    Notes: Summary The activity of an immunostimulatory complex (PICKCa) which is widely used against several human diseases in China was tested in experimental rabies prophylaxis. PICKCa protected mice against peripheral infection with both fixed and wild rabies strains. It also enhanced the protective activity of an experimental rabies vaccine injected either before or after rabies infection. PICKCa enhanced both non-specific immune responses and specific immunity including antibody production and cell mediated immunity as assessed by interleukin-2 production.

    Notes: Conclusion To summarize, the readout and the control system of the CCD mosaic camera are running since December 1991 at the La Silla Observatory (ESO). The overall performance of the camera has been good. About 12000 pictures (data and flat-fields) have been successfully registered up to now. We will report in the near future preliminary scientific results of the EROS experiment.

    Notes: Abstract A 20cm 2 CCD mosaic camera has been especially built to search for dark galactic halo objects by the gravitational microlensing effect. The sensitive area is made of 16 edge-buttable CCDs developped by Thomson-CTS, with 23×23 µm 2 pixels. The 35 kg camera housing and mechanical equipment is presented. The associated electronics and data acquisition system are described in a separate paper. The camera resides at the focal plane of a 40 cm, f/10, Ferson reflector. The instrument has been in operation since December 1991 at the La Silla Observatory (ESO).

    Notes: Abstract The excretion of cefotetan, a 7α-methoxycephalosporin, was studied in 27 patients undergoing biliary surgery. Pharmacokinetic parameters were determined after a single intravenous bolus dose of 1 g (10 patients) or 2 g (17 patients). Rapidly excreted in bile, cefotetan concentrations were considerably higher in bile [range: 92–2,594 mg·l−1 (1 g); 35–4,610 mg·l−1 (2 g)] than in plasma despite the presence of gall stones. Bile bactericidal activities againstStaphylococcus aureus (MIC 8 mg·l−1) andBacteroides fragilis (MIC 2 mg·l−1) correlated well with gall bladder cefotetan levels [r = 0.888 (1 g);r = 0.971 (2 g)]. No cefotetan was detected in the bile of 3 patients with nonfunctioning gall bladders. One other patient with very low activity and these three aside, the inhibitory quotients (cefotetan concentration/MIC) were 〉4 for both doses against both bacteria.

    Notes: Abstract The presence of serum in cell culture raises safety problems for the production of biologicals, thus a new serum-free medium (MDSS2) was developed. The evaluation of this medium for the growth of different cell lines (BHK-21 C13, BSR and Vero) has shown that cells grew in this medium similarly to standard serum-containing medium, independently of the culture system used: in static (as monolayer) as well as in agitated systems (in suspension in spinner and perfusion reactors). BHK-21 and BSR cells grew as aggregate cultures and could proliferate in both static and agitated culture systems. Vero cells stayed attached to a substrate and proliferated equally in static and in agitated microcarrier-culture systems. The cell densities obtained with BHK-21 cells depended only on the culture system used. They ranged from 2–3×106 to 6–12×106 cells per ml for static batch and perfusion reactor cultures respectively. The cell concentration was 3 to 6 times higher than in classical cultures performed in serum-containing medium. The cell densities obtained with Vero cells were indistinguishable from those obtained in serum-containing medium, whatever the cell culture system used. These cell lines have been used for the production of rabies virus. With respect to BHK-21 and BSR, similar production rates of rabies glycoprotein have been found as in the standard roller bottle process. The production of rabies virus and of viral glycoprotein by Vero cells cultivated in serum-free medium was augmented 1.5-fold and 2.5-fold, respectively, when compared to serum-containing medium. A recombinant BHK-21 cell line, producing human IL-2, can also proliferate in MDSS2, after addition of insulin. The specific IL-2 production rate was augmented 3–4 fold in comparison to serum-containing medium. For the cells tested, the MDSS2 serum-free medium is a good growth and production medium. Its use for cultivating other cell lines and/or for the production of other biologicals is discussed.

    Notes: The miscibility behavior of ternary poly(vinyl chloride)/poly(n-propyl methacrylate)/poly(n-amyl methacrylate) (PVC/PPMA/PAMA) and poly(vinyl chloride)/poly(n-butyl methacrylate)/poly(n-amyl methacrylate) (PVC/PBMA/PAMA) blends was investigated by differential scanning calorimetry. In both systems, a binary mixture of the two polymethacrylates is totally immiscible (PPMA with PAMA, and PBMA with PAMA). For PVC/PPMA/PAMA blends containing less than 70% PVC, the immiscible phase consists of two coexisting binary PVC/PPMA and PVC/PAMA phases. For an equal amount of the two polymethacrylates in the ternary blend, the PVC/PPMA phase contains 65% of the total weight of PVC and the whole quantity of PPMA; the total amount of PAMA mixes with the remaining 35% PVC to form the PVC/PAMA phase. In contrast, the miscibility zone is predominant in the ternary PVC/PBMA/PAMA system, since blends containing 30% or more of PVC exhibit a single glass transition temperature. In the immiscibe zone, the PVC is distributed equally between PBMA and PAMA, which is in contrast to the 65%-35% distribution found in the previous system. These results are consistent with the differences of miscibility observed in the binary PVC/polymethacrylate blends discussed.
