Notes: Abstract To determine how and when the satellite cells are stimulated to replicate in muscle regeneration, the rat soleus muscle was examined chronologically after bupivacaine-induced myonecrosis. Bromodeoxyuridine and desmin-positive mononuclear cells, indicating the start of satellite cell replication, were seen 25 h after bupivacaine treatment when macrophages had already invaded the sarcoplasm of necrotic fiber. These findings suggest that muscle regeneration starts as early as the time at which macrophages begin to scavenge necrotic material. Proliferating myoblasts increased in number, reaching a maximum at 49 h after myonecrosis, and decreased in number 3 days after the myoblasts fused with each other to form myotubes. The satellite cell proliferation after bupivacaine-induced myonecrosis began at almost the same time as in crush injury, and earlier than after muscle transplantation using whole intact or minced muscle fragments. The earlier begining and more rapid regenerating process probably resulted from the preservation of intact satellite cells, blood vessels and peripheral nerves in the bupivacaine-induced myonecrosis.

Notes: Summary The relationship between the content of probucol in plasma and lipid lowering was studied after administration of probucol. The study group consisted of 44 patients with Type II hyperlipidaemia (mean age 56 y). Total cholesterol level was decreased from 293 to 232 mg · dl−1 by the administration of probucol. The plasma probucol concentration was 2.03 mg · dl−1 after 4 weeks of administration of 500 mg b. d. Although there was no relationship between the change in total cholesterol and the plasma probucol, a linerar relation was observed between the decrease in LDL-cholesterol concentration and the probucol concentration in LDL. Neither the VLDL nor the HDL-probucol content were related to the magnitude of the decrease in lipoprotein cholesterol. The present study has demonstrated that an increase in the probucol content in LDL was associated with a decrease in plasma LDL-cholesterol.

Notes: Four types of L-tryptophan lots produced by genetically modified B. myloliquefaciens strains II-V, which consisted of case-associated (11) with manifestations of EMS, control (16), and other lots (11), were compared by multivariate computer recognition programs (chemometrics) including HCA, PCA, KNN and SIMCA, as well as PLS. In HCA data analysis lots from strains III and V formed discrete clusters, and in PCA and SIMCA, both lots formed separated groups. Lots from strains II and IV were included in a group of lots from strain III. This indicated strains II and IV too were closely related to strain III. When strain vs case-associated control or other lots were compared by four methods, SIMCA provided adequate strain separation and strains were well grouped in case-associated or control lots.

Notes: Previously, we have proposed a strategic dual image (SDI) method to obtain the finite element solution of open boundary magnetic field problems. Also, we have derived a complex permeability from a Chua-type magnetization model. Combination of this complex permeability with the SDI method is now applied to exploit a new high frequency characteristic measurement device for thin magnetic films. Numerical simulation suggests that our new measurement method yields far superior results compared with those of the conventional one.

Notes: Among the various nondestructive testing methods, the electric potential method requires relatively simple device and measurement. However, because of the high electrical contact resistance, sometimes it is difficult to measure the correct local electric potentials by direct contact. In order to overcome this difficulty, method is proposed which involves substituting the local magnetic field for electric potential measurements. The comparison with the conventional electric potential method demonstrates the usefulness this method, especially for materials with low resistivity.

Notes: The eflect of lumbar or thoracic extradurul anaesthesia on the ventilatory response to progressive isocapnic hypoxaemia was studied in two groups of 10 unpremeditated patients. The ventilatory measurements were taken twice, before and 20 min after the administration of 10 ml of lignocaine 2%. Lumbar extradural anaesthesia did not change the slope of the hypoxic response curve, but it significantly increased minute ventilation by 27% at an arterial oxygen saturation of 90%. Thoracic extradural anaesthesia was not associated with any changes in either index. We conclude that neither lumbar nor thoracic extradural anaesthesia impairs the ventilatory response to progressive isocapnic hypoxaemia.

Notes: The anaesthetic management of a patient with Eaton-Lambert myasthenic syndrome undergoing thoracotomy is described. Epidural anaesthesia, in combination with a light level of general anaesthesia, provided good operating conditions and postoperative analgesia. Pulmonary function and ventilatory responses to carbon dioxide and hypoxia were measured before operation. These tests were repeated after the epidural administration of 8 ml 2% lignocaine before surgery and after 2 mg morphine sulphate in 10 ml saline postoperatively. Minor reductions in some of the ventilatory parameters were observed. The epidural technique appears to be a useful and safe method by which to manage patients with Eaton–Lambert syndrome undergoing thoracotomy.

Notes: Polyphase eddy current testing is proposed. The operating principle of this system is as follows. The polyphase eddy current testing system may be regarded as one of the polyphase transformers. Primary balanced polyphase coils are star connected and secondary polyphase circuits are composed of the target. When balanced polyphase currents are fed into the primary coils, zero phase voltage is detected if the target has defects. No zero phase voltage is detected if the target has no defects. It is found that this method has a higher sensitivity compared with that of conventional eddy current testing.
