Notes: Summary Serum proinsulin is disproportionately elevated compared to insulin in Type 2 (non-insulin-dependent) diabetes mellitus. We studied the effect of obesity on serum proinsulin with varying degrees of glucose intolerance. Serum proinsulin and insulin were measured during a 75 g oral glucose tolerance test in 73 obese and 74 non-obese subjects with normal, borderline or diabetic-type glucose tolerance. Proinsulin was assayed by a direct radioimmunoassay using proinsulin-specific antiserum. Fasting serum proinsulin and insulin and the summed values of proinsulin and insulin during oral glucose tolerance test were significantly, or tended to be, higher in obese subjects than in those without obesity in each category of glucose tolerance. However, the molar ratio of proinsulin to insulin was nearly the same between obese and non-obese groups with a similar degree of glucose tolerance. On the other hand, the proinsulin/insulin ratio increased progressively with the deterioration of glucose tolerance. We conclude that proinsulin secretion is disproportionately increased in the presence of glucose intolerance but not by obesity itself. Each Beta cell seems to function normally in obese subjects while glucose tolerance remains normal.

Notes: Summary Although HLA-DQB1 alleles encoding aspartic acid at position 57 (Asp-57) are protective against Type 1(insulin-dependent) diabetes mellitus in Caucasians, most Japanese Type 1 diabetic patients carry at least one Asp-57 DQB1 allele. We analysed the DRB1, DQA1 and DQB1 genes of 99 Japanese patients and 86 control subjects with polymerase chain reaction and sequence-specific oligonucleotide hybridization. We found that (1) the DQA1*0301 allele was significantly increased in Type 1 diabetic patients (RR 7.8,pc 〈 0.0001); (2) the DRB1*0405 (Dw15) allele, which is a subtype of DR4 haplotype, was significantly increased in DR4-positive patients (RR 12.0,pc 〈 0.001); and (3) although the DRw8-DQw8 haplotype was positively associated with Type 1 diabetes, the DRBl*0406-DQw8 haplotype was decreased in the diabetic patients. These data indicate that DRB 1 and DQA1 genes also confer susceptibility to Type 1 diabetes in Japanese.

Notes: Abstract Precipitation of a protein by ultracentrifuge with an angle rotor was investigated experimentally. Experimental data for Lysozyme and Bovine serum albumin were compared with the calculated distribution of concentration, and an agreement between calculated curves and experimental data during the course of ultracentrifugation was obtained. From the first approximated model presented in our previous paper, it is observed that the precipitation of a protein by ultracentrifuge with an angle rotor proceeds more rapidly than that with a swing rotor.

Notes: Abstract We report the CT and MRI findings of an inflammatory pseudotumour of the spleen, which is an extremely rare benign inflammatory lesion. CT scans obtained 1 h after contrast administration and T2-weighted MRI images clearly demonstrated the central fibrosis and peripheral granuloma of this lesion.

Notes: The light-induced decrease of the photoconductivity in deuterated amorphous silicon is a factor of 3 less even though the defect density increase is greater than in hydrogenated material having equivalent as-deposited properties. Consequent changes in the average recombination cross section of the defects is illustrated. Since the differences in the light soaking behavior upon isotopic substitution has been found to disappear in films deposited at low temperatures, the changes are thought to arise from differences in the silicon network occurring during growth.

Notes: First experimental results on light-induced annealing (LIA) of deposition-induced defects (DID) in hydrogenated amorphous silicon (a-Si:H) are reported. LIA of DID and of light-induced defects (LID) showed a big difference: the reduction in density of DID by LIA is as low as one third or less of LID reduced by LIA, while thermal annealing reduced DID and LID very similarly. Those results indicate a structural difference between DID and LID, and are discussed in connection with a structural model of a-Si:H.

Notes: Photoconductive and stable hydrogenated amorphous silicon thin films, prepared by plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition using a Xe-silane mixture at a substrate temperature of 250 °C, did not show any photo-induced degradation of the photoconductivity after 104 min light soaking (air mass-1, 100 mW/cm2). The network structure of these films is inhomogeneous and includes a large amount of clustered hydrogen as indicated by the low-temperature thermal effusion and the large, broad component in the nuclear magnetic resonance spectrum.

Notes: Abstract A case of horseshoe lung associated with scimitar syndrome is reproted. The patient, a six year old boy, had no respiratory distress. Plain chest film showed hypoplasia of the right lung and scimitar vein. Angiography demonstrated that right inferior pulmonary arteries crossed the midline and reached to the left lung base.

Notes: Abstract ThexB2O3 · (20-x) P2O5 · 80SiO2 (in mol%) glass films withx=0, 10 and 20 have been prepared from metal alkoxides by carrying out the coating in a dry atmosphere. These coating films have shown a larger value of load at scratch and a smaller shrinkage during heat-treatment by replacing P2O5 in the films with B2O3. It has been found that B2O3 more effectively reduces the glass transition temperature of SiO2 glass than P2O5. The concentrations of sodium ions, which migrated from soda-lime-silica glass substrates during the film formation, were higher in phosphosilicate and borophosphosilicate films than in borosilicate and pure silica films. This finding should be ascribed to the gettering effects of phosphorus for sodium ions.
