Notes: Summary A healthy 14-month-old boy had multiple, circular, scar-like depressions on both temples, which had been present since birth. Delivery had been normal, and had not required the use of forceps or other instruments. His mother and one sister had similar, but less obvious, lesions on the temples. The three affected family members had similar facial features, with laterally deficient eyebrows, and a prominent upper lip with down-turned mouth. Additional features in the baby were sparse lower eyelashes, medial epicanthal folds, and skin dimpling on one side of the chin.Focal facial dermal dysplasia (FFDD) denotes a condition in which there are bitemporal, round, scarlike lesions. It is inherited as an autosomal dominant trait with variable penetrance and expressivity, and there are no associated features. Setleis' syndrome is recessively inherited, and is characterized by similar bitemporal defects associated with other dysmorphic features, including deficient eyelashes and a prominent upper lip. This report of dominantly inherited bitemporal dermal defects with characteristic facies supports the idea that FFDD and Setleis' syndrome are a single disorder.

Notes: The cardio-facio-cutaneous (CFC) syndrome has several features in common with the Noonan syndrome, but is distinguished by the presence of hyperkeratotic skin lesions, abnormal hair, and a lack of familial cases. We describe a family who clearly satisfy the criteria for the CFC syndrome, and show other features which have been reported in the Noonan syndrome but not in the CFC syndrome, namely a haemorrhagic diathesis and ocular abnormalities. This supports the concept that the CFC syndrome is a manifestation of the Noonan syndrome.

Notes: Summary Two unrelated children with von Recklinghausen's neurofibromatosis (NF1) had mothers with cutaneous NF1 lesions in a limited distribution. The cutaneous pattern in the mother of case 1 was clearly segmental, and probably represents mosaicism for the NF1 mutation which was passed on to the child. In the second case the distribution in the mother was less obviously segmental, but may still represent mosaicism. It is more difficult to diagnose mosaicism for NF1 in individuals with no affected offspring, or with more limited cutaneous manifestations. The difficulties in defining segmental NF and assigning a genetic risk are discussed.

Notes: Abstract— 21/4CrlMo steel and 11/4Cr1/2Mo steel have been widely been used for hydro-processing units such as hydro-desulphurising and hydro-cracking reactors. These reactor pressure vessel steels have a potential for temper embrittlement that leads to toughness degradation and a reduction of the critical flaw size for brittle fracture. These steels are also susceptible to hydrogen embrittlement, especially in aged steels where cracks may propagate in the base metal up to the critical flaw size. A vessel with adequate toughness when originally constructed may therefore embrittle during service and such changes may require pressure restrictions during start-up and shut-down.A survey of the literature shows composition to be the controlling parameter for both temper embrittlement (TE) and hydrogen embrittlement (HE), in-particular the presence of residual impurity elements such as P and the presence of elements such as Mo which nullify the effect of impurity segregation.Much information is available to describe embrittlement phenomena for Cr-Mo steels. This paper reviews the mechanisms of TE and HE and describes a microstructural characterisation route which subsequently allows the structural integrity of potentially embrittled vessels to be examined for the purposes of remaining life assessment and plant life extension.

Notes: Summary The ability of methanogenic bacteria to adapt to high concentrations of iron was investigated using a 9l Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket (UASB) reactor fed semi-continuously with a synthetic waste containing glucose as the organic carbon source. It was found that an iron concentration of up to 5 650 mg/l, which is well in excess of previously reported toxicity levels, had no inhibitory effects on anaerobic digestion, with the exception of a decrease in biogas production. The iron precipitated out and accumulated in the sludge bed of the digester, resulting in very low concentrations of iron in the digester effluent.

Notes: Abstract To gather data on sexuality, specifically in male veterans, and to test the hypothesis that aged males remain interested in sexual intercourse yet suffer from erectile failure, veterans age 30 to 99 were surveyed. The mailed survey had 88 questions and was pretested on young potent males and aged impotent males. From 1031 randomly selected subjects, there were 806 replies: 427 completed surveys, 247 refusals, and 132 who were too ill to participate (225 failed to reply). Among responders, sexual interest declined from a mean of 4.4/5 (4 = very interested, 5 = extremely interested) in men age 30–39 years to 2.0/5 (2 = slightly interested) in men age 90–99 (p 〈 0.0001). Vaginal intercourse was consistently the preferred sexual activity; however, intercourse frequency was diminished from a mean of once per week in 30- to 39-year-olds to once per year in 90- to 99-year-olds (p 〈 0.0001). Frequency, rigidity, and duration of erections were less in aged compared to younger cohorts (p 〈 0.0001). With these facts in mind, further research to bridge the libido-potency gap is warranted.

Notes: Abstract This study develops a multidimensional measure of financial stress in agriculture using confirmatory factor analysis. By examining the common variation in indicators of financial stress, the study is able to compare the level of financial stress in the 1980's with that of the 1930's.

Notes: Summary The ability of methanogenic bacteria to adapt to high concentrations of aluminium was investigated using a 9 ℓ Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket (UASB) reactor fed semi-continuously with a synthetic waste containing glucose as the organic carbon source. It was found that an influent concentration of 2500 mg/ℓ Al3+ could be tolerated by acclimatized methanogenic bacteria. However, if the concentration in the synthetic waste was further increased, inhibition of the methanogens resulted, with a corresponding decrease in digester performance. The aluminium precipitated as Al(OH)3 and accumulated in the sludge bed of the digester.
