Notes: Abstract First results on π− d → are reported. The measurements were made using 8 specially designed neutron counters, which were carefully calibratedin situ. The differential cross sections atT π=142, 180, 217, and 254 MeV were obtained at four angles between 0° and 90°, they are compared to π+ d →pp data measured at the same energies and angles with the same setup. At every beam energy, the shape of the angular distributions of π− d →nn and π+ d →pp is the same to ±2%. The absolute cross sections differ by 1 to 10%. The error in this comparison is ±4% implying a small violation of charge symmetry.

Notes: Summary Cellulose is conveniently functionalized to the corresponding S-benzoyl cellulose xanthate. Photolysis of S-benzoyl cellulose xanthate in presence of methyl methacrylate (MMA) initiated graft copolymerization which was confirmed by different analytical techniques.

Notes: Abstract Thermal conductivity of NdCoO3 and GdCoO3 has been studied from 300 to 1200 K. The conductivity is mainly excitonic, arising from the interactions of the t2g−eg states of cobalt ions in the oxides and shows characteristic maxima at 1030 and 975 K, respectively, corresponding with their semiconductor-metal transition temperatures. Contributions to thermal conductivity by phononic, electronic, ambipolar, and excitonic modes of conduction are calculated from measured thermal and electrical conductivity data in this temperature range. The energy of exciton formation in both the compounds is found to be 0.11 eV, same as in the case of LaCoO3.

Notes: Abstract An apparatus developed for the measurement of thermal conductivity of solids at temperatures from 350 to 1250 K in air, vacuum, or any other controlled atmosphere is described. It is based on the steady-state axial heat flow comparative method and can be used for measurements of conductivities in the range 1 to 100 W·m−1·K−1. New heat source layout gives uniform heat flux across the specimen column, improving the accuracy of the measurements. The specimen stack is fixed in a rigid frame. It incorporates convection current breakers, eliminating thermal insulation of the stack and thereby considerably increasing the ease of specimen mounting. The accuracy of measurements was assessed by measuring the thermal conductivity of approved reference materials and is found to be within ±3%. The results of measurements on nickel of known purity are also presented. Error analysis of the system shows that the determinate error leaving the uncertainty in the thermal conductivity of the reference materials, is less than ±2%.

Notes: Abstract The reaction of benzyl alcohol and dibenzyl ether on several zeolites was studied in the temperature range 300–500 °C. The major products were benzaldehyde and toluene due to disproportionation, anthracene due to intermolecular alkylation followed by cyclodehydration, benzyltoluenes due to alkylation followed by hydrogenolysis, and stilbene. The alkylation course was strongly influenced by shape selectivity with the large pore zeolites mainly yielding anthracene and the medium pore zeolites benzyltoluene. The formation of stilbene was a new observation which has a bearing on the mechanism of the methanol-to-hydrocarbon reactions.

Notes: Abstract Cardanol-formaldehyde (CF) resins (both novolac and resol) and CF-poly(methylmethacrylate) (PMMA) semi-interpenetrating polymer networks were synthesized and their mechanical properties and thermal transitions were evaluated. The lower tensile strength of CF resins compared to phenol-formaldehyde (PF) resins may be understood on the basis of the structure of the C15 side chain imparting steric hindrance and reduction in intermolecular interactions. Interpenetration of CF with PMMA increased the mechanical properties only marginally. Scanning electron micrographs of the semi-IPNs showed two distinct phases. Thermomechanical analysis gave two glass transition temperatures,T g, for the IPNs, the lowerT g corresponding to the PMMA phase and the higherT g to the CF phase. However, the unusual increase inT g of the CF from 128°C to 144°C suggests restrictions in the segmental motion of the CF phase brought about by mixing with another rigid polymer such as PMMA.

Notes: Abstract Catalytic behavior of a magnesium-copper intermetallic alloy, Mg2Cu, in the hydrogenation of acetone has been studied in the temperature range of 393–423 K. A continuous flow type reaction was employed. Mg2Cu showed good catalytic activity with 2-propanol as the only product. A plausible mechanism for the mode of adsorption of acetone is proposed.

Notes: Abstract Decompositon of 2-propanol has been carried out on the hydrogen storage material Mg2Cu and its modified form (OH−Mg2Cu) to study their catalytic behavior. The reaction was carried out in a continuous flow type reactor in the temperature range of 403–513 K at various flow rates. Mg2Cu showed good catalytic activity with large amounts of condensation products. Its modified form gave acetone as the only products. The reason for these differences is explained in terms of differences in the structure of the catalyst as determined by XRD and XPS, as well as by surface area measurements. The reason for the formation of condensation products is discussed.
