Notes: Abstract The present paper concerns the stagnation flow produced by counter flowing air jets. Little experimental information exists on such flows in spite of their extensive employment in the theoretical treatment of diffusion flames. To remedy this situation, laser-Doppler measurements were performed to quantify the entire flow field. The experiments are described and the results of the velocity measurements presented. Differences between the investigated flow field and the ideal flow field, employed in theoretical studies, are pointed out.

Notes: Abstract Two polymorphisms were detected within exon 14 of the inter-alpha-trypsin inhibitor heavy chain H1 (ITIH1) gene. The polymorphisms are detected by digesting the same 202-bp polymerase reaction product with the PstI and HphI restriction endonucleases. These gene polymorphisms lead to the change of two amino acids in the mature protein. The polymorphisms can be used for the analysis of 3p21 deletion in human carcinomas as well as to develop a better understanding of the protein polymorphism already described.

Notes: Summary Humic acids from two Brazilian topsoils under savanna grassland and five soil fungal melanins were characterized by elemental, functional group and infrared analysis. C, N, total acidity, COOH, and phenolic OH contents were within the ranges reported for several other fungal melanins and soil humic acids. Compared with the soil humic acids, the infrared spectra of the fungal melanins showed greater detail, indicative of higher aliphaticity. They were similar to the type III infrared spectra of humic acids, which are characteristically high in proteinaceous material and polysaccharides. The infrared spectra of the humic acids from the two Brazilian soils studied were classified as type I, which includes most soil humic acids. Notwithstanding the greater detail, in some areas the fungal melanin spectra were similar to those reported for other fungal melanins and humic acids of different origins. The probable contribution of the melanic fungi to the formation of soil humic polymers is discussed.

Notes: The aim of the Couy experiment in the ‘Géologie Profonde de la France’ programme was to reach the source body of the magnetic anomaly of the ‘Bassin de Paris'. The drilling stopped at 3500 m. Magnetic field logging and susceptibility logging were undertaken to obtain as complete a description as possible of the magnetic parameters of rocks crossed by the borehole. Remanent magnetization and susceptibility measurements on the core were also carried out. The entire set of results is presented in this paper for both sedimentary layers and the basement. The values obtained for magnetic field variations and for susceptibility lead to the conclusion that the magnetic source body of the AMBP was not reached.

Notes: The supersonic expansion of a mixture of a heavy gas and a light gas may result in a velocity slip and a temperature difference between light and heavy species. The purpose of this paper is to study the influence of these phenomena on the relaxation of internal degrees of freedom which takes place when one of the gases is a diatomic one. The model presented is based on the Wang–Chang–Uhlenbeck theory and on the assumption of a two-velocity and two-temperature model to represent the velocity distributions. The model incorporates the internal degrees of freedom of the diatomic molecule and can be used to study the effect of velocity slip and temperature difference on the mechanism of internal energy transfer involved in a free-jet expansion. The hydrodynamical equations and the master kinetic equations are derived. The formalism is applied to the system I2–He, assuming that a rotational temperature and a relaxation equation to describe the rotational relaxation can be defined. The unexpected high rotational temperatures observed experimentally in I2–He expansions presenting a velocity slip are reproduced.

Notes: Abstract The objective of the Nephelometer Experient aboard the Probe of the Galileo mission is to explore the vertical structure and microphysical properties of the clouds and hazes in the atmosphere of Jupiter along the descent trajectory of the Probe (nominally from 0.1 to 〉 10 bars). The measurements, to be obtained at least every kilometer of the Probe descent, will provide the bases for inferences of mean particle sizes, particle number densities (and hence, opacities, mass densities, and columnar mass loading) and, for non-highly absorbing particles, for distinguishing between solid and liquid particles. These quantities, especially the location of the cloud bases, together with other quantities derived from this and other experiments aboard the Probe, will not only yield strong evidence for the composition of the particles, but, using thermochemical models, for species abundances as well. The measurements in the upper troposphere will provide ‘ground truth’ data for correlation with remote sensing instruments aboard the Galileo Orbiter vehicle. The instrument is carefully designed and calibrated to measure the light scattering properties of the particulate clouds and hazes at scattering angles of 5.8°, 16°, 40°, 70°, and 178°. The measurement sensitivity and accuracy is such that useful estimates of mean particle radii in the range from about 0.2 to 20 μ can be inferred. The instrument will detect the presence of typical cloud particles with radii of about 1.0 μ, or larger, at concentrations of less than 1 cm3.

Notes: Summary The Hep G2 hepatoma cell line synthesizes the inter-alpha-trypsin inhibitor (ITI). This protease inhibitor and the other proteins of this family include four polypeptides chains: three heavy chains (HC1, HC2, HC3) and one light chain (bikunin). In the present study, we have demonstrated by immunofluorescence that ITI is detected mainly in perinuclear cytoplasmic zones comparable to those of albumin or alpha-1-antitrypsin. The presence of the mRNAs of the four polypeptide chains in all Hep G2 cells of a non-synchronized culture have been demonstrated by in situ hybridization. An evaluation of the transcription of the four ITI genes through an analysis of markings brings to the fore a clearly much higher rate of mRNAs from the light chain than from the heavy chains. The mRNAs corresponding to the HC2 chains are more heavily represented than are those corresponding to the HC1 and HC3 chains. In Hep G2 cells in culture, a quantification of mRNAs based on the in situ hybridization technique shows that their relative quantities, in decreasing order, are those of L, HC2, HC3 and HC1.
