Notes: Abstract Rat lumbar dorsal root ganglion neurones projecting to the nucleus gracilis in the brainstem were retrogradely labelled with Fluoro-Gold and analysed immunocytochemically for their expression of substance P-, calcitonin gene-related peptide-, galanin-, galanin message-associated peptide-, neuropeptide Y-, nitric oxide synthase- and carbonic anhydrase-like immunoreactivity as well as affinity to Griffonia (bandeiraea) simplicifolia lectin I — isolectin B4, RT97 and to choleragenoid. The analysis was made both in uninjured rats and in rats which had been subjected to unilateral sciatic nerve transection and partial resection 3 weeks earlier. The data showed that 6% of the L4 and L5 lumbar dorsal root ganglion cells that projected to the nucleus gracilis showed substance P-like immunoreactivity. Following nerve injury, none of the nucleus gracilis-projecting dorsal root ganglion cells showed substance P-like immunoreactivity. Nineteen per cent of the investigated cell population showed calcitonin gene-related peptide-like immunoreactivity in uninjured rats, but no nucleus gracilisprojecting calcitonin gene-related peptide-positive cells were found after nerve injury. Galanin- and galanin message-associated peptide-like immunoreactivity were found in 2% and 3%, respectively, of the Fluoro-Gold-labelled cell population normally and in 22% and 14%, respectively, after injury. No neuropeptide Y-positive cells were found in the Fluoro-Gold-labelled cell population normally, but after nerve injury, 96% of this population became neuropeptide Y-positive. Nitric oxide synthaselike immunoreactivity was found in 2% of the Fluoro-Gold-labelled cells normally and in 10% after injury. Two per cent of the Fluoro-Gold-labelled cells in the normal cases were stained by Griffonia (bandeiraea) simplicifolia lectin I — isolectin B4. After injury, however, no such double labelling was found. Thirty-four per cent of the Fluoro-Gold-labelled cell population was carbonic anhydrase positive normally, and 42% after injury. Seventy-five per cent of the Fluoro-Gold-labelled cells showed RT97 immunoreactivity normally and 12% after injury. Choleragenoid-like immunoreactivity was found in 99% of the Fluoro-Gold-labelled dorsal root ganglion cells normally and 81% after injury. Immunohistochemical visualisation of choleragenoid transganglionically transported from the injured sciatic nerve combined with neuropeptide Y immunocytochemistry showed that primary afferent fibres and terminals in the nucleus gracilis contain neuropeptide Y following peripheral nerve transection. Taken together, the results indicate that peripherally axotomised nucleus gracilis-projecting neurones undergo marked alterations in their cytochemical characteristics, which may be significant for the structural and functional plasticity of this system after injury.

Notes: Abstract The interface reactions between an α/gb-sialon ceramic and Cu, Cu2O or a Cu-Cu2O mixture have been studied. A fully dense sialon ceramic material prepared by pressureless sintering at 1775 ° C with 6 wt% Y2O3 as sintering aid, were coldpressed together with Cu, Cu2O or Cu-Cu2O mixtures into cylindrical tablets. These samples were heat treated at 700, 850 and 1000 ° C in evacuated silica tubes. The reaction zones formed between the sialon and the powder compacts were studied in a SEM equipped with an EDS system. No reaction between copper and sialon ceramic could be detected in spite of prolonged heat treatment at 1000 ° C. Cu2O reacted with the ceramic at 850 and 1000 ° C to form a glass containing copper and all the other sialon components. The interaction between the sialon material and the Cu-Cu2O powder compacts was characterized by a redox reaction. The sialon was thus oxidized to SiO2 and N2 while Cu2O was reduced to copper. A glass phase containing silicon, aluminium, yttrium and copper was also formed in the reaction.

