danger during operation of a membrane electrolyser as long as their number is limited or their combined diameter does not exceed a certain size. Of the different methods for detection of holes in membranes, two procedures are described in detail: the cell voltage test and the leak test with measurement of the gas flow through the holes. The cell voltage test is performed with low time consumption during start-up of an electrolyser. It mainly shows the large membrane holes in a cell. In contrast to this, with the leak test all holes in a membrane are detected. However, the procedure is time consuming and is possible only with a totally drained electrolyser. It is recommended to perform these tests immediately after installing new membranes and then from time to time in order to avoid damage to the cells or to the plant chlorine system.

Notes: Abstract During the operation of an industrial-scale membrane electrolysis plant over a number of years, a record was kept of the formation of the byproduct oxygen in the anode gas and chlorate in the anolyte parallel to the decline of the current efficiencies of the main products. It was found that the current efficiencies of the byproducts increase linearly with the declining current efficiencies of the main products, chlorine and caustic soda. Of the two types of anode used, one exhibited considerably more oxygen formation than the other. The high-oxygen anode was associated with distinctly lower chlorate formation than the low-oxygen anode. The increasing oxygen contents and chlorate formation rates associated with falling caustic current efficiency are reported for both types of anode. If hydrochloric acid is used to destroy the chlorate, the amount of acid must be increased as the caustic current efficiency falls. The amounts of hydrochloric acid required for the two types of anode are calculated as examples for 96% and 93% caustic current efficiency.

Notes: Abstract Na clusters bound to mica surfaces have been irradiated with pulsed and cw visible laser light. Kinetic energy and angular distributions of the Na atoms desorbing from the clusters have been determined using cw two-photon laser-induced fluorescence detection. In addition the dependence of the desorption rate on laser power, wavelength and polarization has been measured. The most probable kinetic energyE kin of the photodesorbed atoms at the surface temperatureT S =300 K was found to beE kin=18±5 meV, independent of laser irradiance (3 µJ/cm2...20 mJ/cm2) and wavelength (450 nm, 505 nm, 658 nm). With increasing orientation angle between detection axis and surface normal (0°≦Θ≦90°)E kin was observed to decrease slightly, while it was nearly independent of surface temperature betweenT S =30 K andT S =300 K. Also, with increasing radius of the Na clusters the desorbing Na atoms slowed down. The angular distribution of the Na atoms was of cos2-type with respect to the surface normal. These observations suggest that laser-induced desorption of Na from Na clusters bound to mica surfaces involves an initial rate-limiting step of direct surface plasmon excitation followed by a final step of delayed thermal desorption.
