Notes: Nanocomposites of Al-In, Al-Pb, and Zn-Pb have been prepared and characterized using rapid quenching techniques and the nature of superconducting transitions in them has been studied by resistivity measurements. The precipitated second phases (In and Pb) have particle sizes (d) of a few tens of nanometers such that ξ0≥d≥dmin, where ξ0 is the superconducting zero temperature coherence length and dmin is the minimum particle size that supports superconductivity. The onset of superconductivity generally starts in samples with d∼ξ0 and progressively other grains with d≤ξ0 become superconducting. We suggest that the proximity effect of the matrix plays a significant role. In an Al-In system, even with 40 wt.% In, the zero resistivity state is obtained at T∼1.33 times the Tc of Al. But in Al-Pb and Zn-Pb, the zero resistivity state is obtained at T∼4 and 5 times the Tc of Al and Zn with only 10–15 wt % Pb, respectively.

Notes: We report the effect of surface treatments on the dynamic conductance curves (G=dI/dV-V) of Au-Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+δ (single crystal) point contact junctions of variable junction conductances (100 mS(approximately-greater-than)G(approximately-greater-than)100 μS). We find that if the crystal surface is cleaved freshly just prior to making contacts, all irreproducible sharp multiple features often observed in tunneling data of Bi(2212) oxide superconductors disappear. If the cleaved crystal surfaces are left under ambient conditions for a few days and the tunneling experiments are repeated, these multiple features reappear. We also find that if the current in the junction is made to pass predominantly through the bulk (and not along the surface), gap features are sharper. The observed conductance curves are fitted to a modified model [G. E. Blonder et al., Phys. Rev. B 25, 4515 (1982)] and estimated gap values are Δ(approximately-equal-to)28 to 30 meV corresponding to the ratio 2Δ/kBTc (approximately-equal-to) 7.5 with lifetime broadening Γ/Δ(approximately-equal-to)0.2. We conclude that the sharp multiple features observed in Bi(2212) tunneling curves has no intrinsic origin in the bulk and they arise from the surface only.

Notes: Young's modulus (E) and the sound velocity (v) of the alloy series Fe80−xNixCr20 were measured using a vibrating reed technique for 14≤x≤30 in the temperature range 1.5–300 K. The measurement, done over a large range of x and T, made it possible to study and compare the elastic manifestation of various magnetic transitions in a single alloys series, from long-range antiferromagnet (AFM) to long-range ferromagnet (FM) through intermediate phases of spin glass (SG) and reentrant spin glass (RSG). The magnetic contribution to E and v is found to be qualitatively similar in FM and RSG alloys (both positive) and that it tends to zero as x→xc, where xc is the critical nickel concentration for the onset of ferromagnetism. In the spin glass (x〈xc), the magnetic contribution is negative and shows a minimum near the spin-glass transition. E has also been measured in an applied field H(=0.02 T) as a function of temperature (T〈Tc) to study the contribution of magnetic domains to E in alloys with ferromagnetic and reentrant spin-glass transitions. It is found that in RSG alloys, the domain-related contribution to E vanishes below the reentrant transition.

Notes: Abstract Injection of 2.5 mg of λ-carrageenan into the rat pleural cavity resulted in a time-dependent increase in pleural exudate substance P (SP) levels up to 24 hr. Synergistic increases in the exudate formation were observed when a sub-optimal quantity of carrageenan was injected with SP. Pre-treatment of rats with capsaicin at 50 and 100 mg/kg s.c. daily for one week prior to the induction of pleurisy blocked the increase in exudate volume and SP levels when compared to that normally detected after carrageenan injection. These results suggest that inhibition of SP production may improve inflammatory conditions.

Notes: Abstract The intrapleural injection of carrageenan in the rat induces exudate formation, cellular influx and leukotriene generation in the pleural cavity. We have demonstrated that the inflammatory response (exudate volume, and LTB4 levels) is increased,in situ by the intrapleural administration of calcium ionophore A 23187 (100 nmol/rat) at 4, 16, 24, 48, and 72 h after the injection of carrageenan and that the A 23187-induced increase is dose-dependent. The oral administration of A-64077 and MK-886, two 5-lipoxygenase inhibitors (5-LOIs), at 10 mg/kg causes marked decreases in LTB4 release at the above-mentioned time intervals. However, A 23187-induced augmented exudate formation is not affected by the treatment with 5-LOIs. The results suggest that the use of 5-LOIs to inhibit LTB4 biosynthesis may be beneficial in various LTB4-dependent pathological conditions.

Notes: Abstract The arachidonic acid (AA)-induced ear edema model in the mouse has been demonstrated as an effectivein vivo experimental tool to screen compounds showing anti-inflammatory activity. Since neutrophil influx is a component of the inflammatory reaction, we have modified this assay by quantitating myeloperoxidase (MPO) levels which reflect neutrophil accumulation in the edematous biopsies of the mouse ear. Our work has shown that orally administered 5-lipoxygenase inhibitors, dual inhibitors (CO/LO), and steroids dose-dependently inhibit both edema formation and MPO activity, whereas oral activity is not seen with NSAID's. There is a good correlation between the inhibition of edema formation and of MPO activity by these compounds. Thus, measurement of MPO, in addition to the AA-induced edema in the mouse ear, can provide another parameter to profile potential anti-inflammatory compounds.

Notes: Abstract We have measured the internal friction and speed of sound in several polycrystalline alloys, using compound torsional oscillators at frequencies between 60 kHz and 100 kHz and temperatures between 50 mK and 100 K. By combining these data with existing elastic and thermal data on similar alloys, we find that those alloys which can undergo diffusionsless phase transitions, such as Ti:Nb, Ti:V, or Zr:Nb in certain ranges of composition have glasslike excitations, since they have elastic properties which agree in magnitude and temperature dependence with those of amorphous solids. By contrast. crystalline continuous solution alloys, such as Nb:Ta, or alloys with diffusive phase transitions, such as high-pressure quenched Al94Si6, have the same elastic properties as are known for crystals.

Notes: Abstract It is argued that one-way passage is inconsistent with Newtonian physics and thus the dark bodies as thought of by Michell and Laplace cannot be considered as exact analogues of relativistic black holes.

Notes: Abstract A method for the selective extraction of cerium (IV) on tri-n-butyl phosphate and thenoyltrifluoroacetone loaded foams is described. Parameters affecting the extraction of the metal ion, such as pH, reagent concentration and equilibration time have been investigated. Effects of ten diverse cations have also been studied. The method can be applied to preconcentrate and determine cerium in glasses.