Notes: Abstract In order to study the relationship between static and dynamic behaviour of soda-lime glass, both quasi-static and dynamic experiments have been conducted. The difference in material behaviour when using the two test methods suggests a loading-rate dependence in the fracture of glass. To investigate this further, quasi-static tests using different loading rates were made. This investigation showed a clear difference in material behaviour when the loading rate was increased from ⩽ 10 Ns−1 to ⩾ 100 Ns−1. The results also suggest that Hertzian theory can be used to calculate contact zone sizes even when simple cracking occurs in quasi-static and dynamic cases. The Hertzian description breaks down once crushing occurs.

Notes: Abstract The dissolution of fused calcium phosphate (FP) and transformation of P were monitored in a silt loam, sandy loam, sandy clay and clay soil (pH in water = 5.3 − 5.8) incubated with 0, 108 or 324 mg P, as FP kg−1 soil dry wt, for 10, 30 or 60 d. Soluble P was fractionated by sequential extraction using a chloride anion exchanger (P-resin) and solutions of NaHCO3 (PtCO3), NaOH (PtOH) and HCl (P-HCl). Inorganic P (PiCO3, PiOH) and organic P (PoCO3, PoOH) were also determined. The FP treatments significantly (P = 5%) increased both P-resin and P-HCl levels. Over time, the differences between P-resin or P-HCl levels and the controls declined, except in the silt loam soil in which P-resin levels nearly doubled. PtCO3 and PtOH levels did not markedly respond to FP applications. As incubation proceeded PtOH levels significantly (P = 5%) increased both as PiOH and PoOH. This PtOH buildup was accompanied by small declines in PtCO3 levels, with the declines being greater in the PoCO3 than in PiCO3 fraction. P-resin, PiOH and PoOH levels were negatively correlated with those of p-HCl (P = 5%, n = 36). P-resin levels were also negatively correlated with those of PoCO3. Of the small and large FP doses, 12–45% and 51–56%, respectively, had yet to react by the end of the experiment.

Notes: Abstract The hyperfine anomaly gives an insight into the coupling of spin and orbital magnetic moments in the nucleus. More precisely, the nuclear magnetization is expressible through the nuclear wave functions with which is tested not only the magnetic moment operator, but also the tensor product [s×C 2]1. The experiment can then be expected to be of value in testing the nuclear structure theory. The greatest value of these measurements is gained when these are made systematically over a large number of isotopes. We propose to initiate a program at ISOLDE to measure the hyperfine anomaly systematically in the heavy alkali elements. The experimental setup to achieve, in particular, a precise measurement of the nuclearg-factor is presented and the results on atomic beams of39K are discussed.

Notes: Abstract A new experiment for measuring the reactivity of neutral metal clusters is presented. A low pressure reaction cell is used to measure the sticking ofO 2 andD 2 gas on small transition metal clusters ofCu, Fe, Co andNi. The experiment yields absolute values for the sticking, at a controlled number of cluster/gas collisions, facilitating comparison with theoretical calculations and other experiments. The most striking result of these preliminary measurements is the difference between oxygen sticking onCo N and onCu N , with the sticking onCu N showing a clear correlation to the electronic shell model, while the sticking onCo N only exhibits a sharp increase with size, reaching sticking probability=1.0 forN〉25.

Notes: Abstract The hyperfine structure (hfs) of181Ta has been investigated using laser radio-frequency double resonance and high resolution laser spectroscopy on collimated atomic beams. The magnetic dipole and electric quadrupole hyperfine structure coupling constants of the 5d 4 6 s 6D 3/2, 5/2, 7/2, 9/2 metastable states have been determined using radio-frequency spectroscopy. In the 5d 4 6s 6 D 1/2 metastable state and the excited 5d 3 6s 6p 4 D 3/2,6 D 5/2, 9/2 as well as the unidentified 28 182.6 cm−1 and 30 021.2 cm−1 states, hfs constants have been obtained from high resolution laser spectroscopy. A radio-frequency converter has been developed in order to reach the frequency region 2.7–10 GHz.
