Notes: Abstract We report new FIR laser lines from 13CH2F2 molecules optically pumped by a waveguide CO2 laser. The increased tunability (300 MHz) with respect to a conventional CO2 laser allows the pumping of 13CH2F2 vibrational transitions of large offset. 34 new laser lines have been discovered, ranging from 113.1 μm to 491.4 μm in wavelength, thus increasing the number of known FIR laser lines from this important molecule to 99. For all the new lines and many (36) of those known previously, precise offset measurements through the transferred Lamb-dip technique were performed. The frequency of six new laser lines was also directly measured by heterodyne detection with known laser lines.

Notes: Abstract Near-UV radiation is generated by doubling the frequency of a semiconductor laser in a nonlinear crystal. The crystal is contained in a resonant cavity in order to improve the conversion efficiency. The cavity increases the efficiency by about three orders of magnitude. This radiation has been used to perform spectroscopy of metastable magnesium in an atomic beam. We observed the (3s3p)3 P−(3s3d)3 D transition multiplet, which is of interest for metrological applications. The isotopic shift between24Mg and26Mg was measured and new information on the hyperfine structure of25Mg was obtained. This radiation source is promising also in order to improve the Mg frequency standard.

Notes: Abstract Radio and optical images of early-type galaxies with dust lanes have been analyzed in order to investigate the characteristics of the radio emission and to compare it with their properties at other frequencies. Except three galaxies, the remaining sources of our sample have diffuse radio emission, which does not extend beyond the stellar disk. The radio structures are small and weak (linear sizes in the range 2–10 kpc and radio powers in the range 5×1020–5×1021W Hz−1). Our preliminary results show that in a minority of cases (the most powerful radio sources) radio emission originates in the associated galactic nuclei, where a massive black hole is harboured. On the contrary, in the less powerful among our radio galaxies, sources originating from stellar phenomena may play and important role. We have classified the galaxies with respect to the dust lane morphology, comparing it with the radio emission. The sample is too small in order to reach firm conclusions, but the lack of radio sources in early-type galaxies with dust lanes along the galaxy minor axis seems to suggest that the accretion of material does not reach the conditions necessary to trigger nuclear activity.

Notes: Abstract WithN-body simulations, we study the evolution of the large-scale structure of the Universe, assuming non-Gaussian initial conditions. We also discuss the sensitivity of different statistical tests to the change of the initial conditions.

Notes: Summary An improved method of alanine-amino transferase determination is proposed. The reaction is carried out with alanine and 2-oxoglutarate as substrates and analysis is by HPLC on a reversed-phase chromatographic system using a C18 column and tetrabutylammonium phosphate in phosphate buffer (pH 7.0)-acetonitrile as mobile phase. The enzyme activity was determined by directly following the formation of pyruvic acid without employing any secondary reaction, which is necessary in the spectrophotometric method. The detection limit of pyruvic acid is 10 pmole μl−1 and the standard deviation for the enzymatic activity of standard solutions is 5.4%. Furthermore under the chromatographic conditions selected it is possible to detect the presence of some intermediate species.

Notes: Resolution of various α-DNS DL-amino acids by ligand exchange chromatography of L-phenylalaninamide-copper(II) complexes on a conventional reversed-phase packing is reported. Parameters of the mobile phase which control retention and enantioselectivity such as concentration of Cu(II) ion and L phenylalaninamide (PheNH2), pH, ionic strength, and acetonitrile content were examined. In order to obtain further information on the distribution and stability of the prevailing complex species formed between the metal ion and the chiral selector, spectrophotometric measurements in different media were also carried out.

Notes: Human keratinocyte growth factor (KGF) is an epithelial cell specific mitogen which is secreted by normal stromal fibroblasts. In the present studies, we demonstrate that KGF is as potent as EGF in stimulating proliferation of primary or secondary human keratinocytes in tissue culture. Exposure of KGF- or EGF-stimulated keratinocytes to 1.0 mM calcium, an inducer of differentiation, led to cessation of cell growth. However, immunologic analysis of early and late markers of terminal differentiation, K1 and filaggrin, respectively, revealed striking differences in keratinocytes propagated in the presence of these growth factors. With KGF, the differentiation response was associated with expression of both markers whereas their appearance was retarded or blocked by EGF. TGFα, which also interacts with the EGF receptor, gave a similar response to that observed with EGF. These findings functionally distinguish KGF from the EGF family and support the role of KGF in the normal proliferation and differentiation of human epithelial cells.
