Notes: Abstract The expressions for line intensities in spectra recorded with polarized γ-rays are reviewed. A density matrix formalism is used. The texture function is expanded in sphericals harmonics and the intensities are calculated for a rotated thin absorber and polarized source. A corresponding expeimental setup was developed. From measurements with videotapes the texture function was determined for demagnetized and magnetized tapes.

Notes: Abstract Single crystal LiNbO3:57Fe(III) Mössbauer absorption spectra at 3 Tesla and 120...300K can be fitted using a dynamical spin Hamiltonian according to spin-lattice relaxation. At high fields (0.9...7 Tesla) and 4.2K the spectra can be fitted using an electronuclear spin Hamiltonian. The area of the subspectra due to each electronic state is not in accordance with a Boltzmann distribution at the bath temperature. From the population we calculate spin temperatures which depend linearly on the external magnetic field.

Notes: Abstract The effects of filing FeCoV alloys with equiatomic FeCo and up to 14 at% V is studied by Mössbauer spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction. We observed that filing eliminates the paramagnetic component observed in samples in the form of plates. The filed material also presents a linear increase of the lattice parameter and a linear decrease of the average hyperfine field of the alpha phase due to extra low-field satellites with increasing vanadium contents. This indicates that filing produces a gamma to alpha phase transformation, which increases the amount of vanadium in solid solution in the FeCo alpha phase.

Notes: Abstract Mössbauer spectra of polycrystalline samples of Fe(Ox)3, Fe(BPHA)3 and K3[Fe(malonate)3] · 3H2O exhibit fast relaxation patterns in the temperature range 4.2–300 K. The magnetic hyperfine splitting has nearly completely collapsed due to rapid electronic spin-spin relaxation of the Fe ions. We use a static Hamiltonian $$\mathcal{H}_q = P[3I_z^2 - I(I + 1) + \eta (I_ + ^2 + I_ - ^2 )/2]$$ and describe the spin-spin interaction by an effective field Hamiltonian $$\mathcal{H}_{bi} \mu _n g_n H \cdot I$$ . From this the relaxation supermatrix and the Mössbauer spectra are calculated. The random texture of the samples is taken into account by averaging the radiation dipole operators over the whole sphere. Least-squares fits of the spectra for longitudinal, isotropic and transverse spin relaxation are presented. From the fits the temperature dependence of the relaxation is obtained. We conclude that in these materials the iron is present as high-spin Fe(III) and that the crystal field splitting constantD is greater than zero. The sign ofV zz is found to be positive.

Notes: Abstract Nitrosyl hemoglobin was prepared by bubbling fresh57Fe-enriched rat hemoglobin with NO. S- and X-band EPR spectra at 77 K are typical for anS=1/2 system with an anisotropicg-tensor and exhibit hyperfine interactions of14N with the electronic spin. Mössbauer spectra at 4.2 and 100 K consist of a superposition of spectra from high- and low-spin Fe(III), deoxygenated hemoglobin and a component corresponding toS=1/2,g=2, hyperfine constantsA xx /g n Β n =A yy /g n Β n =−19.6 T,A zz /g n Β n =6.8 T, quadrupole splitting δE Q=1.5 mm s−1, isomer shiftI s=0.42 mm s−1 and linewidth 0.4 mm s−1. The spin-lattice relaxation rate at 100 K is 〈2×106 s−1.

Notes: Abstract Conversion electron Mössbayer spectroscopy (CEMS) on three monolayers (ML) thick metastable fcc-Fe(001) films grown epitaxially on a Cu(001) substrate under different conditions shows that these films are characterized by a distributionP(B hf) of magnetic hyperfine fieldsB hf. The vast majority of57Fe nuclei experience relatively large hyperfine fields at low temperature. The temperature dependence of the most probable fieldB peak was found to follow aT 3/2 spin-wave law below 300 K. It is shown from the relative line intensities that preferential Fe spin orientation perpendicular to the film plane exists in films grown at ∼120 K, while preferential in-plane spin orientation is found for a growth temperature of ∼300 K. Coating a low-temperature grown Fe film by ∼2 ML of Cu(001) drastically reduces the hyperfine field, in contrast to the case of room-temperature grown Cu-coated films.

Notes: Abstract Two distinct phases of the Fe−Co−Nb and three of the Fe−Co−V systems have been studied by means of X-ray diffraction and Mössbauer spectroscopy. The dependence of the lattice parameter of the alpha phase on the nominal solute content in equiatomic FeCo together with the alterations of the Mössbauer spectra have shown a very limited solubility of niobium in alpha FeCo. There are indications that the solubility of vanadium in alpha FeCo increases with increasing nominal content of solute in the alloy. A mechanism involving the withdrawal of cobalt from the alpha matrix to form a phase rich in Co and V (gamma) is proposed to explain such a varying solubility. The vanadium content of the sigma phase in equiatomic FeCo alloys with 22 wt% V is proposed to be less than 50 at%.

Notes: Abstract From Mössbauer spectra of57Fe with elliptically polarized radiation we fit the coefficients of the spin (or electric field gradient) texture function expanded in real spherical harmonics up to 1=2. We determine, and show in perspective graphs, the spin texture of the surface of a transformer metal sheet (Fe−Si), of magnetic videotapes (demagnetized and magnetized) and the electric field gradient texture of a powder of an organometallic compound. We calculate some averages that have an important physical significance.

Notes: Abstract Mössbauer spectra of LiNbO3:Fe(III)-single crystals at various external fields and temperatures are least-squares fitted using a static spin-Hamiltonian and appropriate relaxation matrices. An electronic secular approximation is used to reduce the number of the relaxation matrix elements. The results forH ext=0 cannot be explained by a dynamical spin-Hamiltonian. The relaxation frequency for the spectra withH ext=1.5 and 3 T is independent of energy and proportional toT 2, thus excluding a direct process.

Notes: Abstract The theory of calculating Mössbauer spectra by anab initio method is shortly reviewed. The relaxation supermatrix is calculated in an electronic basis and its dimension is reduced. Spectra are fitted using a dynamical spin-Hamiltonian. A procedure for fitting the spectra in the whole temperature range is suggested.
