Notes: We present a theory of second-harmonic generation from chiral surfaces including contributions of electric and magnetic dipole transitions to the surface nonlinearity. The nonlinear polarization and magnetization of the surface as well as the second-harmonic fields that are radiated in the reflected and transmitted directions are expressed in terms of the six possible bilinear combinations of the components of the electric field of the fundamental beam. For the case in which the polarization of the fundamental beam is controlled by means of a quarter-wave plate between p-polarized linear and left- and right-hand circular, the second-harmonic fields can be expanded in terms of only three different functions of the rotation angle of the wave plate. The process exhibits nonlinear optical activity, i.e., it responds differently to the two circular polarizations of the fundamental beam if the phases of certain expansion coefficients are different. The theory is used to explain the results of a recent experiment and excellent agreement is found. The results suggest that in the experiment the largest components of the susceptibility tensors that include magnetic contributions were of the order of ∼10% of those of the electric dipole-allowed susceptibility tensor.

Notes: We observe a nonlinear light-scattering process in which incident photons at two different frequencies give rise to scattered radiation at the sum frequency in an isotropic medium. We utilize this process to determine the ratio β322/β333 of the dominant components of the molecular hyperpolarizability tensor β for para-nitroaniline.

Notes: Hyper-Rayleigh scattering has been developed as a generally applicable technique for the determination of the first hyperpolarizability β of a wide class of molecules [Clays and Persoons, Rev. Sci. Instrum. 63, 3285 (1992)]. In this article, we show that it is possible to replace the low repetition rate, nanosecond pulse, Q-switched laser source and fast gated electronics by a self-mode-locked, femtosecond pulse, broadly tunable continuous-wave laser and phase-sensitive detection. This results in a faster and much simpler measurement procedure. The accuracy of the femtosecond hyper-Rayleigh scattering set-up was checked by measuring the first hyperpolarizability β of the octopolar molecule crystal violet in methanol [(450±100)×10−30 esu at 800 nm]. The sensitivity of the instrument allows concentration-dependence studies, down to the pure solvent.

Notes: The experimental setup for the implementation of a new technique to determine the hyperpolarizability of nonlinear optical molecules in solution is presented. The new technique, hyper-Rayleigh scattering in solution [K. Clays and A. Persoons, Phys. Rev. Lett. 66, 2980 (1991)], has the advantage over the electric-field-induced second-harmonic generation technique that the dipole moment μ and the second hyperpolarizability γ do not have to be independently determined to obtain the first hyperpolarizability β. No electric field is needed to lower the intrinsic symmetry of the isotropic solution, leading to a simpler cell design and a simpler local field factor. The internal reference method, when applicable, completely eliminates the local field factor. With the technique presented, values of the first hyperpolarizability β of 23×10−30 esu for para-nitroaniline (PNA), 105×10−30 esu for 4-methoxy-4'-nitrostilbene (MONS), and 95×10−30 esu for 4-hydroxy-4'-nitrostilbene (HONS) dissolved in chloroform have been obtained.

Notes: We show that phase-conjugate interferometry is a measuring technique for third-order optical nonlinearities that can distinguish two-photon absorption from other nonlinear loss mechanisms. For the case of 3,3'-diethyloxadicarbocyanine iodide at 1064 nm, the nonlinear loss is dominated by linear absorption from the two-photon excited state. We observe a highly nonlinear absorption process in solutions of 4-methoxy-4'-nitrostilbene at 532 nm and show that it is due to a more complicated loss mechanism. This mechanism could have applications in optical limiting.

Notes: The synthesis and frequency doubling properties of nonlinear optical chromophore functionalized polystyrene with 4-nitro- or 4-cyano-4'-hydroxyazobenzene, or 2-[2-(4-hydroxyphenyl-ethenyl)]-3,5-dinitrothiophene are reported. The polymers with longer spacer length of the side chain chromophore show higher X(2) values, because of a better alignment under poling conditions. Values as high as 23,8 · 10-9esu at 1064 nm can be achieved. With a stronger acceptor group (3,5-dinitronthiophene) a value of 22 · 10-9esu was achieved for a chromophore content which was even 4 times smaller.

Notes: The synthesis and susceptibilities χ(2)33 and χ(2)31 to two series of polymethacrylates functionalized with 4-dialkylamino-4′-cyanoazobenzene and 4-dialkylamino-4′-cyanostilbene dyes are reported. The monomeric dyes were homo- and copolymerized with methyl methacrylate in various ratios, to produce polymers useful for nonlinear optical (NLO) applications. The second-order nonlinear optical properties of corona-poled aligned polymers were evaluated by second harmonic generation measurements. The χ(2)33 results for the azo-dye polymers are in the range of 25-324 · 10-9 esu, and for the stilbene-dye polymers in the range of 42-57 · 10-9 esu, depending on the functionalisation degree of the copolymers. The poled films do not show a significant decay in the second harmonic signal after four months.
